Hai, can all you people who disagree with me and feel the need to throw personal insults at me do it here, so that the other thread can get back on topic and become civilized again?
Yes, god is a jerk, now c'mon!

LOL... Wow your a firecracker... it is hard to dance around as you are in the other thread. You try not to cross the line and insult, yet you get them tossed around a bit at you. You lob some clever use of wordings back, and your the devil..... yet all these shots are above the belt and nothing that really warrants wasting any more time, yet all you want to do through it all is get back on topic.
Keep fighting the good fight, chin up and all that,,,,, believe it or not this whole exchange with those involved has made my morning.

Glad you enjoy it :)
When people go personal it is always a downwards spiral. It always starts with someone who take my disagreement as an insult and start going defensive. I tend to defend myself as is natural, but I try to avoid letting it escalate. It is incredibly hard to disregard accusations tho. I should probably start ignoring them :)

It is one thing for people to call each other fat, old and wrinkly, bald, or even dumb but when you call the God people worship and believe in a jerk you have stepped over the line and gone from civil discourse with a few friendly jabs thrown in to being downright nasty.
Angelina has insulted people since she first began posting at Allforums and tried to use the, "Oh, I'm only a cute little girl who is kidding", defense. That might work when it comes to personal insults but it does not work when you are insulting people's religious beliefs.
Angelina owes a sincere apology and not just her whining that everyone is picking on poor little her.
I think you should add Romans 6:15 to your tag line. It is the logical summing up of the verses you refer to.

Why does religious beliefs have to be more sacred than other opinions? Why is it such a damn touchy subject? I know we're beyond the times where they burned you for speaking against it, but it is still taboo to question it seems.
People constantly try to discredit my beliefs, but that is perfectly ok it seems, as long as you don't touch the "absolute truth".

No. You're a stupid ass and a mean bitch. We ARE beyond the times when people were burned for speaking against religion but that does not mean so dumb little shit can just come in and insult people's religion with impunity. Words have consequences. You seem to not like that. In your warped little world some dumbass can say anything she wants and people shuld just accept it. That isn't the way it works. You, know, Bozo, instead of trying to justify your insulting of people's religion and whining about how you are being picked on you should have simply said you didn't realize how offensive your remarks were to some people and apologized. It would have all been over and done with. But, no, you had to start a thread whining about how poor little Angelina, the innocent little girl was being picked on by the bad old meanies.
You really fucked up, Angelina. You could have defused it but instead you chose to escalate it.
Remember, "You reap what you sow."
I have already apologized three times to mskimi for instance, all she does is giving me a immature refusal and further crap, so why even bother?

No - you didn't apologize but, I wasn't looking for an apology. You tried to make yourself the victim with the offer of a hug, which I politely refused. You are here to stir up those of us who believe in God and have a faith that you could never imagine. Like Frogger has said, you insult people's faith, you're going to get reactions. Definite trollish behavior.

You know, I don't mind taking heat when I screw up. But I'll be damned if I'm gonna sit back and pretend to be guilty of throwing as many (or more, to hear some people talk) insults toward atheists as they throw against Christians.
I never insulted a single person's beliefs during the entire discussion on the Religion & Psychology thread. No name calling, no references to their weak minds, nothing. Yet there are people who seem to feel 'victimized' by our exchanges and I'm being blamed as much as SHE is.
I copied and pasted my entire input into the subject conversation and am posting them here as proof that I never bashed anybody... at least up to the point where I decided I'd had enough and put Angelina on ignore.
Feel free to double check these if you think I purposely left something out or 'edited' what I'd previously said... like I was accused of doing on the Colorado thread. This is word-for-word everything I posted:
****************
I have PROOF that God exists. What PROOF do atheists have that he doesn't?
No more Oh Pleeeeeeease than this exchange.
Like I said... I have PROOF to back up the existence of God. What PROOF do any of you have to back up the NON-existence of God?
Not the lily... that was extra. The picture is much like the Bible... I didn't create it, just take it for what it is.
Mmmmkay?

