"I am coming at you. You will explode in a couple of minutes,"

I am sure the navy ship was shaking in thier boots at such a threat.

They should be. There's a very-real possibility this situation could take-on a life-of-its-own (http://www.fair.org/index.php?page=2261)!!!!!

(.....And, who'd be more-happy, about that, than General Georgie??!!! )

"One of the Navy pilots flying overhead that night was squadron commander James Stockdale, who gained fame later as a POW and then Ross Perot's vice presidential candidate. "I had the best seat in the house to watch that event," recalled Stockdale a few years ago, "and our destroyers were just shooting at phantom targets — there were no PT boats there.... There was nothing there but black water and American fire power."

If they were carrying a C802 they very well could have. Teh C802 sank an israeli corvette last summer.

It's about the iranians keeping the tension at a level that serves their interests.

Their interests?????

The last I heard, it was The Idiot Son that was talkin'-about preemptive-actions!

Rather anive to think that iran has no interests or objectives, or to think that an altercation wouldn't serve their interests. Even stupider if you beleive they're merely innocent bystanders, but that wouldn't surprise anyone.

Strange that such an event would occur on the eve of a visit to the ME to reassure our putative allies that the NIE notwithstanding we're still concerned about iran. No chance that Iran wouldn't want to send their own message.

Unless the Iranians are complete idiots, I'm pretty sure they DON'T want the U.S. military to come in and blast them all to smithereens.

why bother talking to shaman or freethinker? to them the world can do no wrong. and if they do, they are simply reacting to some evil we have commited.

If one were actually aware of events in iran they'd know that iran's hand is more like a pair showing but betting like they have a full house.

We know they have a crap economy, a shortage of gasoline (it's all imported), unrest in the cities and they've got a problem with the baluchis on the southeast provinces. Elections coming up and elements of the leadership have criticized ahdmidinejad.
They are completely dependent on the oil market to prop up the state and the economy atpit. If there is a recession in the US and Europe and demand drops they'll have a significant problem on their hands.
Far from holding a strong hand they're trying to bluff their way thru it. Some apparently are intimidated by it.

They've also got a population half-of-which is under 30-years-old.....and, a serious underground music-scene!! Presently, Iran is goin'-thru it's Sixties.

Ya' really wanna turn that segment (of their population) into hardcore-Nationalists....or, insurgents?

Precisely. Seems you're beginning to understand what iran's interests and agenda might be in such an affair.

Why does anyone bother responding to Shamin? He is a full blown America hater who has never, since he joined Allforums posted anything but negative comments with an anti-American slant.

He should be scraped off the soles of one's shoe rather than responded to.
