Chalk River was close down because it had no electrical back up systems, the nuclear plant where US/Canadian scientist study isotopes also supplies 1/2 the worlds medical isotopes

Because of demand this plant is being restarted with out a power back up system.

I heard my comment on the news last night but today I'm not seeing the real reason.

i can understand how a shortage of nuclear meds will endanger the health of tens of thousands of Canadians, but WTF is a meltdown going to do?

go to Home Depot, get a couple of stand by generators and call it good! it's not rocket science:rolleyes:

I think the nuclear cloud would land on the US aswell.

But the federal government bypassed the regulatory body's order by fast-tracking an emergency bill allowing AECL to restart the reactor for 120 days.

Chalk River has had to be shut down in the past...at least this time they didn't "spill" anything .

The laboratories at Chalk River first opened in 1944 to assist the U.S. nuclear bomb program. A number of nuclear reactors have been built on the same site over the years.

In 1945, the site's first reactor became the only nuclear facility outside the U.S. But the achievement was marred in 1952 when a sudden surge of power caused a partial meltdown. No one died in what was to become known as the world's first nuclear accident but the contamination set an ominous precedent.

Six years later, in 1958, there was another accident when a uranium fuel rod ruptured in the reactor core.

Seems a bit irresponsible to start this thing going-without backup!!

it's a small reactor and i'm upwind. i'm a wee concerned, but i'm not going to lose any sleep over it unless they leave it running when they go home.

mikezilla doesn't mind. he likes his wildlife to glow and hopes to have kids with 4 arms so he can subcontract them out for assembly line work.

Here's the actual start time and some exerts from the news

The Crown corporation said its National Research Universal (http://search.live.com/results.aspx?FORM=CSNEW2&setlang=en-CA&q=National%20Research%20Universal&mkt=en-CA) reactor in Chalk River (http://search.live.com/results.aspx?FORM=CSNEW2&setlang=en-CA&q=Chalk%20River&mkt=en-CA) started up at 3:44 a.m. ET Sunday

The Chalk River facility produces about two-thirds of the world's supply of radioisotopes - nuclear material essential for medical imaging and diagnostic scans for fractures, cancers and heart conditions.

New supplies of medical isotopes will be ready for distribution within days to ease a worldwide shortage, the Atomic Energy of Canada says.
