I may make good ones for my sites, but I'm still unsure of what the procedures are with my .htaccess to do so.

Well you dont need htaccess, if you have a virtual account, like 97% people do, all you have to do is make a 404.shtml, and if you have a cpanel, it works even better, as it come with a very easy way to modify the page.
