Poland bides time on decision to host shield
Sat Jan 5, 6:41 AM ET
WARSAW (Reuters) - Poland is in no rush to decide on hosting a U.S. anti-missile base before American elections as a change of guard at the White House could scuttle the project, Poland's foreign minister said on Saturday.
Warsaw has been in talks with Washington on plans to host ground-based interceptor missiles in Poland, part of a project to protect Europe against attacks from what the U.S. calls "rogue states" such as Iran and North Korea.
But negotiations have stalled since Donald Tusk took over as Poland's prime minister after his centre-right party took power last November.
"We're studying the platforms of all the most serious (U.S. presidential) candidates on this issue," Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski told Gazeta Wyborcza daily in an interview.
"The worst-case scenario would be one in which Poland agrees to the shield, shoulders the political costs and then the base isn't built because the government in the U.S. has changed," Sikorski added.
The United States is due to hold its presidential election in November. So far the shield has not turned into a major issue in the campaign.
Poland's larger neighbor Russia has opposed the project to place interceptors in Poland and a radar facility in the neighboring Czech Republic, which it sees as a threat to its security.
Warsaw-Moscow relations, never easy, reached rock bottom under the previous conservative government, and Poland's eagerness to host the shield was one of the points of contention.
The anti-missile base project is also unpopular among Polish citizens.
Tusk replaced former prime minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski who alongside his twin brother Lech was a strong supporter of the missile-defense project, seeing it as a guarantee of a deeper security alliance with the United States.
Tusk and Sikorski have said Poland would have to see clear security benefits before agreeing to host the facility.
Tusk and his Defense Minister Bogdan Klich are expected to visit Washington early this year to discuss the issue.

Didn't we get upset once a long time ago when the soviet union tried to put a missle base in a country near us? I seem to recall that being a big deal once... I think they even made a movie about it (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0146309/)...

I cant for the life of me see the point of putting this station in Poland, lets face it, it aint being put there for Polands benefit.
Theres no way its for tracking anything that would come outta the mid east.
The only thing it has done is piss off the Ruskies-so why bother.

Does it have to be if they let us??? Isn't it "their" country? If Russia has a problem with what we're doing, then they can simply deal with them like we did Cuba (not that Poland will mind all that much, but I digress...).

I can understand Poland wanting stronger ties to the west, especially the
United States, we all know, them and the Russkies dont mix too well.
Question: Isnt it time Washington scrapped all the Bullshit with Havana.
Comrade Fidel is on his last legs. Oddly enough, I think Cuba will need
US help more than ever in the coming years.

I was afraid that was gonna be your answer :(
As we discussed before, the United States economy depends a lot on
military related industry, ie, jobs, tax revenue, prestige, and to keep ahead
of the pack in weapons technology, so having said that, yeah your right.

Cmon-all you yanks love your Margaritas, I believe their home is Havana.
Drop the stupid sanction-that never worked.
Canada and EU are flying tourists in and out daily.
The only representatives to have to worry are the ones in Miami/Dade.
As for the Polaks, that move has hopefully been put on hold until a new
Administration is in place,Id say the Demo's will bin it.

I thought margaritas were Mexican...
EDIT: Yep, according to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margarita), the margarita originated in either Mexico or Texas (although only one of the many stories says Texas).

Well she's "alternative" because she has tons of tattoos and piercings. It's just they label they give to girls who aren't the same old bleach blond, fake tits, fake nails type of girl.
I wonder how my boyfriend would feel if I became an "alternative" porn star... Hmmm.... I hear the Suicide Girls get paid a lot, and they don't even have to have sex with anyone... :D

Oh, I get it now - I thought it centered on the fact that miss Pain tortures women by inserting a large squash into certain body cavities. You know, like lesbian only, S&M type shit, hence the "alternative" part.

then again we are talking about DF..... anything is possible.

But no, I don't exactly find punches in the face sexy... I think that those who do are taking it a little far. :p
