I read the Mexico article on wikipedia and learned that Mexico is stinking rich as a country. It's the 12th largest economy in the world by GDP and the better cities have HDI (Human Development Index) comparable to Germany.

Sure the high % of people living in poverty accounts for the general image of Mexico as poor. But the top 15~20% apparently live luxuriously.

WTF.

I hear somewhere that the wealthy in Mexico eat steak, lobster, rare roast beef, etc.

Only the poor eat what we refer to as typical Mexican food--burritos, tacos, tamales, chimichangas, etc.

I think that's almost universally true of any "ethnic" food.
