Mom sells rule-breaking son's car
The Associated Press
DES MOINES, Iowa - Jane Hambleton has dubbed herself the "meanest mom on the planet."
After finding alcohol in her son's car, she decided to sell the car and share her 19-year-old's misdeed with everyone - by placing an ad in the local newspaper.
The ad reads: "OLDS 1999 Intrigue. Totally uncool parents who obviously don't love teenage son, selling his car. Only driven for three weeks before snoopy mom who needs to get a life found booze under front seat. $3,700/offer. Call meanest mom on the planet."
Hambleton has heard from people besides interested buyers since recently placing the ad in The Des Moines Register.
The 48-year-old from Fort Dodge says she has fielded more than 70 telephone calls from emergency room technicians, nurses, school counselors and even a Georgia man who wanted to congratulate her.
"The ad cost a fortune, but you know what? I'm telling people what happened here," Hambleton says. "I'm not just gonna put the car for resale when there's nothing wrong with it, except the driver made a dumb decision.
"It's overwhelming the number of calls I've gotten from people saying 'Thank you, it's nice to see a responsible parent.' So far there are no calls from anyone saying, 'You're really strict. You're real overboard, lady.'"
The only critic is her son, who Hambleton says is "very, very unhappy" with the ad and claims the alcohol was left by a passenger.
Hambleton believes her son but has decided mercy isn't the best policy in this case. She says she set two rules when she bought the car at Thanksgiving: No booze, and always keep it locked.
The car has been sold, but Hambleton says she will continue the ad for another week - just for the feedback.

I think it's asinine. Most "parenting," is just a ridiculous power struggle between parent and child that does neither any good. Selling his car does nothing to alleviate an unhealthy parental relationship and does everything to exacerbate it, and attempts to get order by breaking the kid's spirit. The parents should have taken the car away, and grounded him, and instead filled up the kids time with good, wholesome activities such as volunteering for community activities, visiting relatives, and getting a job. Then, once the kid gets back on track, let him drive his car again. Of course, it doesn't get the parents immediate fame around the town, but oh well. Maybe the parents should have considered doing some community work themselves if that's what they wanted.

If he breaks their rules, he can buy his own goddamn car. He should already have a job, considering that he's 19 years old.

You don't buy something like a car for someone, then all of a sudden take it away for one breach of the rules. It's stupid. Why buy the car in the first place? You have to accept the fact that the rules are going to be broken from time to time. The kid acted like more of an adult in that situation than the parents did. Leaving the ad open for another week because she likes the attention? What the hell?
I detest the whole perception in this country that kids are turning into uncontrollable demons. I'd sure like to meet these uncontrollable demons. Some kids have poor relationships with their parents, most have decent ones, a few have great ones. If you have a poor relationship with your child, you need to be the adult and take responsible steps towards repairing it. Not buy him a car then take it away, and trumpet it all over town! What the hell does that accomplish?
DarkFantasy96

Perhaps it was a mistake for them to buy him a car in the first place...
If they told him that there were rules, and his keeping the car would depend upon not breaking them, then they should do what they said they would do and take the car away. Otherwise, what's the point of having rules? My parents told my brother that if he didn't keep his grades up (As & Bs), they would sell his car. Period. If he started getting all Cs, and they didn't sell the car, that would be bad parenting. If you set out rules and consequences, breaking the rules had better lead to the consequences you said they would lead to.

You don't make such thickheaded hard and fast rules in the first place. Enforcing rules really doesn't do a whole lot for a person. Experience, leadership, and empathy does. If a child runs amok, one needs to apply those three things to enrich his life to the point where he finds that misbehaving isn't accomplishing anything. Hard-nosed discipline isn't all its cracked up to be in the parenting world. It's the lazy man's way out. A father coaching a son through his baseball practices and games does ten times the good that punishing him for breaking the window does.
Kids misbehave to get attention. Hard and fast application of discipline gives them that attention, and exacerbates the problem.

I think we disagree on parenting, Nappy. I think children need to have rules, and breaking the rules needs consequences. I am the product of very lenient parenting, and as a result I now have zero respect for my parents and pretty much don't listen to them at all (except my step-mother, who has always been a very reasonable parent, neither strict nor overly lenient).

