I dont know how a court of law could find that someone jumping from the top of a building is not putting other people's lives in danger. Any number of things could happen that would cause a tragedy.

When I was a kid, I used to jump off my parent's roof all of the time. I know I didn't put anyone's life in danger.

Granted, this is a skyscraper and not a residence, but he said he had it planned so that he would land on a building in the event his chute didn't open. That seems believable to me. The thing that cost him credibility in my eyes is that he said "one foot forward for every foot I drop." That's just not true since your falling rate accelerates....

Of course there usually aren't sidewalks teeming with people directly below your roof either.

Regardless, I say getting grabbed by security guards is a risk directly tied to his sport of choice, so no soup for him!

Corliss is suing back for $30 million, claiming the guards who prevented him from jumping put his life in danger and caused him “severe emotional distress.” ... “But once I got over the suicide bars, their right to grab onto me ended.”

The guy's an idiot. If he was on/in the building (and he was), security has every right to stop him. It's not his freakin' building, and building owners are liable for accidents and deaths on their property, so it stands to reason that they'd do everything possible to prevent this asshole from jumping and either hurting/killing himself or passersby down below. I'm willing to bet, if they'd let the guy jump and his calculations were off causing him to hurt himself or others, he'd have tried to sue the building owners for not protecting him from injury.

Jerk. :rant:

I've known quite a few sport-parachutists in my lifetime.
(The folks who like to jump out of airplanes and helicopters and such.)
By and large, they are a fun-loving and affable bunch. Big drinkers, too.

I have also met just a few BASE jumpers.
They were all assholes with huge chips on their shoulders against the police.

If any of you reading this thread are BASE jumpers, please don't take offense;
I'm sure it was an aberration that the fellows I knew were assholes.
You are probably very nice.

What's funny is I heard about this story on the Today Show...and that very same night, watched one of those "World's Most Amazing Videos" shows where the very same guy jumped off a cliff that was next to a waterfall. He didn't get an even jump off the cliff and the wind blew him and his parachute into the waterfall where he slammed into some jagged rocks. After plummeting several feet to the waters below, he was submerged underwater for a couple of minutes or so. When he finally resurfaced, he had several open wounds across his back and chest and had several cracked and broken ribs. He soon felt a tingling sensation in his wounds, which was a type of bacteria in the water that was infecting his flesh. He managed to make it out to safety, but it was at least an hour before anybody could reach him.

Point being: yes, he's an idiot.