Come on now, Prae, it's really not that complicated. I'm just saying that those who believe in God accept the Bible as proof that he exists. And I'm simply asking those who DON'T believe in God what they accept as proof the whole devine creator thing is a farce?
That's all. Real simple
Prove it's not factual, Nappy. Surely you know someone from 4 BC you can call, right?
So, Ang... you believe in graffiti, eh?
I don't have a problem with that. Except, of course, for the fact that it was only 'invented' in the last century or so.
I'm sure you have something else, right? Some brilliant scientific research book that states THERE IS NO GOD?
No hurry... I'll wait while you find one.
You're the one who insists on bringing up Bible stories, Prae. And aren't you the same person who was so level-headed to FT the other day.. explaining how religion was like a 'buffet' with everyone taking what they needed and discounting the rest? If so, you seem to be back-sliding into making hateful comments and talking down to believers.
You may consider the Bible a joke. I consider it proof God exists.
End of discussion.
(unless, of course, you come up with something to prove God DOESN'T exist?)
My argument is serious as a heart attack, Ang. You're the one who's posting cartoons.
But again... if you have any tangible proof to backup your beliefs, I'd be more than happy to consider it.
Sounds like a good plan, DF. Then in a few thousand years, if your words are still relevant and your book is still a best-seller, the whole world might believe in rainbow striped unicorns and we'd all have you to thank!
"Science" isn't exactly something you can hold in your hand and read, is it? It's mortals' opinions based on unprovable theories. I'm actually kinda surprised that someone as smart as you would believe something so intangible.
Until you have something more concrete to base your nonbelief on, think I'll just continue to rely on the written word.
Unless, of course, you have some written word to back up science's claim? Something that's survived for many centuries would be preferable.
And you know that because.....
Obvious to whom? You???
Like I said... prove it... or admit that you can't.
I couldn't agree more, DF. Taking the Bible literally is something very few people actually try to do. That's one reason alot of Christians go to church... where ministers with years of training interpret the meaning of God's word.
In fact, I think it'd be safe to say the Bible is taken more literally by people trying to prove there is no God than the other way around.*
SMW
*see Ang's post above.
Chill, Borg. All I'm asking for is proof there is no God.
I have proof there is... right there in my Bible. Show me your proof there's not and I'll be happy
I beg to differ, Borg. The very first verse of the Bible says, "In the beginning, GOD created the heavens and the earth..."
Now that that's settled, show me your proof.
Trolling? Does that mean asking questions you can't answer, Ang?
Yeah, maybe I am trolling... as in fishing for proof there is no God. So far, I haven't even gotten a bite.
I don't have to. I have all the proof I need to back up my belief in God. It would be up to YOU to prove what you say is accurate. Have you actually seen a written account of the orbiting teapot?
Better yet... have you actually seen a written account that God only exists in people's minds?
If so, please provide a link.
Au contraire, my dear. There IS proof there is a God! Just because you don't believe it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
But you're right about one thing... there is NO proof He doesn't exist. If there was, I'm pretty sure this board would be filled with evidence as we speak.

