The green movement is asking simply that you flick a switch and turn out the lights for one short hour on March 29 as others around the world do the same thing.

In Toronto, the Fairmont Royal York Hotel, Canada Life building, City Hall and even the iconic CN Tower are just a few of the structures that will be going dark between 8 and 9 p.m., and a big downtown party will include a performance by Nelly Furtado.

Has anyone figured out how much the party will cost in energy?:drinktoth

Not much sense in taking some token action if the publicity is going to use more resources than you save .

It's called Earth Hour and it's not really "new".

I'm going to turn on all my lights on that day. I'm also going to use my toaster, my hair dryer (actually my wife's hair dryer), my electric stove, an iron and all my other electric appliances.

I turn off my lights all the time. I turned of all my lights this morning, put me in for the Noble Prize! Only a lib would think they are saving the earth by turning off a light.

For one I'm turning off my lights I don't know how anyone can say different. What if you happen to be the only one's not turning off your light?

I think it's so appropriate that these green zealots have encouraged people to turn their lights out. They are "in the dark" both literally and metaphorically.

green movement is a bunch of pussies. i dare everyone to stop everything for 4 days at the same time.

Travh20

OK, you first. Start with water.

primitive man
04-22-2008, 02:11 PM
been done before. don't move around much and 4 days no water isn't really a big deal. been without food for that long too. also electric, cars, tv, radio. just a blanket. learn a lot sitting in one place. deer will come up and sniff you after 2 days.
in the olden days turning off your lights, finding short cuts in prepping anything without using petroleum, or electric and recycling (metals, composting, etc.) was considered being frugal. saves money. its cheaper to be cleaner.
probably tomorrow i will be eating a snapping turtle i killed today. have to wait for it to stop twitching to butcher it. and it has no prewrapping, plastic, or use of petroleum to ship it.
the fear of "stopping" just for 4 days is out of paranoia. people actually think THEIR world will come to an end. 4 days stopping X 51% of population = well, more than likely things will change drastically.
or you can continue to bludgeon yourself into reality. 365 days of continuous waste X 90% of the population divided by reusable resources (air, trees, water, food)= one day a hell of a drastic change.
same result. different path.
do it peacefully and mindfully, or just jump off a cliff.
and since most people decidedto jump, don't be surprised when you have overpopulated prisons, disease, famine, divide between haves and have nots growing larger, and war. your choice.

I've gone days without water, electricity, and food too (usually not all three at the same time). Going without water is the worst. Without electricity is no big deal at all, but without water you can't flush the toilet, wash your hands, shower, wash dishes, etc. Going without food is ok at first but after the first 48 hours it gets real hard.

well, if you want to start counting, when I was in East Africa we had no electricity, no running water, no stores, no telephones, no anything for 3+ months. When we finally made it to Mogadishu and saw they had a little PX and electricity and hot showers it was like a little slice of heaven. Probably made primitive man's place look like the White House.

i just had to add this. i have to think you were military. the above is EXACTLY why america will NEVER win a war on guerilla (terrorist) type warfare. america can't do without. yeah, it was 3 months. but the majority of these "guerillas" and "terrorists" have done without their entire lives.
