What a coincidence - I was going to post something about this, this morning....
Last night, I finally sat down and watched Jesus Camp, a documentary I recorded awhile back but never viewed.
This phrase "washed in the blood of Jesus" was used often. Yikes.
It was astounding. Revolting. Disgusting. Little children being brainwashed, intentionally terrified, indoctrinated into what I can only describe as a freakish and twisted religion.
I fear for these children. Their parents are sick with Jebus fever, and they are determined to make their children just as warped as they are. Equally disturbing, they're determined to turn our citizenry and our government into followers.
One of their great heroes is George W. Bush, to whom they kneel, pray, cry for, "put hands on" (a cardboard cutout of Bush), and trust beyond all reasoning. Through him, they believe they can "take back America for Christ." They shake and shimmy, rock back and forth, wave their hands in the air, speak in tongues (i.e. babble incoherently), "speak a blessing to him (Bush)," scream Jebus' name at the top of their voices... the only thing missing was the snakes.
Then along came one of their greatest preachers, the ex-Rev. Ted Haggerd, who assured his flock that homosexuality is B-A-D because the bible says it is. How ironic that less than two months after the release of the film, Haggard became embroiled in a high-profile scandal involving, among other things, homosexual prostitution and possession of methamphetamines. That may be the only saving grace of the whole pentacostal/evangelical nuttiness that has twisted so many people's thinking - if Rev. Ted is that much of a lying hypocrite, perhaps some in his flock will turn away from such a sick religion.
We can only hope.

You're preaching to the choir, Angelina.
I haven't seen it, Fran, but it has to kinda do with why I was asking. During a talk about god with my dad, he had mentioned being 'washed in jesus blood, eating of his body *some ritual with crackers* and went on to say he had done wrong raising me, and wished he'd have been saved *from what I'm not sure really* and had went to church when I was young.
I was thinking along the lines of you, more like WFT? about the blood thing, but the more I thought about it, I'm GLAD he didn't go to church when I was young. I'd be brainwashed like the kids that are going to it now.
I thought you just had to ask for forgiveness to get to heaven, this blood thing is odd.

Yeah, it is way too freaky when you see a 6 or 7 year old BORN AGAIN saying "Jesus died for my sins! - I am born again". The brain washing is just overboard.. i don't see how this doesn't qualify as a cult!
Amazing how they don't find the whole "jesus' blood" concept creepy and gross. Where is that in the bible - I'm sure its there - does not make it any less creepy!

I didn't watch this thing that people are talking about, so i'm just going off of what people are saying on here.
Why people think George Bush is some kind of religious symbol or leader I will never understand.
As for Jesus' blood, it varies on the religion. In the Old Testament, animal sacrifices were commonplace, thus the blood of an animal would supposedly wash the sinner clean. Then a new covenant was made with Jesus. Peter called him "The lamb of God", and so Jesus' blood washes away all of our sin.
The drinking of wine during communion signifies drinking the blood of Christ. Some think once the wine is blessed, it is partly transformed into blood. Others think of it as a mere representation.
I don't see what is so messed up about being "born again"... or saying "Jesus died for my sins"... both of those things could very well be true.
It sounds like the family in the picture was way overboard, those extremists do exist out there. But teaching your children your religion is not brainwashing... if it is, then ANYTHING you teach your child is brainwashing, and you just shouldn't teach him anything and let all the years of experience and methods passed down through generations go to waste. Great idea!

I agree with you on the blood of Jesus thing Decka, it shouldnt be frawned upon to say, Jesus died for my sins.
I have seen trailers for the Jesus camp thing. It's a bit freaky.
I teach my kid to be a kid. Those people were putting some heavy ideas into an 8 or 9 year olds head that full grown adults have trouble dealing with.
It might not have been brain washing but those kids are constantly going to be in conflict with making mommy and daddy happy.
Im pretty sure thats not what God meant by, Honor thy mother and father.

well I certainly feel sorry for those kids, and the parents. You should come to God on your own, not because mom and dad made you. I don't really have a problem with parents teaching kids christianity (well i'm a christian duh)... but the way described that was used leads one to presume that these kids could become stubborn, disrespectful, and hateful towards other religions and ethnic groups. THAT is the wrong here.