Don't get nasty just because you can't come up with an answer, Borg. It's very un-mod-like of you.
Catch up, Prae... we already discussed that very few people take the Bible literally. Really, dear, you're usually much more on top of discussions than this.
See, you don't understand Ang. I don't have to prove anything. The Bible's trustworthiness has been proven by the mere fact that it's survived through thousands of years of investigation and disbelievers to remain the most powerful book on this planet in 2008.
Now you may not believe what it says, but you can't deny it exists.
May I sing?
*Jesus love me, this I know. Because the Bible tells me so.*
See? Even most little children are more enlightened than you.
What's invalid about demanding proof that God doesn't exist? Besides the fact that you can't provide it, I mean.
Now you're saying something I can agree with, Borg. Although 'extended metaphor' isn't a phrase I'd use to describe my 'vision' of what God is... neither is a 'little ole man with a gray beard, sitting in a golden chair, judging his handiwork.'
I believe in a supreme being... but I'll be the first to admit that I don't know what God looks like. The term God, in my mind at least, means a higher power and manifests itself in many, many ways in different religions. I also believe we earthly beings are not equipped to understand all the secrets of the universe... try as we might to explain them scientifically.
Will we ever understand? According to the Bible, we will. But not in this life... maybe not even in this dimension!
Accepting the unexplainable is what faith is all about. Demanding proof that God does NOT exist is no more ridiculous than demanding proof that he does. But it sure does seem to rile people up, doesn't it?
That's YOUR interpretation, dear. Not exactly what the good book says. But please... by all means, feel free to paraphrase if it makes you feel less threatened.
BTW, it was you who was talking about the religious buffet the other day, wasn't it? Just curious... I thought that was rather profound.
LOL, good twist, DF. Although nobody even MENTIONED 'these things' and the only position I was defending was that there is NO proof there is NO God.
But like I told Prae, if it makes you feel better to believe that story, more power to ya.
Here's my 'vision' of how God fits into our lives... very loosely stated, because, as we've already established, very little can be PROVEN beyond a resonable doubt.... and I'm certainly no scholar of theology.
But, what if:
There IS an entity that's responsible for life as we know it. For grins, let's call it GOD. Maybe God's mission was to establish life where none has existed before. Using planet earth as an example, what if God placed that first little cell that later, thru evolution, became mankind. Human beings walked upright and continued to progress by forming clans, then societies and cities and in general... became civilized people. All according to God's 'plan' for life here on earth.
So then, God determines mankind has evolved sufficiently to need some rules to live by if they were to prosper and thrive, so somehow, what we now call 'religious teachings' were imparted to the societies via some method we can't comprehend. I've always envisioned it as someone flying over in a plane (OK, so I might've been drunk the first time I envisioned that... but nonetheless, it stuck with me), metaphorically 'dropping instructions' all over the middle east. Whether it was by 'divine inspiration' or actual tablets of writing... doesn't really matter. The thing is... RULES for living were given to the people of this planet. It took over 1000 years and many, many authors and many, many long hours of work before there was finally a BIBLE issued. At the same time, and in the same general area... other societies were compiling their own 'rules' based on their understanding of God's instructions. That's how we ended up with so many different religions... not everybody was 'on the same page.' One thing most religions agree on, however, is that first line of our 'instructions'... IN THE BEGINNING, GOD CREATED THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH..." A metaphor for describing how life started. I believe differences in religion are OK with God... as long as the basic concept of there actually existing a GOD is adhered to.
While the Bible was being compiled, God sent Jesus here to help teach mankind how to live according to God's wishes. A little later, after Jesus was crucified, mankind changed the calendar from BC to AD to mark the beginning of a new era for citizens of earth. An era in which we had a set of written instructions to live by and the life of Jesus while he was on earth to use as an example. God 'knew' not everyone would follow the rules, and that was OK... even though strict punishments for NOT following the rules was included in the Bible. Nobody's ever gotten struck down for disobeying one of the ten commandments to my knowledge. However, to this day MOST of the world still believes what's written in the Bible and strives to live up to those instructions.
I don't think God is a man or a woman... or even a 'human being' who's limited to breathing oxygen and staying 'grounded' thanks to gravity. I believe God is much more sophisticated than that... and I also believe we are not meant to comprehend the 'meaning of life'. Only to live it. If you follow the teachings of the Unity Church, you might think there are actually multiple 'phases of life' existing on this planet right this very minute... but in different 'dimensions' that none of us can understand. I read once that these 'planes' exist in harmony the same way radio waves exist in the same space without running into each other. Except, of course, for that very infrequent occurrence when someone claims to have seen a UFO... or a ghost... or some other 'unnatural' vision, like a bright light in a tunnel at the moment of death.
OK, I know this is some pretty far-out stuff and I'd never try to take any of it to the bank. But it does describe how I see God's role in our lives. And while I don't claim to understand it, I certainly respect and appreciate God's power.
Anybody else care to offer their description of how we all got from that first cell to this message board? I'd be very interested in your version.
SMW
I think part of the issue here is that yesterday we were discussing whether or not there is a God. That's actually a much more important question than whether or not man evolved from apes. *yawn* In fact, if there was no God, who created the apes??
I thought we made wonderful progress yesterday in coming to an agreement that there just might be something out there more powerful than mankind. Nobody posted a link to any pics, though... so if that's what you're waiting for, you're outta luck!
But on the bright side, nobody posted a link to anything proving God does NOT exist either... so there's definitely light at end of the tunnel!
What a surprise... yet another religious thread turning into nothing but hateful, insulting posts directed at Christians. Way to go, guys. By now, we should expect nothing less, eh?
You forgot not-very-bright, irrational, moronic Christians who believe in noodlemen. If you're gonna join in the game, get your teammates terms right.
It's really a shame that people can't hold an intelligent, respectful discussion here without it escalating into hateful name calling. Maybe it's because at least one of the mods chooses to jump in at the first hint of discourse and add fuel to the fire? Ya think?
"mental lightweights" -- there's another one. Way to go, Borg.
So now you consider Angelina an expert on the subject?