Sure, they need to have rules, but it shouldn't make up the whole, or even a big part, or your parenting. And you shouldn't set in stone what the consequences should be. That's inflexible and unnecessarily authoritative. Just say there will be consequences, and mean it. I never said the kid shouldn't have had any consequences for the booze under the seat. But selling the car and making a public spectacle of it goes entirely too far.

I didn't say that they should make up the whole of the parenting. If my parents did what his did I would find it an amusing addition to a well-deserved punishment. If I were the parents I probably would have given him a pass on the first offense, and waited until the second time to sell the car (and there would've been a second time). I would've told the kid he couldn't drive the car for like a month, ground him for 2 weeks. If it was his friend's alcohol I would tell him that he needs to be a little stricter with what his friends do in his car. If the bottle of alcohol had already been opened then it was illegal for him to drive with it in his car - and if he had, and a cop had found it, he woulda been in some trouble. If I were him I'd watch my friends a little more carefully.

If I were the parents I would be more concerned with how a 19 year old got the booze in the first place. So now he has no car.... he still has access to booze and i am sure at 19 his other friends drive. So he doesnt drive off a bridge and kill himself... he is in the back seat while someone else drives off a bridge and kills everyone else. And what kind of booze was this anyways? a quart bottle of appleberry boons farm,,,or a half gallon of 151 rum.... i think that is a differance too.

Nappy's response to the parent's selling the kid's car is a perfect illustration of why he has never really amounted to anything and is still floating through life like a spoiled child. He doesn't believe in consequences for actions. He is of the opinion that people should just be allowed to slide when they break the rules or at most be given a mild punishment. Authority figures are wrong if they use their authority.
Nappy quit college. Nappy quit the air force. Nappy has quit job after job. There is no grownup responsibility in Nappy's life.
Sure, Nappy, the mean old parents were too harsh. They should have given him a slap on the wrist which is obviously what you were given when you screwed up. Forget the fact that the rules were clearly stated and that there were only two of them, the most important of which he broke.
If we had more parents like the mother who sold her son's car when he broke an important rule we would have fewer people who quit college, quit the air force and quit job after job. In short, we would have more responsible adults and fewer spoiled children.

The kid and mother had a contract. The kid broke it. End of story.
We're the parents of 5 and all drive except one and he's getting his learner's permit in a few months when he turns 16. The understanding is this, and this is how it was with the other kids whose cars we helped to buy:
Don't drink and drive. If you are drinking and need a ride, we will come get you at any time, at any place. No questions asked.
Kids drink. That cannot be avoided. But we can help do something about the drinking and driving.
Our own contract has worked out fine.

he's 19,old enough to know the consequences of drinking and driving and old enough to have a darn job and pay for his own car. If he doesn't like his parents rules when they bought him the car, then get a job,get your own car and move out.

I've read lots of books. I've read the open book that is you, too, Nappy.
You're 24 and you act like you're 14. Your entire outlook on life is a childish one of no responsibility.
Don't compare yourself with the few late starters, Nappy, compare yourself to the vast majority of grownups, a term that should include 24 year olds who have a purpose in life other than refusing responsibility.
The fact that you have quit every major undertaking you have attempted doesn't bode well for you being a late bloomer who will accomplish great things.

I couldn't agree more. Selling the car solves absolutely nothing, but creates more problems. Now the kid will only get pissed and try to retaliate by doing some other dumb shit. For starters you don't even know if that was his bottle. So overreacting like his mom is completely insane...

Let me get this straight, DracRomin, we shouldn't discipline our kids because they just might get pissed and retaliate by doing something stupid.
It doesn't matter if it was his bottle or not. The rule was no alcohol in the car. The other rule was, never leave the car unlocked. The kid broke both rules. He also went to the trouble of hiding the alcohol under the seat.

I never said kids should not be disciplined...I just think the mother overreacted. There is just a right way of doing it and a not so good way of doing it. The way she acted forces the kid to retaliate, and in such a way that he can hurt himself, by trying to prove to his mother that he has the upper hand. By taking away his car or forbidding him from doing some activities may have been a better route.

