View Full Version : Does anyone know of any good "Modern" Horror movies?

It seems like all of the best ones were all made either back in the late 70's or early 80's. Almost everything else that came after all seem to be nothing more than remakes. Can anyone recommend any good "Modern" horror or Monster movies that are actually worth watching?

Oh and I also like Interview With The Vampire and Dracula 2000, but I wouldn't call them "scary" or "horror", not exactly.

The Hills Have Eyes... made awhile back, but recently redone. Extremely SCARY movie (at least it was for me!) -- especially if you've ever spent any time in the desert. Just one of those scenarios I never wanna visit!!!

Sammarra-----now there's a little brat who should've been taken to the woodshed a LONG time ago, lol...that scene where she crawls out of the t v gives me nightmares to this day.
Blair Witch Project is also excellent.

The Hills Have Eyes was also great. And realistic - that's what I really liked about Saw too.
I didn't think The Ring was scary at all. I was bored out of my mind by that movie.
The remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was pretty good. I've never seen the original though. There's also a movie called Wolf Creek (another serial killer flick), about some young people vacationing in Australia who all get killed. I thought it was ok. Again, I tend to like the realistic ones - serial killers as opposed to ghosts or werewolves or whatever. (Except vampire movies, but they don't scare me, I just have a thing for vampires.)

Well I liked the original Hills Have Eyes. I have not seen the remake. I liked the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Boy was that lady a good screamer. There is a lot of interesting history with that movie. It was filmed outside Austin,Texas and they supposedly found marijuana growing near where they were filming and made use of it. That wouldn't surprise me at all for that area. It seems like the financial backers of the movie were shady New York organized crime people if my memory serves me correctly. I love vampire movies too! ;)

Yeah, in Hills... I especially liked the guy who started out as a meek little son-in-law who wouldn't even touch daddy's gun... and ended up slamming axes into people's heads. Kinda what you'd call your truly converted liberal, wasn't he?
I liked both chainsaw movies... and I'm with DF here... 'reality' horror is much scarier than made up stuff.
I prefer zombies over vampires. Just something about that strong, silent type.

Zombies... Now that's one thing I can't stand. Too scary. I never found zombies scary until a few years ago, when they became a regular feature in my nightmares. I've watched myself get eaten by them, etc. So now I tend to avoid zombie movies... although I never really watched them before that either.

My daughter's the same, AFT--she says it's the most boring movie she's ever slept through.
I found it disturbing and unsettling. The monster you don't see is always more terrifying than the one you do. The whispering in the woods, the sinister stick figures hanging from the trees, the final denoument in the abandoned house, with the bloody handprints on the wall---just the idea of being lost in the woods.....made for one bizarre, original, and truly frightening movie.
Just a matter of taste, I suppose. :)
PS. There is not a single scene of gore in this movie. It IS possible to make a horror film without the buckets of fake blood, impalements, and decapitations so prevalent in our modern-day "horror" movies.

Well I know it was a low budget movie but the way they promoted this movie as a documentary and then to finally see it was just a big let down. Not sure that if was not overly hyped I would have like it any better though. Was it innovative? Well for a low budget movie but how innovative is having dumb characters in a horror movie? And to me the characters were plain irritating. But your right it's a matter of taste. It just tasted bad to me. ;)

The only thing frightening about "The Mist" is that the plotline's been told aproximately 1000 times before and some few never noticed.
People trapped in a grocery store because a "nerve gas" or "chemical" or "atomic" leak in the atmosphere caused strange bloodthirsty creatures to go on the prowl for people to torture and eat.
Naw--we've never seen THAT before. Stephen King can write a good story. He can also rip off a good story.

I was very disappointed with that , myself. Probably just me...I've seen so many horror movies over the years, few really stand out for me anymore.
Anyone see "Horrorfest"?
Those movies are pretty cutting edge--some splatter, which I don't care for, others shockingly original. I'd recommend for any horror buff. I believe the first Horrorfest is now on DVD. Do not watch if you think "The Mist" is scary.

My point is that the last scene in the movie removes it from the "plotline told 1000 times" generalization you used to describe it.

