As I'm sure you all know by now, Brett has decided to hang up his cleats for good and retire after 17 up and down seasons in the NFL.

I heard some pundists say that he should be consdiered one of the best QBs of all time--if not the best.
Thoughts on that comment?

My thought--no, absolutely not. Just because he made a few spectacular plays, he had the mindset he could do that all the time--with the results being well-known.

Also, do you think he'll go into coaching or maybe be a commentator?

I'd say Brett was a top 10 QB...he had too many INTs for me to put him in front of guys like Marino.

Although, Brett still has plenty of time to change his mind.

One of the best? Definitely. The best. I don't really think so.

Definitely not coaching. I don't see him wanting to put in 100 hour weeks like most coaches do. Maybe commentating, but that doesn't strike me as his style.

I'd put him in the top 10 for sure.

My daughters were so upset, one sent me a picture text of Brett while I was sitting in the dentist's chair. I wonder if they'll still be Packers fans now that Brett is gone. They can both barely remember any other QB. I don't think they want to give Aaron Rogers a chance.

I think he'll retire to Mississippi and focus on his charities and family...
I don't think he could sit and commentate without verbally bitch slapping someone. Brett is very Brett about the game. And I'm not even a Packers fan.

They'll come around. Aaron Rodgers is a cutie. :)

LOL, it's kinda sad those 2 addlepated girls judge a QB's worth on what he looks like and how hot he is.

If that's their criteria, then Bernie Kosar was a dud.

Why not retire? He's probably got enough money to live in good style from now on. Turn the page.

Oh thank god, now all we need is for hillary to to hang up here cleats and all will be right with the world.

By the way, someone better put John Madden on suicide watch. He may be about ready to jump off the top floor of the Madden Cruiser right now.

This kinda backs up my dad and I's opinion that Brett Favre stayed around the last 5 years just to break the records for individual accomplishment.

The last 4 years, they had NO shot of being in contention...

This year, they get real good on defense, and their wide receivers, tight end, and running back blossom. Their offensive line was solid.

If Brett wanted a to "play for a superbowl" and "be all giddy and happy" about winning... he'd come back in a snap this year. He came back the last 4 years to a shitty team that had no shot to win it. So now they DO have a shot, but Favre already has his records, so he's out.

I'm not saying that's the facts, i'm just saying it could be...

I wouldn't be surprised to see Favre come back if Aaron Rodgers goes down with a bad injury late in the season. Why not? Wouldn't Favre be way better than whoever is backing up Rodgers? He kept on saying he could still play...wouldn't you think his competitive drive would push him to come back and help the Packers? Just a thought.

That is true. If he can still play, as he said over and over again, why would he not come back to a team that just went to the conference title game? He got his records and is out.

Not necessarily...I think he's already moved on with his other man-love-crush.

I saw that, it was weird to see him so emotional. This is the same guy who was the steely-eyed gunslinger the day after his father died, when his wife was ill, when his brother in law died....you get the gist. Man, you can't say the guy isn't emotionally invested in the game! But I guess that's just the warrior in him.

I'm just glad Donald Driver wasn't there with him......I think they would have dissolved in a huge man-sob puddle.

Hope springs eternal, I guess. Every article I've read still say the Packers have the best QB in the NFC Norris.

Of course it's all wishful thinking and hoping that the Vikes make it that far. I see another traditional purple/gold vs. green/gold bloodbath in the Norris this year. Will Aaron Rodgers be able to fill the big shoes left before him? Will Tarvaris Jackson continue his progressive improvement?

Besides, the Bears have majorly regressed and the Lions...are still the Lions.

...damnit, I miss football.

His previous lack of emotions is what made me wonder about his priorities but I guess when you won't be getting a billion dollar paycheck anymore that's gotta really hurt

Favre was rated #2 on "the most overrated player in NFL history" on ESPN for a reason. He had great years, but there was always an excuse for his dismal play. If he went out and threw 3 picks... it was "you can't blame him, it's his nature... he's a GUN SLINGER... it's Brett being Brett"... any other QB would be thrown to the wolves. Favre's ascension to some "golden boy" status is kinda BS in my opinion. He was a cocky prick in Atlanta, came over to Green Bay, won 3 MVP's and a super bowl (the good years)... and then.. it was excuse after excuse. "Brett didn't have a defense, Brett didn't have anyone around him, Brett played hurt."

