What would make a swing, swing on it's own?

Interesting. Wonder what would happen if someone actually sat in the swinging seat? I'd have to try it, just to see what it felt like!

Someone does sit in one of the swings.

And if you're wondering about the wind, a fence was put up around the swings.

I used an article from TheSun in my Debate class, and my teacher strongly objected to any "dribbil" I manage to pull from that site.

Sorry, I would believe it a lot more if it wasn't for a tabloid which is the UK equilvent of the "Insider".

I hope so anyway. :)

It is funny actually.

The videos of the swings have kind of flooded the internet. There's a few where people have made fun of them.
Personally I think it's the wind.

But in the video where the swings are surrounded by a fence there is water under the swings. The water doesn't seem to be as choppy as it should be if the wind were to make all 3 swings go back and fourth.

Too bad they didn't put up a fence that would keep out the wind. ;)

The wind wouldn't have to be all that strong to set up a resonant oscillation in the swings. All you need is a steady wind and have the chains be the right length. If you notice when the swings begin to move they do so slightly at first, and as time passes their movement increases until it reaches its peak where it tends to remain in a relatively set pattern.

Here's a video of another hanging item that oscillated due to a steady wind....or maybe it was ghosts. :)

Is their water underneath the swings? Like a pipe, or aquifer, or anything like that?

How would underground water affect the wind?

It wouldn't, just thinking about what else it could be besides the wind.

I don't buy it.

Call me stubborn, I don't buy it.

An underground stream or spring could set up some sort of harmonics that would affect the swing furthest from the support legs.

These people explained it better than I did, but they do agree with me. ;)

I disagree with both you and the youtube people.

For the middle swing to be the one that always swings and for it to swing for ten days and then stop would demand a wind that comes for a ten day period and blows at the same speed over the course of that ten day period. That same speed wind would have to reoccur over and over.

I can agree with the outside force but I still think an undergroud stream is a more likely cause than the wind.

The wind would only have to blow at the same approximate speed, and I saw no claims that this phenomena manifested itself for a period of ten straight days (did someone sit and watch it for ten straight days?). Also, if it was due to some sort of vibration from an underground stream, why did it stop?

Frogger

According to the article it swings for ten days and then stops.

Resonance maybe? If it can cause a bridge to collapse (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tacoma_Narrows_Bridge#Collapse) it could probably make a swing oscillate as well.

Ok, assuming that's correct, why would it stop after ten days if it was due to an underground stream?

a drop in water flow...or an increase. resonance is touchy.
