A one-handed North Carolina man who was traveling with a 13-year-old girl he met on the Internet was arrested Wednesday in Arizona after a tipster alerted authorities to their whereabouts.
Michael Allan Hulst, 25, of Jacksonville, N.C., was arrested by Cochise County sheriff's deputies outside Tombstone, Ariz., said Laura Bosley, a spokeswoman for the FBI field office in Los Angeles.
The girl, who lives in the Panorama City section of Los Angeles, was found with Hulst and was placed with child protective services, Bosley said.
Hulst was charged in Los Angeles with the federal crime of travel to engage in a sexual act with a juvenile, Bosley said. Preliminary reports indicated that the girl had not been harmed or sexually molested, Bosley said.
The girl was last seen by her godmother-guardian about 1 a.m. Monday.
A witness who had seen television news reports about the pair recognized them in a restaurant Wednesday afternoon and called the FBI, which asked local deputies to apprehend the two, Bosley said.
