View Full Version : Crap like this is why I'm voting for Ron Paul

The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday overwhelmingly approved a bill saying that anyone offering an open Wi-Fi connection to the public must report illegal images including "obscene" cartoons and drawings--or face fines of up to $300,000.

That broad definition would cover individuals, coffee shops, libraries, hotels, and even some government agencies that provide Wi-Fi. It also sweeps in social-networking sites, domain name registrars, Internet service providers, and e-mail service providers such as Hotmail and Gmail, and it may require that the complete contents of the user's account be retained for subsequent police inspection.

Before the House vote, which was a lopsided 409 to 2, Rep. Nick Lampson (D-Texas) held a press conference on Capitol Hill with John Walsh, the host of America's Most Wanted and Ernie Allen, head of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

...

Not one Democrat opposed the SAFE Act. Two Republicans did: Rep. Ron Paul, the libertarian-leaning presidential candidate from Texas, and Rep. Paul Broun from Georgia.

it's completely relevant, that's what the SAFE Act is for...tracking kiddie porn, not hanging perverts...yet.

No, the SAFE Act is about political grandstanding in a way that does nothing to actually stop kiddie porn yet creates an undue burden on YOU. This burden is on you, me, and small businesses. How on Earth could anyone be in favor of it, unless they're simply not paying attention?

Obscene cartons and drawings-is a very broad view of things.

And the majority of 407 is massive.

Is there more to this Borg-or is it a knee jerk reaction to something that may have happened?

Bit hypocritical then-if they want to create an illusion of how things really are.

Boy won't businesses have a fun time trying to control this one. I wonder what they're definition of "offensive" is. I sense a backlash of several frivolous accusations because of this.

Just on a side note: I have no idea whom I would vote for and don't really care at this point, but this Ron Paul guy you speak of is starting to impress me.

Doesn't matter if you do or not. If you have a Wi Fi connection of any sort at home, or own a business that has one, you are now required by law to keep an archive of all traffic that flows through it, according to this act. If you believe the only people who should be concerned about this are pedophiles, you suffer from extreme myopia.

99% of the people who have Wi-fi didnt even set it up themselves, how are they supposed to know how to archive data flowing through it?

Ask the 400-odd Congressmen who voted for it.

Kind of a silly reason to vote for someone.
But Louisville Congresswoman Ann Northup { a Bush favorite} lost
a close Election to local Liberal Newspaper man John Yarmuth
who ran on such progressive measures as Lowering the drinking age
and legalizing Pot.Louisville is a rather refined, unassuming Party town.
So,even an accomplished and solid Pol,like Northup {who Bush
helped campaign for } is beatable.
I hope Louisville doesn't think that Minority leader and distinguished
Gentleman Mitch McConnell { his wife is Sec.rt of Labor} is also
beatable.Because that means Politics STINKS.
Where wood this Country be,if the Likes of certain Unbeatables like
Ted Kennedy,Pat Leahy or Charles Rangel could be easily kicked aside.

Glad to see that Congress is one again tackling the "hard" issues (and setting laws into place that will only burden our legal system more).

Maybe I should archive my septic tank deposits... seems that that's what this current bunch of dweebs in Congress are really concerned about... useless, convoluted shit.

being myopic helps seeing the details. you're not distracted by the wild fantasies of youth:thumbs:
open Wi-Fi connection to the public

secure your connection, then it's not your problem.:woohoo:

Do you think Grammy and Grampy know how to do that? Moreover, do you think they know it's required by law for them to do that?

if they can set up the connection, they can secure it. the Feds would be doing them a favor.

btw-it could be argued that a home (or business if intended for employee use)WiFi connection isn't offering to the public.
