It depends.... There are some remakes that I do like... a small small few even better. I am not saying the newer artist does it better, they just have thier own interesting spin on it.... Like GnR remaking live and let die,or knocking on heavens door....
What is worse to me is a song that is out for a short time being redone in the country formatt....

My grocery store plays 80s songs. It's about time us GenXers boot the baby boomers to the curb.
P.S. Dude, I think you're a little obsessed with the 80s. :)

He's right..
no-name bands try to make a name for themselves by remaking great songs, and what is dumb is that it works.
However, the thing is.. sometimes music NEEDS to be updated. Today's technology and recording abilities are so much cleaner, crisper, and have such a better tone than back in the 80's. Some songs need an update. However, it seems like sometimes the song gets bastardized.
I, myself, plan on making a "remake album" of U2. The difference is, I pretty much have told my brother, who is also a U2 fan but also likes my music, that I'm pretty much going to try to mess up these songs as much as possible with my own style that I think sounds best.... I absolutely acknowledge that the originals can NEVER be beat. However, sometimes it is interesting to hear different renditions of a song. I absolutely COMPLETEY changed the song "lemon" by U2. I changed the medium, the feel, the tempo... and my brother, who is a purist to the core, actually liked it quite a bit. However, I guarantee other ones that I did are horrid. But hey, I'll put my ideas down and make the song, because i'm an artist, and the thing that drives someone like me isn't money or fame, but just the fact that I MUST get my ideas out of my mind and heart, because they are bursting to be expressed.

And vice versa. I dont like pop trying to making a slow country song into a pop dance remix. Chances are they both suck anyway.

Two John Michael Montgomery songs come to mind here......"I Swear" and "I Can Love You Like That" were both done first by him then turned into crappy R&B songs. Way to ruin a couple good songs

Disturbed is one of the worst bands.. not because of their "style", they definitely have one, but their inability to make any changes TOO that "style". every new song sounds the same. They can't redefine themselves, like so many great bands have done.

Well the one that pisses me off the most was Rascal Flatts "what hurts the most". Some pop chick redid it and now it's some upbeat dance song. YUCK!!!!! Even D ..who doesn't like country...thought the country version fit.

It's rare that a remake actually makes an impact, or is deemed or seen as better than the original.. however, a few come to mind.
"You Really Got Me", redone by David Lee Roth is better than the original.
"Turn the Page", redone by Metalica... questionable.
"Cars" by Fear Factory, but they invited Gary Newman back to be a part of it. Definitely a better version.
Other remakes that SUCKED:
"Sad But True" by Kid Rock
"Smooth Criminal" by Alien Ant Farm (funny, their ONLY claim to fame)

I've never heard the pop version and really don't want to. That song holds alot of meaning to me. :(
Decka,I like both versions of "Turn the Page". I think Metallica did a decent job on it and didn't butcher it. Even Bob Seger thinks highly of it.
As for Kid Rock redoing "Sad But True".....are you freaking serious? :lolhit:

And I think Metalica does a good job of "Turn the Page" I prefer the Bob Segar version. I have not heard Fear Factory's version of "Cars" though.

STP's remake of dancing days was cool.
THE WORST REMAKE OF ALL TIMES......Madonna's remake of American pie.
turn the page was a great attempt to the original..
what i like about remakes is the different spin on the music..
like how GnR added the guitar riffs to knockin on heaven door, and live and let die..

As far as 80s remakes go, there are a few that are very good, a select few that are excellent, and some that are just..........eh. No description at all. I live and immerse myself in music and have been doing so for the last 4 years. I know a good bit about what really great music is. I like almost all kinds, except for rap, and I don;t even count rap as music. I absolutely hate rap and all it's "glory". I don't understand why it so big, and by a real music lover's definition, it's not even wort counting as bad music, because it's not real music at all.
Anyway, there are great 80s remakes. Disturbed's "Land of Confusion" is one example of a really good remake. An example of an EXCELLENT remake would be Atreyu's remake of "You Give Love A Bad Name".
As far as country to pop goes (referring to Cascada's remake of Rascal Flatt's "What Hurts the Most") it's not completely awful. For someone who saw the Rascal Flatt's version music video over and over, Cascada's is actually better. The music video tells tat song's story from a girl's point of veiw, so to have a girl singing it is very refreshing and makes a lot more sense than the original, although Cascada's video DID SUCK. And it's also bad that she hyped it up, because it is a sad song, so she shouldn;t have given it a happy tone, but it's better that it finally has a girl's voice to relay the story.
Also, I read someone mentioned The Used & My Chamical Romance's remake of "Under Pressure". This remake wasn't completely awful. but it was very well near it. It is tolerable, but whilst listening to it, you can forget what song it is because of the sound of these two bands against the sound of the original. As I said it's tolerable as a song in itself, but up until the point when they're saying :under pressure", you forget what it's a remake of.

Marilyn Manson remade the Eurythmics "Sweet Dreams" and also Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" I agree the 80's version is better. I liked when Marilyn Manson did Sweet Dreams in concert though. He knows how to work the crowd no matter how revolting he has to be.

Man, I was just looking at a website that was talking about 80s songs remade. I happen to like "Sailing" by Christopher Cross and noticed that NSync of all groups covered the song. I didn't know this. So I decided to mosey over to YouTube to see what it sounded like and get a visual at the same time. I found a video in which apparently NSync performs with Cross live. I was appalled to see that NSync was apparently roped to the rafters, and whenever the chorus came along, NSync would "sail" over the audience...

Remember stuff was MUCH BETTER in the 80s and earlier (Quality, etc) so a song could be remade and still be good!!
Today there IS NO QUALITY and everything is garbage and any song redone sounds like garbage!! (Especially if its that hip hop crap)

Ouch! A lot of bashing has been directed towards the Queen! ;)
But as I've said time and time again, Madonna isn't the greatest artist ever and I've never claimed she was -- but she does deserve respect.
She was recently admitted to the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame, had the highest grossing tour of all-time for a female artist in 2006 and has continued to push forward in an industry that values youth above all else.
She defined the '80s with her fashion, is the most successful female artist ever and has pushed both social and political boundaries (Sex Book, feminist ideals, music videos with burning crosses etc). A true icon and living legend.
Songs such as, "Holiday" -- "Like a Virgin" -- "Material Girl" -- "Into the Groove" -- "Like a Prayer" -- "Vogue" and "Music" will live on forever. She'll always be remembered, and continues to produce and create #1 hits.
PS: Hopefully she'll marry A-Rod, he's cute. ;)