I would guess you mean religion is a SHAM, Shorty. Lots of people feel that way. Mostly people who've never thanked God for their many blessings, but are quick to blame him when things go wrong.
Nobody ever said life was fair. We all have our own crosses to BEAR. And we all choose whether to go it alone... or ask God for help.
Life is all about choices, ain't it?
And anybody who doesn't agree isn't taking Critical Thinking 101 in community college.
Proof, please.
Mods shouldn't jump in to further instigate discord among posters, DF. Unless, of course, that's why he was chosen to be a mod? He never seems to join any discussion if not for the purpose of fanning the flames. I have no problem with him being a mod... like I said, I think he acts more like a mini-asshole first... his mod duties come in second.
I gave this subject some thought, DF... and just want to express my feelings about whether or not Borg should be required to follow a stricter set of rules than other posters or whether or not mods in general should engage in the same activities as regular members as well as their official duties.
There are a couple of reasons I disagree with your view on this subject.
Number 1 thing is... a mod has the authority to ban another poster... or at least to recommend to the other mods that someone be banned. As touted in another thread, I believe it was Borg who made the statement that he didn't need a REASON to permanently ban anybody... that it wasn't a 'punishment,' simply a way to communicate to someone that they weren't welcome here. (I believe a poster named Jenny was the subject. Since she was before my time, I have no opinion on whether or not she deserved to be permanently banned.)
Number 2 thing is... Borg has access not only to my work IP address, but my home IP address as well. Not saying that he would ever use that information against me (or anyone else here), but the fact remains that he COULD if he wanted to. That's alot of power to allow someone to have over me, and with it, comes at least a little responsibility on his part.
For those two reasons alone, I refuse to sit back quietly and be insulted and/or attacked by Borg. It was enough of a lesson learned when he and the other mods allowed the gang attack on the Colorado thread because, as I was told, I made a volatile accusation (that atheists spread hate, which BTW, I still believe) and deserved whatever I got. Yet, I've been 'warned' to behave for being too tough on Warrior and making a comment to the crybaby Dharma after he put me on ignore. Frogger has been sent to time out for disagreeing with a certain poster as well. Yet ranting maniacs like FT and Shamen are free to say anything they please with NO threats of repercussions at all. Nobody knows what the 'rules' are here, because there are no TOS.
I've accepted the fact that it's open season on Allforums for bashing Christians or Conservatives, but I'll be damned if I take insults from a punk mod who has a severe case of overinflated importance without at least protesting his inability to treat me with the same respect you seem to think he deserves.
Sorry to decline your 'wish' that I ignore Borg's mod status. However ridiculous it may be to put such an immature person 'in charge', he represents some form of 'authority' here and I don't believe he deserves to abuse posters while hiding behind that 'mod badge.'
'nuff said?

