I admit, during my reads, I rarely paid that much attention to Canada's history. So I was a bit surprised recently when I learned of the sneaky lawmaking practices of the 1920's Canadian government.
Much to my surprise Canada went dry themselves a few years earlier. However when America got on the "wagon" the Canadians saw an opportunity. Quickly passing a law for breweries and distilleries to be legal as long as the end product was stictly for export only. As long as none of the product was sold in Canada these places could make as much booze as they wanted.
Gee during prohibition anyone care to guess where one of the main, if not the main, sources of whiskey and booze came from? Hmmmm?
Gotta watch those Canadians, they're sneaky. :slap:

Wow your love and knowledge of Canada is compelling...
"""While the manufacture, sale, and transport of alcohol was illegal in the U.S., it was not illegal in surrounding countries. Distilleries and breweries in Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean flourished as their products were either consumed by visiting Americans or illegally imported to the U.S."""

Yes Canada may have supplied the US but how many back woods distilleries were going on and bath tub breweries... So get off the Canada is a sneaky group kick...
Don't tell me if the shoe was on the other foot the US wouldn't milk it for all it's worth.. You can be so bias...

I'm pretty sure he knows that. I don't think he was saying that it was a bad thing for Canada to do that anyways.

I suppose it's a matter of perspective... i don't see anything wrong with that statement. For one thing, he's probably joking, and for another thing I just don't consider "sneaky" a bad thing.

Again if it is a joke and a funny then he will clear it up and no harm no foul..
Don't see what the deal is with you being defensive for him.. If it is a joke then so be it..
Given some context sneaky is a bad thing but again my opinion also..
Mikey: bite me eh!!! lol

I went this year on the Gananoque Boat Line tour and saw Boldt Castle. On the trip the announcements talked about these day's and how smuggler would cut there cargo and flee border patrols. These bottle of whiskey I guess are highly prized among these privately owned islands and users of the water.
Before I thought it was illegally made in Canada but that may be different.
I'll check it out unless someone already has a link.

O.k. I didn't meant to piss anyone off. I just thought it was pretty shrewd personally. Sorry. Jeez.

my great grandfather, grandfather, great uncles, and some other relatives were doing the moonshine thing back in the '20's. my grandfather got busted transporting. he didn't squeel, and spent 6 months in the pen. and the rest of the family made sure his new wife and oldest child were taken care of while he was in.when he got out shortly afterward prohibition was repealed. he saved enough money to buy 80 acres of land, built a log cabin, raised much of their own food on it, and raised a family.

Cool like I said to DF no harm no foul.. Some words just come across in a way that I was not sure if you were attacking Canadians or if you as you say thought it was a shrewd business move.. It is some times hard to read a post and know that it is humorous or serious. Thanks for clearing that up..
When I hear the word sneaky used it implies deceit...and that is a trigger word for me.. sorry. Thanks for clearing that up.

We laugh cause we always win :)
But seriously, we mostly just smile, cause the swedish media does that all the time.

Angelina,
Residents of Canada (America's Hat) are touchy when it comes to any kind of perceived criticism by the United States.
If I didn't know better I would think they had an inferiority complex.:)

I'm not mad at you, Pendragon. I just have no use for Mr. Shaman. In my opinion he is worthless as a poster.

The Volstead Act is the popular name for the National Prohibition Act

This Act was infact an attempt to stop Irish immigration to the United States.
It failed only because Irish migrants drove the stuff across from Canada.
Lets face it-who would wanna live in a country with no booze.
