My brother bought me the CD for xmas.. because I had honestly never cared for Dylan's work, but had never heard anything from this supposed "top 5 records of all time".
I listened to the record all the way through.. and was severely unimpressed. There just really wasn't anything there. I don't see how this record is seen as such a "groundbreaking record" that "changed everything".. of course, I have to take the musical context into consideration.. perhaps compared to what was coming out then, it was something new and different. But it sure doesn't stay listenable over a few decades IMO...
I just can't get over how bad this album was for all the hype it's gotten over the years.

Sometimes some of the best music grows on you. This album changed the world. It was Dylan's first all electric album. It influenced everyone from the Beatles to Hendrix! It is worth it for the first song alone although it has some other great stuff-Desolation Row. Some of his folk fans might have been turned off when he started playing an electric guitar but in influenced so many other people and turned on a lot of people to folk-rock. There is Dylan and then there is everyone else!

obviously you happen to be a Dylan fan... Of course I didn't grow up in that era.. but i'm the type that has always thought that the Beatles and Dylan and the Stones were big bands and famous, but their music wasn't masterful. They weren't "musical geniuses". Of course the Beatles had a ton of #1 hits, but people were obsessed with their hair, dress attire, and ringo's glasses and stuff.. you don't have to be a great musician to be big in music, today's music is a perfect example... Record sales don't really tell the tale of how great of a musician you are. Entertainer? That's a different category.

There were so many bands influenced by the Beatles,Rolling Stones and Dylan. And you certainly don't have to have grown up in that era to be a fan. And look how long the Beatles music has been popular after they broke up. It does not really have anything to do with their hair. And Dylan and the Rolling Stones are still touring and popular. And obviously you don't have to be a great musicain to be big in the industry look at the Spice Girls!

I certainly agree that you don't have be a great musician to be big in the industry... there are countless examples out there today.
I don't deny anyone's influence... The beatles probably caused many of today's older musicians to even pick up a musical instrument.
All I'm saying is that from purely a musical standpoint.. I was disappointed in Dylans "highway 61", and have always been disappointed with the Beatles, Stones, and Dylan on the music front. They were great showmen, and entertained well... and had good music.. but entertainment and music should be separate categories.