Regardless of what one does or doesn't believe about God, I find the HISTORY of religion to be a fascinating subject, don't you, Ren? Since mentioning the calendar changing from BC to AD, I've been doing a little research into the history of our calendar have come to one definite conclusion. Anyone who doubts the enormous impact religion in general, and Christianity in particular, have had on this world are simply sticking their heads in the sand and refusing to see the obvious proof.
SOMETHING happened in ancient times that totally altered life on earth. One of the more interesting questions I have is this...
If there was no God, no divine inspiration, no 'teacher' named Jesus... how the heck did so many diverse, geographically remote civilizations succeed in accomplishing such feats as compiling a Bible and determining that the calendar should be redesigned around Jesus' birth, etc., etc., etc.... without any one 'leader' to guide them?
I know for certain that mankind couldn't possibly accomplish anything so wonderous today... and we've got leaders coming out our wazoos!
Your thoughts?
Great Twain story. And I totally agree with his musings... something happened back then. Something big enough that multitudes of people worked years and years to get a description in writing so that we could read about it today. I've seen 'mass hysteria' used to explain riots and looting and the crushing of innocent bystanders when soccer games got out of control... but I simply can't accept that as an explanation of what happened in ancient times.
Interesting, Dio. I can truly understand how non-believers would fear living in 1645. But since that's certainly not relevant in today's times... what is it about Christians that makes you fear the consequences of their power over you today?
Good point, OP. As I've said before... why do atheists fear those who would do them no harm? I know of NO religion (at least in this country) where it's part of their 'dogma' to harm people who don't believe the same way they believe. It just doesn't happen.
I believe the 'make another miserable' part has much more to do with a non-believer's own insecurities than an attempt to prove another person wrong for 'scientific' reasons. After all... what could one possibly gain by persuading another person to question their faith?
If you don't have anything to add, why don't you just sit back and read, Nappy. Heaven forbid, you might learn something.
Which brings up an interesting question, Ang.
If you're not a believer, why do you take the offensive to 'prove' your point to those of us who do believe? At times, it seems like you're desperate to make sure everyone understands your reverence for scientific studies.
Is it any different for one to be insulted by having their faith questioned than it is for one to be insulted by having their belief in science questioned?
SMW
P.S. BTW, you can say what you like, but if you're an Agnostic, then I'm the Queen of England. Just ain't happening, g/f. You're one of the most obvious Atheists I've ever run across. Wonder why you're hesitant to admit that?

