Learning how to eat a steak with intellectual sizzle

In grades K-12 we have had teachers take us by the hand and introduce us to new domains of knowledge in slow incremental steps. The teacher takes us only to that part of knowledge that our minds were prepared to comprehend. The teacher cuts our intellectual food into bite size portions for easy digestion.

If we go to college we find that our class scheduling catalog details for us what are the prerequisites of any course in which we might wish to enroll. If we do not have the proper preparation then we cannot enroll in that course. The catalogue prevents us from attempting knowledge for which we are unprepared.

Our educational system has protected us from attempting to learn that for which we were unprepared. We have grown in knowledge under this umbrella of protection; however, we are left unprepared for the task of independent learning. Our educational system has left us without the intellectual dental structure required for independent learning.

After our educational system is finished with us we must, on our own, learn how to become independent learners; the first thing we must recognize is that we must not reject an idea because it is not easily digested. When we are not taken by the hand and incrementally introduced we will often meet ideas for which we are not prepared to deal. If we reject every idea about which we are not prepared to learn we will never learn anything new after our school daze are over.

If our response to everything unique to us is “I do not comprehend it so I will reject it” we will never be able to learn new stuff.

Our mothers and our teachers have been cutting our intellectual food into bite size portions throughout our young life.

If we reject a juice steak in the future because it is not cut to bite size we will be eating nothing but that which can be swallowed whole for the rest of our life.

Do you think that your education has left you intellectually toothless?

First Mother Fly: How's the new baby?

Second Mother Fly: Very restless. I had to walk the ceiling with him all night.

Interesting point you make...
I just went back to school at the age of 30 to get a degree, I do in no way feel we get any prepared chunk sized pieces, it is more like a bucket of stuff thrown at us with the comment "There you go, now figure this out" :)

Independent thought was never teachable in the first place. People either do it or they don't.

The problem is Coberst is that I have to agree with you with what you said above :) !

I am not sure that your topic fits into the "Religion and Philosophy Formum" :) but things are a slow day anyway :) And I am personally glad that you are still here.

Love you!

What do you mean Napster :) "Last post you win!" I don't think so :)

By the way Napster my friend, "Independent Thought", is teachable. It is just that "money and power" would rather that one was not an "independent thinker".

Napster teaching "independed thinking" :) Life gets exciting quick :) !

Just so that there is no confusion here Napster, you do set an example here on this messageboard as an "independent" thinker. And that is honest.

Love you!

:) yah me too!

Love you Dark!

Old tuck, drifting toward veges :)

It should be said (and I am off topic abit :) ) if we all were all vegetarians, cows/beef would become an endangered species and only be found in Zoos :)

The folks that want to save the Buffaloes are trying to get us to consider them a food source. And in the wild (Mother Nature), the slow and old would be torn apart by wolves :) The Jews are not wrong about promoting gentle/humane (Kosher) kill.

May we all be so lucky :)

I love everybody!

tuck

PS: Mother nature ain't nice. At all. And this should be said, "At least some of us Humans have the ability to be sensitive and a bunch of us are! Even though we are sensitive and would like to to stay meat eaters :) ."

i had a ribeye last saturday, it was good:D

Why ?
Why was it good.? And why a Ribeye.?
I got a Fed X delievery of Omaha Steaks for the Holidays.
8 small Filet Mignon. And 8 small Pork tenderloin.
It was a big disappointment.
They claim Prime Meat.
But apparently they were frozen TOO long.
They were beautifully shrink wrapped. But even with careful
Dethawing,they had little meat juices.
Once a nice steak loses it's Juices, they CANNOT be too tasty.
They'll have taste but not that wonderful Juicy taste of meat
cooked proper and retaining the juices.
Most folk have no idea'r how to properly cook a nice steak.
I can cook a Nice Rib pork chop { that requires carefull picking out
at the butcher's } to be Juicy.
And I'm talking a Grill.
It's technique.

I'm not sure if i agree with the post... Anything you do is a step process. You take it a day at a time. I needed a religion class, and I wasn't allowed to take "studying the bible" until I took "Intro to world religions"... which was fine by me. I learned a ton about Taoism, Confusionism, Islam, and Hindu religions. You could say that the college is promoting being a "freethinker" by not allowing someone to just stick with the bible, but treat religion as a buffet, and at least have a taste of them all. I like that process.

I took a Bible class first (although it was "The Bible As Literature"), and then the World Religions class. Both very interesting by the way. :)

Yea, the bible is an amazing piece of literature, even if you don't believe in the religion.

Definitely, although the Hindu Vedas definitely give it a run for its money.

They make GREAT literature. Almost as good as my old favorites, the Greek myths.
