View Full Version : Americans' Fascinating Squeamishness Toward "Exotic" Food

You might disagree with me, but I think the average Americans are famously squeamish when it comes to a lot of "exotic" foods which most other cultures don't find very exotic and regularly prepare/eat (or when they do find something exotic, they cherish the exotic, not dread it). Of course there are gourmets, foodies, and an assortment of Americans who are not like that, but the average Americans do exhibit the above tendency. It is fascinating to me, and I would love to hear about any guess or explaination on the reason for this phenomenon.
I don't know...I'm an american...but I hate food in general...
It's all I can do to suck down some soup and a sandwich...no idea about exotic stuff...erotic..then you have my attention...hehe

yeah, i'm really squeamish about exotic american food too. mcdonald's just looks so wierd and icky. give me some sushi and a falafel anyday.

Exotic - as in "not the usual fare"? I've eaten alligator, caribou, rattlesnake & shark, to name but a few of the more atypical meats. I've also dined on various insects - grasshoppers, ants & beetles, plus a number of things I've just had the good sense not to ask what was being served.