Easy there, Ang. You're sliding right back into that bitter atheist posting style. Would it be possible for you to ignore Christians who post things you don't like, or is in your very nature to attack them?
Personally, I welcome input from anybody who has an opinion. Even more so if they happen to be one of those vile Chistians who threaten you so much.
Yeah, right Nap. Like Judge Judy sez... I'm better on my worst day than you'll ever be on your best day.
BTW, how come you have so much time to hang around the boards these days. Lost that big low-voltage electrical job you had? Bet you sure miss that $8 an hour, don't ya hon? Probably don't miss installing those security systems though. All that manual labor must be a real strain on your big ole brain.
Bless your heart.
Here's what Angelina really means... she's much more comfortable discussing religion, creationism, evolution and God in general with other atheists. If you're a Christian, she will do her best to run you off this topic.
Here's what Nappy really means...
I understand what you're saying, Dio... and in some respects, agree with you. For example, there was an Egyptian man here who murdered both his teenage daughters a few days ago here because they had become too 'Americanized' and he disapproved of them dating outside their religion. Very sad story.
But I'm sure you're also aware that for every story of some poor soul whose life is 'damaged' by religion, there are MILLIONS and MILLIONS of people who manage to live their lives with no ill effects at all and many more MILLIONS who actually benefit from the work of people who believe it's their calling to serve God's children.
I've just never been a fan of the 'punish the many for the sins of the few' philosophy.
I think it would be WONDERFUL to actually hear an atheist describe the way they think and even more spectacular to hear about any PROOF they have of their (dis)beliefs! Unfortunately, that doesn't happen. The only thing I've ever seen an atheist discuss is how stupid us Christians are.
How 'bout some of that scientific PROOF, y'all. Show me where science has proved there couldn't possibly be a God? Then maybe I'll give you a little more credit for being so sure-fired positive of your advanced intelligence.
You ARE an atheist, Ang. Full-fledged, Christian-bashing, hate-filled, my way or the highway ATHEIST. Your posts leave no room to think you have a single doubt in your beliefs.
In fact, I hereby nominate you for Allforums Atheist of the Year Award. Good luck with that... there's tons of competition.
Oh please... do show me where I've EVER said I hate atheists... or anybody else for that matter. Definitely not my style, Ang. You must have me confused with someone else.
Not at all, LF. You must've missed the discussion yesterday where written proof was submitted as evidence that God exists. (and note, I never asked for SCIENTIFIC proof... however, I would accept that in writing as well if someone would provide me a link.)
Here's my version of proof:
Quote:
Gen 1:1 IN THE BEGINNING GOD CREATED THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH.
Scoff at whether the Bible is a reliable source or not... it's still a source. And one that's been around for thousands of years. Much more 'proof' than atheists have been able to provide that God does NOT exist.
In fact, I think that's what has them so riled up here today. It's hard to swear on a Bible that something's true if you don't believe in the Bible.
Nope, there's just one me, Ang and I've never said I HATE anybody. Either prove I have or stop making up things to try and prove some point.
I don't HATE. But I do have very little regard for those who do... especially when they lump whole groups of innocent people into the mix.
Now this is really funny. You can't have it both ways, Ang. If you have the slightest doubt about whether or not God exists... you can't possibly refuse to consider that we all might have arrived here due to intelligent design or creationism and not evolution. You seem to be pretty clear in expressing your opinion that people who believe in such nonsense are a few cans short of a six-pack.
Which way is it?
And why would you post that insulting picture of the noodle-god if you have even the slightest tinge of belief in a supreme being?
I don't have to prove anything, dear. You prove my hate accusations are right everytime you've posted on the subject of religion here.
No wonder you're so confused, Ang. There is only ONE God. Different sects have different beliefs, but there is still only ONE God.
And since there are portions of the Bible you find non-trustworthy, you believe the whole thing is a big farce? And not just the Bible.. all religious writings that have survived for eons?
I'd say you have some real problems if you can't let go of the belief that you know more about such a complicated subject than 80% of the world's population.
Heck, maybe we're all wasting our time discussing the subject -- maybe the world should worship YOU! After all, you seem to think you have ALL the answers!!!
Nope.. insults and name-calling = hate.
Pretty simple, eh?
Well, DF... if you're right and most people here generally agree there COULD BE a God, all the talk about various religions and evolution and creationism and science vs faith is really a total waste of time, isn't it? Because if there IS a God, then God is the only one who knows for sure how things work. And if there IS a God, posting silly little pictures of 'noodlegod' is blasphemy in the first degree. Not something I care to be a part of.
It's sad, really. I enjoy discussing the philosophy of how the world began... but not when people are so quick to tell you how stupid you are for having faith. And even worse, acting as if they alone know the TRUTH.
Can't speak for anyone else, but I gladly turn this discussion back over to the atheists. It's obviously much more enjoyable for them to bash Christians without actually having to listen to anything Christians have to say.
Decka, I respect your comments and agree that some may think my actions here are un-Christian. But one thing I'd like for you to keep in mind. I don't necessarily consider myself a "Christian" in the sense that I'm speaking for an organized religious group and 'spouting off' their dogma. I'm speaking for myself, as a person who believes in GOD. That's all. And I've certainly never claimed to know all the answers. All I've claimed is that the Bible says God exists. And I happen to believe the Bible is a reliable source of historical information about creation. So if you don't mind, I'll continue to express my opinions here... just like everyone else feels free to do. However, I will add that if I were a church-going Christian, I'd be totally out of line. Not for speaking of my faith... but for congregating with atheists. I know of no church that believes that's a good idea. And I can certainly understand why.
There is one point I want to make about my earlier exchange with DF regarding people who talk like atheists, but actually aren't sure whether or not there's a God. Something I've heard more than one preacher say. There is no middle ground for believing in God. Either you're for God or you're against God. Being a little bit of a believer is like being a little bit pregnant. It's just not possible. Sure, lots of believers go thru periods when they have doubts. More often than not, they reach out for answers and find them. Having faith doesn't come naturally... one has to make a conscience decision to believe. It's called turning your life over to God and trying to live so that if you face Him someday, you won't have to hang your head in shame.
I didn't come here to discuss whether or not fish grew legs and crawled out of the water and eventually became man. Nor did I come here to discuss the pros and cons of Christianity vs Judism, or argue about the wonderful advances being made by scientists. I came here to state why I believe in God. And I have, so I really have nothing further to add to the discussion.
I apologize to those I might have offended. And I pray for those who offended me. I wish you all peace and happiness, whatever road you decide to take.
SMW
P.S. to LiquidFork -- I'm glad you've had pleasant experiences with the mods here. While they've warned me several times to stop, they've never lifted a finger to warn someone to stop verbally abusing me, and in fact, have often jumped in during a heated discussion to assist others with the verbal abuse. It's a free site and I'm free to leave anytime I like, so I really don't pay much attention to them. But that doesn't mean I'm not gonna strike back when they jump into the frenzy. I may be outspoken, but I'm not gonna be anybody's doormat. And that includes the young Mr. Borg.
I suggest you try reading up about Christian beliefs regarding converting atheists, Borg. I can't really speak for other religious groups, because I'm not familiar with them. Every church I've ever been involved with encourages their congregation to help save people who are 'lost,' but while having no 'official policy' regarding atheists, definitely does not encourage their members to go out and 'convert an atheist'. One of the reasons for the "If you're not FOR God, you're AGAINST God" sermon is that many religious people not only believe in Christ, they also believe in Anti-Christ/Satan/Devil/whatever. Really not much of an argument to say if there is such a thing, he/she/it is undoubtedly a non-believer and no church would take the chance of pitting a faithful member against that kind of challenge.
And I am not your enemy. Also... I didn't write the sermon I talked about. But since I've heard the same message more than once, I will admit it's something I think about now and then. No doubt that's the goal of the whole concept -- to make people THINK about their beliefs!
Yes, it is. But I would really appreciate if you would come up with less insulting comments than things like "poor persecuted Christian" when I protest people using terms like weak-minded, unintelligent moron to describe my opinions. I don't mind holding my own against verbal taunting, but I resent your adding to it. I don't think it's too much to ask that you refrain from insulting me... and I promise to refrain from insulting you as well.
Peace, brother. Life's too short to make enemies.

