King Abdullah urged to spare Saudi ‘witchcraft’ woman’s life
Sonia Verma in Dubai

A Saudi woman condemned to death for “witchcraft” is still clinging to hope that King Abdullah will spare her life after Human Rights Watch appealed her sentence.

Fawzi Falih faces imminent beheading for sorcery unless the King issues a rare pardon. But the influential rights group has stopped short of asking for intervention from foreign governments in the case, which has captured international attention and highlighted discriminatory aspects of the Saudi justice system, where courts often fail to follow due process.

Such was the case in the trial of Ms Falih, Human Rights Watch argues.

Religious police arrested the illiterate woman in 2005, allegedly beating her before forcing her to fingerprint a false confession. Her accusers included a man who claimed that she rendered him impotent with her sorcery.

In April 2006 the Saudi courts ruled the woman should be put to death to “protect the creed, souls and property of this country”.

In a letter sent to the King this week, Human Rights Watch wrote: “King Abdullah should halt the execution of Fawza Falih and void her conviction for ‘witchcraft’.

“The religious police who arrested and interrogated Fawza Falih and the judges who tried her in the northern town of Quariyat never gave her the opportunity to prove her innocence against the absurd charges,” it said.

Christophe Wilcke, the Human Rights Watch researcher in charge of the case, said: “I do feel that we have hope that she will be saved, by demonstrating how many things went wrong in her trial, and that we can persuade the King.”

Mr Wilcke said that Ms Falih was tried for the vague crime of witchraft and was convicted on the basis of faulty evidence. Apparently, Ms Falih’s lawyers were not even allowed in the courtroom. The trial, Human Rights Watch argues, failed to meet the Kingdom’s own standards of justice.

However, under Saudi law, Ms Falih has run out of avenues to appeal her sentence. Her life can only be saved by a rare intervention from King Abdullah. The last time he issued such a pardon was in December, for an 18-year-old girl from Qatif who was sentenced to lashes after she was gang-raped.

Her sentence was reversed in response to a chorus of international protest, which included rare criticism from Washington, Saudi Arabia’s long-time ally.

This time, Human Rights Watch has stopped short of asking for similar intervention: “This is a matter for Saudi to deal with,” Mr Wilcke said.

Hey, I believe in Witchcraft. I have a few Wiccan friends, and I have to admit they have been able to do some creepy stuff. By that I mean they act creepy, not crazy creepy, but just creepy.

I can't really explain it, which makes my argument weak and faulty, but when I talk to them about it they are really serious about it. There are strict guidelines a Wiccan follows, for example never casting a spell on someone without their permission. And from my conversations with them (in real life, mind you)(and not some idiot teenage kids who are doing it because there is something called a 'love spell') if someone breaks a guideline they are scorn for life.

I can't really say I've seen anything that qualifies as "witchcraft" but the way they act, I have to think that somewhere, someway, there is some sort of magick going on, its not some childish game with them, its a way of life.

I would argue that any magical qualities surrounding Wiccans are only in their heads and the heads of the observers. The mind is a powerful thing. This is admitted to in The Satanic Bible, as Satanism is another "magical" religion, but Satanism fully admits that the magic they practice is all psychology and superstition intended to fool the magic-performer's mind.

Incidentally, do any of those Wiccans weigh the same as a duck?

But what if she's guilty?
if she made some dude impotent, it's because he's obsessed with her, not vice versa.

Their minds might be the size of a duck's.

I don't mean to impugn your intelligence, Swordlol, but Wicca and paganism in general tend to attract a great deal of people you wouldn't ordinarily associate with. People with delusions to power, drama queens, and the like, who use spirit-babble to affect a mystique that isn't healthy. This sort of thing can infect your mind and make you accept ridiculous claims for the sake of getting along with people. The human element is a particularly vicious one to paganism/Wicca/new age. I've spent enough time in the community to be able to speak authoritatively on the subject. If you want to get involved in that sort of thing, please by all means do, it's loads of fun and you'll meet lots of really cool people, too. Just cultivate friendships outside of that so you don't find your entire social life revolving around a gaggle of misfits. And, for gawd's sake, don't take all that junk too seriously!

I'll befriend praticually anyone, except a few people that are just blantedly insane and I stay away from at all costs.

Like there is this guy in my town, has a yardsale every weekend, and he is just crazy. Has one of everything, and he will start a conversation about music with you for 7 hours.

Btw: Surronded by misfits? I'm at this forum! I mean look at my Personal User Tag for Heaven's sake!

Well, do you? Do you actively seek out new friends, or do you really mean you'll accept most other's attempts to befriend you?

Huh!?!?!

The charge was "witchcraft" yet the evidence was *faulty*.........?!?!?!?

How surprising.

One point -- If we are to believe that there is an entity called Satan, is belief in witches really that far-fetched? (For the record, I don't believe in either.)

Interesting... new avatar...

Kinda both. 100% at attempts befriended at me. 75% actively seeking out new friends.

What I cannot understand is why the Christian faction in the U.S. has not voiced its complete and unflinching support for the Saudi's and their intentions to execute this 'e-ville' woman.

After all ....

King James Bible
"Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live."

GOD'S WORD® Translation;
"Never let a witch live."

Darby Bible Translation;
"Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live."

English Revised Version
"Thou shalt not suffer a sorceress to live."

These true people of God really need to get together and support one another.
