View Full Version : whats wrong with marine parks?

the marine park industry has been selling, catching and trading marine mammals for years.but for wat?education?have you ever been to a marine park and seen a dolphin show?how much of that show is education?though sea world is a breeding program, there are still parks that may not catch the animals themselves, but import them just the same.all dolphins and whales have been proven to have a sense of self.thats something that only primates have been known to show.dolphins are extremely intelligent and have strong family bonds.during capture, families are seperated.wat does this say about us as a species?that we think its ok to put a creature like that in a box for our entertainment.its biologically unhealthy for them and very stressful.look at it from their point of view and realize YOU GET TO GO HOME AT NIGHT,THEY DONT.

so,the Marine Parks should just let all these animals back into the wild so they can find their sense of self again?
Do you have any idea what would happen if they did? A good portion if not all of them would die. They would have no "family" to return to and have become used to and dependent upon humans to feed them therefore they don't know or remember how to hunt their own food. Not to mention having been sheltered from their natural prey the animals wouldn't know how to defend themselves in a dangerous situation. While not everyone is going to agree and I personally don't care,I say leave it alone and quit bitching about whether it's "educational" or not. Of course it's not,it's a THEME PARK it's meant for fun.

Ok, I wasn't gonna post today but this topic is an absolute must.
Michelle, you say it's meant for FUN, but do you realize how competely selfish that is?
Sure, It's 'fun' for ignorant humans, but it certainly isn't FUN for the captive animals that were taken from their natural environment, separated from their families and held in a cement pool against their will.
It's the same as you being put in JAIL for the rest of your life, away from your loved ones and being gawked at all day long, is that would you would call fun?
Good grief, this topic touches a very strong nerve with me and I've done many protests against zoos, marine parks, rodeos and factory farms and I don't regret it at all.
<<<so,the Marine Parks should just let all these animals back into the wild so they can find their sense of self again?>>>
You are missing the point completely. How about... NOT CAPTURING THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE AND PUTTING THEM ON DISPLAY AND MAKE THEM DO STUPID TRICKS FOR THE LOWLY FUKKING HUMANS THAT GET OFF ON SUCH ANIMAL CRUELTY?
I cannot even fathom how some people think... or don't think.
Michelle, I'm sorry for BITCHING but yer post made me very upset.

Scummy.......I haven't been to a theme park in 12 years......I have no desire to go to one. I do understand what you are saying about them being put on display and everything. I don't condone it in any way. Yes,there shouldn't be anymore animals captured for humans fun,but the sad fact is,it does happen and will continue to happen because most people don't see this the way you do,they only see dollar signs.
I just think that once an animal has been in captivity for a long time and letting it go suddenly is doing the animal more harm than good. We're not going to agree on this completely or maybe not at all and that doesn't bother me nor do I think your bitching at me. You hold very strong beliefs on this subject as do I and all I can do is respect those as I would hope you respect mine.

Wow Michelle. You are truly a very understanding person and I thank you for that. I was at another site just now tryig to steal, I mean download some music and I felt bad about how I lashed out at you.
Believe it or not, it wasn't actually YOU I was lashing out at, it was the uncaring mentality you conveyed..... no wait, that doesn't sound good. Lemme try again.
I think you are a very nice lady and I enjoy talking to you but some of the things you said, I may have taken too deeply. I know yer a caring person and I'm glad you don't condone such atrocities as putting animals on display for 'our' amusement.
<<<I just think that once an animal has been in captivity for a long time and letting it go suddenly is doing the animal more harm than good.>>>
Yes, that is most likely the case but it sure burns my ass that they keep capturing aquatic animals and taking their natural lives away from them forever. And monkeys, and birds, and tigers, and snakes... the list goes on.
Anyway, I'm glad you aren't mad at me. I can be a pistol sometimes but I meant you no harm and I'm relieved you are so understanding :) :)

Golly, thanks Michelle. I feel the urge to giggle :)
And hell yes, it would be horrible if we all had the same thoughts and opinions at all times. It would be like Twilight Zone and that makes me shudder.
Anyway, had a long day (long week, actually) and I'm gonna log offa this thing now and hit the mattress and hopefully sleep sleep sleeeeeeeeeeep.

