A vast array of pharmaceuticals — including antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers and sex hormones — have been found in the drinking water supplies of at least 41 million Americans, an Associated Press investigation shows.

To be sure, the concentrations of these pharmaceuticals are tiny, measured in quantities of parts per billion or trillion, far below the levels of a medical dose. Also, utilities insist their water is safe.

But the presence of so many prescription drugs — and over-the-counter medicines like acetaminophen and ibuprofen — in so much of our drinking water is heightening worries among scientists of long-term consequences to human health.

in the "old" days, people were insane because they self medicated with cocaine, laudenum, opiates, etc. with over the counter meds. mercury, lead, arsenic was common in the water and meds.

I'm surprised that this is just now news. It's been being studied for years. I also don't understand why anybody is surprised by the fact that pharmaceuticals are in the water. People have been flushing pills down the toilet for years.

They said in TIME magazine that bottled water is just as likely to have the same amounts of medicine in it as tap water. There aren't really any "pure" supplies of water anymore, and most bottled water is just filtered anyways. Filtering or boiling doesn't get rid of the medications in the water either... So we're all being constantly medicated! I actually don't find this disturbing at all, possibly because I've either known this or assumed it pretty much my whole life.

Bottled water is mostly all tap water that has been filtered. Don't believe me? If I remember correctly, Aquafina and Dasani say that right on their bottles.
