Careful what you pick up in the subway -- it could lead to your arrest.

Straphanger Carlos Alayo said he learned that lesson when he picked up what he thought was a derelict wallet laying on a subway platform bench.

He said he intended to find its owner and return it, but as he went to get on the G train, he said he was stopped by police.

So if you ever visit NYC, be warned. Trying to find the owner of a lost wallet is now a crime, according to the NYPD.

(Incidentally, what's a straphanger?)

At least the NYPD seemed to accept his story, since he was neither detained nor charged.
I assume a straphanger is someone that, when riding a train or bus, is forced to stand and hang onto the ceiling straps that are provided for safety reasons.

It only takes one or two bad experiences to do that, Trav. The first time one of 'em treats you like a fucking criminal for asking a question in a civil tone is usually all it takes to validate someone's inherent mistrust of the "good guys". Rest assured, those people are NOT your friends.

"The New York Civil Liberties Union said the decoy tactic could deter people from being good Samaritans and should be abandoned."

well duh....if people are afraid they might get arrested for finding and trying to turn in someone's purse, wallet, etc who the heck is going to even try?
Except for those who aren't as honest and would keep it.