Damn. I thought we were gearing up for a cat fight. Guess I ought to cancel that truckload of jello.
On a more sobering note, I would worry too much about animals returned to the wild from captivity. Unless they've had their instincts bred out of them over several generations, they still have the wherewithall to survive in the wild again. If they become lunch for another species, then thats what nature intended for them. Where I have an issue is when animals are released to an area not indiginous to them, and the balance is spoiled because of that.
On another note, I might remind little miss Scummy Greenikins that she's going to bed with materials made from plats that were murdered to make her life more comfortable, or that she's sleeping on a mattress made from a toxic mix of Toluene Diisocyanate and Polyol, or driving a car made from DiPhenylmethane Diisocyanate. I say we kill all the animals, kill all the plants, then kill ourselves with chemicals. Thats true environmental balance.
can I re-order the jello now?

Don’t cancel that truckload of Jello just yet. I may hafta dump it on you, silly boy.
I agree with your first paragraph but in the 2nd paragraph, you don’t really know what type of sleeping materials I use. Do you know there’s an organization that sells 100% organic bedding? Everything from mattresses to sheets, to blankest to pillows and pillow cases. There are no chemicals in their goods, you doof. The sad thing is, I don’t own such wunnerful stuff cuz the are rather pricey and I’m, well….kind of cheap. :p
But I do sleep on a Futon made from who knows and a rubber blow up mattress that is very comfy but I don’t think any rubber trees were killed to make that bed. It’s synthetic and I’m sure it isn’t the best thing to be breathing all night but I only sleep on it sometimes.
<<< I might remind miss Scummy Greenikins that she's going to bed with materials made from plats that were murdered to make her life more comfortable>>>
I think you mean ‘plants’, not “plats”, yes? No plants were murdered to make me more comfortable unless they do kill cotton plants while making cotton goods. I don’t know if they do or if the plant is left to grow more cotton (????) but honestly, I would not stop buying cotton if the plant is killed during harvest, but I’m sure gonna look further into buying organic cotton goods.
I eat organic so why not wear organic???
And if yer one of those types who say it’s just as bad to eat a tomato or an apple than it is to eat a cow or a pig because BOTH are murdered…. Have a seat.

I agree. As well as not needing to survive on meat in general,we certainly do not need to prey on the more intelligent beings in this world.especially ones who are more like us than most ppl know.i mean these dolphins have been places no human being has ever ventured.out in the open ocean, where no ship has dared to go.they are truely amazing.i have always been fascinated by the ocean and its alien-like creatures.

Yup. And it has been written in history that dolphins, many times, lead ships safely thru some very rugged terrain and the ships would not have made it without the help of the dolphins.
Very wonderful animals they are and deserve to be treated with proper respect.
The same goes for whales and ALL aquatic beings, sharks included.

Please Help a Lone Killer Whale! Her name is Lolita (aka Tokitae) and she was captured from the wild over thirty years ago. Since then she has been living in a tank so small she can barely turn around!!! She has no other orcas to interact with (her mate killed himself in 1980) and has been living in the same tiny tank and doing shows for almost her entire life!!! This is clearly inhumane and sickening!!! Take a look.

Nootka 5 died January 15th, 2008.
She was 27 years old...
Probably could've lived a lot longer had she have been in the wild.
Captured from her family in Iceland in October 1981.
Lived at Marineland Ontario until her death...
She had a lot of calves, but none of them are alive today.
She was thought to have been depressed... and often moped around.
Nootka may have been related to Keiko AKA Free Willy.

I wasn't talking about them being beaten with sticks. I was talking about taking from their natural habitat and enslaving them to do lame tricks all day long so they can get some rotten fish to eat. If they won't do a trick, they don't eat.
I'd call that extremely abusive with no beatings (I hope) involved.

Lolita is now only performing ONE show a day, rather than the two she had been doing the past 30+ years... and the Miami Seaquarium official website has almost completely removed Lolita from it - replacing her with ads to swim with the dolphins.
And according to King-5 News, a new campaign for Lolita's release/move will kick off next weekend! It has been hinted that Johnny Depp, 50 Cent, Harrison Ford, and other big celebrities will be involved!