That's a really weird way to look at it... Must be a teenage male thing. When I break the rules and my parents punish me for it, I don't try to get the "upper hand". They are the parents, and they feed me and keep a roof over my head and pretty much buy me whatever I need/want (although I don't ask for much). The less mature, less smart ones need MORE discipline, if you ask me... :p
Selling his car is MORE severe than taking away his car or disallowing him to do things he enjoyed...makes no sense to me...selling the car solves absolutely nothing, but so be it.

Ok, I want to put my 2 cents in on this topic. I know my posting has dropped drastically here in the past month or two, but I still do browse around here once a day.
I think that what the mother did was justified in the fact that she punished her son for breaking a rule. And it wasn't a rule to be taken lightly either, I mean how many people die due to alcohol and cars? A hell of a lot. I do not however believe that she was justified in making a big scene of it, and then deciding to run the add for another week after the car was sold. That is not right.
The point is, the consequences of the sons actions were known to him before he did what he did, he broke the rule, and now he has to suffer through them.
I was raised in a strict but unrestrictive household. I know it sounds kinda funny but my parents always said to me, do whatever you want, just don't break the law, keep your grades up, and abide by our rules, our rules which are as lenient as your own actions allow. So basically I did whatever I wanted inside the law, never was a trouble maker, and my parents were always very lenient with the rules. However, when I did do something stupid, I got hell for it, absolute hell. I think it was a good tactic on their part.
As for Nappy, I agree with what Frogger and DF have said... you need to get your head out of your ass before it's too late.

My parents raised me much as yours raised you and I raised my kids the same way. They were expected to act as good, law abiding citizens but were given as much freedom AND RESPONSIBILITY as their age and maturity meant they could handle They had chores from the time they were toddlers; picking up their clothes, brushing their teeth, etc. when they were very young and progressively more difficult tasks as they got older. My wife and I did not check up on them to see if they were keeping their rooms clean or doing the other things they were expected to do. It was simply assumed that as family members they would do them.
All my kids turned out pretty good. They all got part time jobs at a young age, saved money, studied hard and are successful in wife. I am happy to say they are raising their kids the same way my parents raised me and my wife and I raised them.

Frogger

I won't be sorry. In fact I will be very happy for you if you become rich. Despite what you might think, I actually like you, Nappy. You are younger than any of my kids and I see you making the same mistakes some of their friends did.
You are obviously no dummy and it really annoys the hell out of me seeing you waste your talents and your life. If I didn't like you I wouldn't give a shit.

Fooly,
The nuclear family is not dead. It is alive and well. I know many families where the family all eat dinner together, the parents coach their children's sports activities or attend their games, vacations are taken together and the Ward Cleavers are in evidence. In fact, among my circle I see many more of those type families than the dysfunctional ones you read about in the newspapers.

These days some of the kids around 19 I see driving, think their Michael fucken Schumaker anyway :)
Our kids are too sheltered and dumb to even know who that is. On that note, American motor sports are totally fuckin' stupid. That said, our kids think they're Mario Andretti here. :)

No worries in Nascar then :D

The next time you make love to a woman will be the first time you make love to a woman, Nappy. I can spot a virgin a mile away. The only women in your life have been Mary Thumb and her four daughters.
What makes you think that? No one's a virgin at 24. That's impossible. You'd have to be the fattest, ugliest, loser on the planet for that to be the case. Either that, or a REALLY prudish woman, take your pick.

Exactly. It's so fucking embarrassing. :(
Europe kicks our ASS in that department, hands down. The only complaint I have with F1 is how the politics ALWAYS favor Ferrari.

Everyone should know who Michael Schumacher is, Paul. He's Rolf's big brother.
I can't stand NASCAR but I love Formula 1. I like the fact that it is the same drivers driving for the same companies. It gives a sense of continuity.
This year was especially exciting because the championship wasn't decided until the end. I usually don't care who wins just so it isn't Jacques Villeneuve.
I would even root for Sato ahead of Villeneuve.

What a first year eh.
I think maybe some bad luck at the last beat him from winning the Championship.
Villneuve always seemed an arrogant dick to me.

He's incredible. Too bad the Ferrari political machine (otherwise known as the FIA) fucked him over. Ron Dennis really sucked hind tit on that deal.

Yeah, its about time Ferrari got their wings clipped.
Their machines are so reactive their bad for the sport.
A Ferrari F1 steering wheel costs $30,000.

But no matter how hard I try, I just cant get into it.