Well, I accomplished provoking some holier than thou asses, so I'm happy...
Is that your only goal? There's a difference between insulting someone in the heat of the moment (as I believe everyone on this board is guilty of, except perhaps a very select group of coolheaded folks like Brooks, whom I greatly admire) and deliberately doing it to piss people off.

Wow... this is getting dragged on wayyyyyyy too long. Dont get me wrong i am a huge fan of squabbles on forums... I look at them like prize fights... every once and awhile you get two heavy hitters going head to head (my favorite was frogger VS foolsworth or maybe Dharma VS vile) but this issue has been beat dead long ago...

This is so sad. She stated an opinion (be it offensive, or not - it was still just HER opinion (based on scientific fact, but I digress)), and she's been lambasted for damn near 25 plus pages. Why? For simply stating that it's IRRATIONAL TO BELIEVE IN THE BIBLE AS "PROOF" OF GOD WHEN MUCH OF IT HAS BEEN DISPROVEN SCIENTIFICALLY. I mean, common sense dictates that doing so is akin to questioning the honesty of a political candidate when 75% of what they say is proven (beyond any doubt) to be factually incorrect. In her defense, she's also said, on countless occasions, that she doesn't have a problem with faith, but religion, OTOH, and the "infallible" doctrine that inevitably follows, can easily be called into question when you're basing your entire belief system on the "teachings" contained within. In short, and contrary to what was said/implied in the other thread, she wasn't out to "prove" if there's a god or not (which no one can do), but rest assured, anyone with a working knowledge of basic science can sure-as-shit disprove the bible. That doesn't mean you can't draw personal inspiration from the parables, and on that note, she never said you couldn't (or shouldn't, for that matter). As a matter of fact, she went so far as to say there's nothing wrong with anyone's inherent belief system, but when you hold up the bible as "proof" of god's existence (or say something along the lines of, "I don't need your science" ), then you're either irrational or ignorant....take your pick.
Now, if there's anything wrong with saying that, then this isn't a discussion board at all; it's a fucking joke filled with thin-skinned doctrinaires. If you don't like that assessment – then too bad - eat me. JMO

You usually know what you are talking about Prae, but in this instance you are wrong on more than one count.
count #1 Angelina did not simply state that she does not believe in God. She said God is a jerk, something quite different. I was a trollish statement whose only purpose was to provoke other posters. That has long been cause for at least a temporary banning. No one called for it but you know as well as anyone else that trolls are not to be tolerated.
Once she knew how offensive her post was to many other posters she chose to escalate things by complaining that she was being picked on, suggesting it was for no reason.
Count #2 There is as much scientific proof for events in The Bible as there is scientific proof against events in The Bible. My degrees are in Biology, Medieval History and Education. What are yours in? As someone fairly conversant with the field of science I have no difficulty believing the central message of The Bible; that God created the world and that Jesus came to Earth to atone for man's sins. You may not believe that but you have absolutely no proof that it isn't so.
Maybe you think her statement that, God is a jerk, is based on scientific fact but I daresay there are a lot of people including a lot of scientists who disagree with you.
You are usually to good a poster to state opinion as fact. Don't go starting to do it now.

