MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates of Richmond, B.C., the country's premier space firm, is being sold to the U.S. company, Alliant Techsystems of Minnesota.

This was a Canadian government funded company.

First off....you quoted out of context

Secondly it has to be approved first --and we know how drawn out that can be .
There could be another government in power by then and they may simply kill the deal (or not)

Hey I don't want the company to go and I was hoping the American's would see that if they own it they'll have to fund it.

Dexter a great robot as is the arm but its a practically free to the US. At the moment I think.

I think it's great that Canada is taking part in the exploration of space. Their contributions are welcomed by all.

I always's wondered why Canadian's hate the British so much but to here there arrogance first hand I can rest on it.

The Canada-arm is a very touchy subject with Canadian's given that US ignorance of its mechanics had the US government vote to put blast off rockets on it to insult Canada's contribution at the time of its maiden voyage.

And understanding Drews opinions about Canada in previous threads I just thought best to ignore him.

1) I'm not quite sure what you're saying.
2) As much as Congress likes to involve themselves in stuff they shouldn't, I can't see them getting involved in space robot arms.

They must know how it works in order fix any glitches that occur (and they do occasionally)

As for the blast off rockets..that's just planning for a worse case scenario --If for some reason it can't be retracted they need a way to jettison it away from the shuttle or landing the thing would be a nightmare

nothing a space walk with a wrench couldn't fix...and much safer than landing with explosives in the cargo bay if nothing went wrong.

Well I don't remember hereing that way before Spooky.

Thanks

I just found this
• There was a contingency plan ready if the arm dramatically malfunctioned. Small explosive charges would have blown it off the shuttle and into space. The extreme measure would have been taken if the arm had stopped the cargo bay doors from closing, which would have prevented the shuttle from safely re-entering the earth's atmosphere.

Its not the exact way i remembered it

I remember some in the US wanted to see the arm funtion under gravity and since its not designed for that the USA had voted to put the explosives on it. They didn't need explosives for what a cable could do.

It was for US media hype