Oh for christ's sakes, dharm--you LIAR........the movie ends with the hero shooting the people who'd escaped with him from the grocery store--he shoots Amanda, his son, etc, but runs out of bullets before he can shoot his own carboard cutout self, so in a fit of remorse he throws his bod outside the car to be eaten by a giant mutated creature, and as he's sitting there sobbing waiting for a gigantic insect to eat him, he hears something coming through the mist....and it turns out to be an Army vehicle.

So instead of it being a typical "end of the world" movie, it turns out to be something completely different. According to you, this twist of turning a monster movie into a deep psychological horror movie is something you have seen in "1000 other movies".
Can you name some of these other 1000 movies that have that same plot thread?

A "deep psychological horror movie"?????
Wow, dharm, remind yourself to NEVER watch Horrorfest or even
John Carpenter's The Thing, Cape Fear, Diabolique or even the zombie Dead movies.
What is so "psychological" about "atomic" created monsters that kill people?
What is so "original" about a lone hero who mercy-kills his friends and thinks himself the last man on earth only to realize that help was on the way?
This after said atomic monsters wreaked havoc on the entire Eastern seaboard and, for all we know, the rest of the planet.
It's just a crying shame they didn't eat Stephen King's typewriter.
Yep, I can name a thousand movies that deal with the end of the world as we know it. Are you wanting some where the monsters are genuine and genuinely kill off all people on earth, or most people, or ones in which it was all just a dream, like that one season of "Dallas"?
Are you wanting a black hero?
white hero?
woman hero?
animal hero?
Single-cell-organism hero?
(And speaking of horror--now "Dallas" even NOW gives me the SHIVERS!!!! )
rendova
04-08-2008, 03:26 PM
Since dharma hasn't let me know exactly what kind of "original" monster/horror movie he's looking for, i've taken it upon myself to randomly choose a few gems from the huge collection of giant-creature-that were-created by atomic testing/the US Army/chemicals/Nature gone wild/evil scientists, or just run of the mill space alien- movies to titillate him and send him into paroxysms of fear.
There are a VARIETY of noble heroes in each.
WARNING--these movies are not for pantywaists!
BE WARNED!
Also, because "The Mist" challenged the viewer to determine exactly what kind of creature was IN said mist, due to a lack of funds to spend on special effects/lazy director/drunken screenwriter, I've chosen a few movies that have either spiders, leeches, reptiles, fish, squid, crabs, ants, or various other invertebrates.
Them!
Beginning of the End
The Swarm
The Deadly Mantis
Panther Girl of the Kongo--(Dharm's own personal fave)
Attack of the Crab Monsters
The Black Scorpion
Monsters that Challenged the World!
Attack of the Giant Leeches
Earth vs the Spider ( too scary even for ME--that black- carpet-covered- VW bug sends me into paroxysms of fear every viewing)
Giant Spider Invasion
Arachnid
Frankenfish
I am not even going to list the SciFi channel's "Special' new movies they show on a regular basis--even I'm not THAT mean.
There ya go Dharm--sleep well........................

OK, saw The Ruins over the weekend. Totally dumb movie. Group of young Americans who are supposedly in Mexico on spring break venture out to some Mayan ruins to look for one of their brothers who's disappeared. End up 'tangling' with some scary VINES that have a mind of their own. Like one review I saw (after seeing the movie)... since vines aren't really too scary, there's lots of blood and self-inflicted gore to make up for the lack of horror! How true. (However, there was one pretty good scene where the kids keep hearing a cell phone ringing and go to investigate.... only to find out it's the little stems on the vines' flowers vibrating together to make a ringtone sound! Yeah, right.)
Save your money, folks. Even at early-bird prices, this one ain't worth it.
:(
SMW
P.S. One more thing... the whole movie was filmed in Queensland, Australia and the list of credits were nearly as long as the movie.... including 6 people listed as 'animal handlers'. Only animals we saw were one dog (in a 3 sec appearance) and one bird flying by. Makes ya wonder???

It was the VINES!! No explanation as to why or how they got there, but needless say, there was a LOT of cutting people open to try and remove them.
Wait til it comes out on DVD and rent it, Michelle. It's campy enough to justify a cheap rental. The cell-phone ringing alone is probably worth the price... gotta good LOL outta that part.