BUT.. when the packers WON.. it was different. "Brett Favre gutted out a victory, Brett carried the packers to a win, Brett is so pure and like a kid out there, Brett plays the game like it should be played blah blah blah."

Brett Favre then held the Packers hostage by not giving up his starting spot to a rebuilding team to a young, top QB draft pick. The front office is also to blame, because they didn't have the balls to bench the guy who would throw 20+ picks per year, and lead his team to losing records. Any other QB would be canned, but not Brett Favre. If Favre had any class, he would have stepped down and let Rodgers or someone else play when they were out of the playoff hunt and rebuilding. He was about the records if you ask me.

Look at this year. They made it to the NFC Championship this year.. and I heard his interview with ESPN.. he said it would be "too hard" to try to win a super bowl.. and he was basically afraid to fail, because anything less than a super bowl would be a disappointment.

WTF? Hey Brett, all these years you played "because you love the game".. but now that you have the records, all the sudden you are "scared"? You should be ALL OVER playing this year. You finally have a defense and a running game, along with one of the top 5 recieving cores in the league. But yet you retire.

It was both the Packers AND Favre's fault, but one was just chasing records for personal status, and the other didn't have any balls. That's just my opinion, and the bottom line.

Now Decka, be nice.

Brett's a good guy and has done lots of work for retarded kids off the field. This is something that was rarely reported. He did not want any credit, unlike lots of other famous, high -priced athletes. His mom was a special-ed teacher. Brett did a lot of good for the community.

Decka
03-11-2008, 03:36 PM
That I can admire. It's usually the guys who you DON'T hear about doing any work in the community that do the most. He certainly has matured over the years obviously, but I don't think he has fully matured as far as sports goes. I think records mean a lot to him, while other packer fans tell me he just "loves the game so much".

There is just a conflict here: How can Brett Favre NOT come back this year, a year where they would be the front-runner for the NFC championship, but yet come back the last 4-5 years, when they were a rebuilding franchise and losing games??? It just doesn't make sense. I can understand if he "loved the game" and "just wanted to play"... But his talk about "wanting to compete and win a superbowl" is directly against his retirement now. And it just oddly and coincidentally happens the year after he breaks all of Marino's records. I won't say the guy is a jerk, but I don't think he's a "pure-hearted child" who just "LOVES to play the game" either...

Take heart--soon there'll be a new story for them to slobber over. It's their job, poor guys.

let's not change the subject...

sure, I can't stand that the ESPN network turned into the Brett Favre network (I don't remember this kind of stoppage of the world for Elway, Marino, Steve Young, etc.).... but the suspicion remains. I say Favre stayed around to get his records, and he has some greed, pride, and ego in him... and is not just some little innocent child playing the game he loves.

That could be, but in his book, Favre, he writes about growing up a Louisisan country boy who just loved the outdoors and playing football so much, he didn't want to quit. That's what he reminds me of--just a big kid who never wanted to quit playing.

Well, If I ever get around to writing MY book, which will be complete garbage but amusing, I will definitely have to write about the 8 hour days of basketball I would play, and have to be kicked off my neighbors basketball court because I kept them up from the "bounce.. bounce.. bounce... ....... swish/rim.. bounce bounce bounce"....

Of course Brett would never admit to that, and I would also bet that Brett never actually WROTE his book, but had someone write it for him who would paint the brightest picture possible of him. He may have loved the outdoors, and loved playing football as kid so much that he didn't want to quit.. many people do. The thing is, I don't think it carried over to the end of his career like everyone else seems to be under the spell of.

Someone else did help him write it, I forget who...and of course it glosses over a few things, but by and large I found it fairly honest.

Brett might not be the brightest bulb in the socket but at least he never embarrassed the city or the team with off-field shenanigans, like hundreds of other athletes have done.

Decka

Most athletes can say they have not embarrassed their organizations. As far as ESPN, John Madden, and sports announcers across the board... you might as well call him "St. Favre"... I just can't seem to understand the obsession and the neglect of WHEN he retired compared to when he broke the records. I smell something.. I think it's just my dad, me, and Trav LOL.