I think the Old Testament God was certainly a jerk. Don't you? Hell, I've heard Jews say something along those lines.

I can't say that I see it as trolling OR a call for temporary banning. Was it offensive? Sure, but it wasn't trolling. On that note, she took a lot of shit in the other thread. JMO.

Really? Well, for starters, where's the proof that the planet is only 6,000 years old?
My degrees are in Biology, Medieval History and Education. What are yours in?
Well, I guess that makes you more qualified than I am to discuss theology.
Oh, and my degree is in Business/finance.
As someone fairly conversant with the field of science I have no difficulty believing the central message of The Bible; that God created the world and that Jesus came to Earth to atone for man's sins.
Well, that's your prerogative.
You may not believe that but you have absolutely no proof that it isn't so.
You're right, I don't. Just outta curiosity, what field of science helps you believe "that God created the world and that Jesus came to Earth to atone for man's sins"?
Maybe you think her statement that, God is a jerk, is based on scientific fact but I daresay there are a lot of people including a lot of scientists who disagree with you.
Again, I don't feel it's a "fact", merely an opinion that you strongly disagree with. Would it enrage you if someone drew an unfavorable cartoon of your Christian "god"? Gee, I really hope not, 'cause that sounds an awful lot like something that would bother a zealot.

This statement shows you don't really know your Bible. The Bible doesn't claim the world is only 6,000 years old. It was bishop James Usher who said the world began in 4004 BC.
You said science disproves The Bible so yes, I do think my degree in biology makes me better able to discuss the topic. The fact that I studied religion formally for four years makes me better able to discuss theology.

I don't think science disproves the Bible... I think it casts doubt upon certain parts. (However, many of those parts could have been meant to be seen as allegorical, and therefore aren't necessarily disproved at all.)

Really? Hmmm - if we go back 6000 years, we come to the time of Creation, and Adam and Eve (4004 BC). Luke, evangelist and historian, records Adam as the first man.
The Bible is clear that Adam, the first man, was created on the sixth day of God's Creation Week - ipso facto, the earth must be 6000 years old.
I don't see how you can deny this, but if your argument centers on the fact the bible didn't directly come out and state that verbatim, then you're absolutely correct, Frogger. My bad. Maybe I shouldn't read into it....
You said science disproves The Bible so yes, I do think my degree in biology makes me better able to discuss the topic.
Fine. That's your opinion. The majority of the people who reside in our bible belt completely agree with you. Who knows....maybe I am wrong.
The fact that I studied religion formally for four years makes me better able to discuss theology.
Maybe, then again, perhaps it only serves to make their factual (read; definitive) statements more palatable in your mind.

You may not believe that but you have absolutely no proof that it isn't so.
You are an intelligent and educated person. So, asking to DISPROVE something is completely irrational and you know it. Prove to me that bigfoot DID NOT live in my basement 10 years ago - I say he did. Does that make sense?
The burden of proof is on the party making the claim. For example, Jesus came to earth to atone for man's sins. Prove it.
While I'm on this subject - you know the human mind is capable of making itself believe anything.

I think a large part of the problem is that people on both sides of the argument hold their beliefs to be fact, and they discuss their opinions in those terms. That makes it difficult to find any common ground on which to base a reasonable discussion.

See what I'm saying? I'm apologizing, yet I'm being told it was a "fake" apology and I had evil intentions by attempting it. Now what am I supposed to do other than laugh and shake my head?
Oh, I know, Borg, can you find that /facepalm thingy with Picard?

don't take this the wrong way Angelina, but maybe you should stop fanning the flames with this. If you go back and read both threads, after you left yesterday very little was said and people were there joking around and stuff.
You reply in both of them and I can guarantee by Monday morning it's going to be an all out war again.
Stating an opinion is fine, but when all it's doing is keeping something like this going, ask yourself,is it worth it?
If I responded to every little thing someone said about me or my opinions,I'd have been banned a long time ago.
