I did not know if I should post this in the movies, books or religion threads. Anyway, I just finished reading the first book in the series and all this supposed "controversy" over whether the books are "Anti-Religion". From what I understand they get more deeply into that topic in the 2nd and 3rd books, but in the first book at least the overtone is not anti-religious, but rather anti-dogma. It seems that his point is not to bash religion but to promote children and adults thinking for themselves instead of simply accepting whatever a dogmatic institution tells you is the truth.
It was a good read and I look forward to seeing the movie.

Sounds like my kind of book :)
Thinking for yourself is way underrated these days...

I don't see why there was controversy about it at all. It's just a fantasy story and anyone that knows the difference between fiction and reality should be able to understand that. The story has nothing to do with this reality.

You, my friend, need to be introduced to the wonderful wide world of postmodernism.

While it is true that everyone has their own understanding of reality there is no reason to get worked up over a story like this.
I guess that I just don't understand how things like this become so controversial. It just seems silly to me to get worked up over a book like this. I realize that their are religious fanatics that will get upset over it but I just can't understand why. No one is forcing them to read it and it's not like it is a new religion that is wishing harm on people of their religion. If the book specifically tried to teach kids that they need to kill people if they follow a religion I could understand how it could be a problem; however, if that were the case then it would be the responsibility of adults to not give it to their kids. If their kids are not going to stay Christians over a book then there is a good chance they wouldn't have remained Christian in the first place. It's just not worth all the trouble. Don't people have better and more important things to worry about other than complain about a book because they don't think it agrees with their religious beliefs? It just sounds like a big waste of time to me.
