Finland and South Korea remain among the superpowers of education, according to a major International Study.

The three yearly Programme for International Student Assessment (Pisa)
shows that the two countries are in the top five for reading and maths.

South Korea has made rapid progress since 2000,says the report-with its
pupils improving by the equivalent of a whole school year.

The rankings are based on tests taken by 15yo in 57 countries.

Maybe if we thorw anther 5 billion at it we can crack the top 50.

maybe our education money would be better spent offering financial incentives to parents of kids who do well in school. Education really happens at home anyway, as no matter how much money a school has per kid if the parents don't give a rats eyelash the kid won't do well.

SO why not take some money from the bloated, corrupt education department and tell parents "look, if your kid does well in school you will get X amount of money from us as a reward". I bet grades woulr rise sharply.

Sounds like a good idea to me!

Corrupt? Do tell.

Do you think that would be a financial reward or a bribe.

Surely Parental Responsibility is part of being a parent,

but I know what your saying-here some kids roam the streets in packs like

wolves-parents couldnt give a fuck about em.

Depends on who proposes it and who you ask, I am sure if a republican proposed it and you asked a democrat he would say it was a bribe, and vice versa.

I don't think it matters what it was called, if it got results we should do it. Seriously, the money we are pouring into the bottomless pit of education with piss poor results is outrageous. IF you took a fraction of that money and offered it to families as a reward for their young students good performance I guarantee you grades would go up. Incentive is the American way. Once we left the mind set of working for incentive and goal and moved into the land on entitlements and everything becoming a right the government should hand you on a silver platter it all went down hill.

QUESTION: Do you think the way higher education is paid for needs changed

to incorporate more American kids?

It is very expensive. I have no idea why. I am certain it does not have to be as expensive as it is so I would bet there is some serious waste going on. So yes, it should be overhauled. Besides ,"higher education" usually amounts to brain washing of our kids by left wing radical faculty members. Some of the most intolerant places there are in the USA are on college campuses

I suppose it's true that of the faculty members who do hint at their political leanings, I have had more liberal seeming teachers than conservative seeming. But most of my professors give no clue of their opinions on politics.

Cmon Trav-thats saying education is being politicised.

Maybe the education system needs a bit of a socialist shove-to get more
kids into college.

Here if a kid does well enough at school they can apply to go to university.

If accepted by a uni-the government will give them a loan-which dosent need
paid until they graduate and are earning over $30,000 a year.

This allows kids from some very deprived areas to get the type of education
which otherwise would be out of their league.

There are federal grants, discounts, and scholarships galore for those who look for them. And there are community colleges, like the one I go to, which can offer a very good education for the first two years of college at huge discounts. Then you're basically guaranteed acceptance to a 4 year university to do your last two years, if you do well enough. Many universities offer discounts and transfer scholarships for students coming from community colleges. However, with today's abysmal high school drop out rate, it's no wonder kids are discouraged by the thought of having to do four more years of school in order to succeed at anything, and I think a lot of people just give up.

Well Finland leads the field in mobile (cell ) fone tecnology-Nokia.

That said,South Korea is typical of any far east nation, they invent nothing,

but are the best at taken other nations technology and rebranding it as their on, its whats made Japan so rich also.

i completely forgot about Nokia! maybe because i'm fond of Motorola products?

wasn't that joker that wrecked his own Enzo in CA, then got popped for stealing the car (he'd leased it in England) tied up in cell phones?

Hahhaa, interesting idea there. Parent teacher conferences would be a whole new ballgame!

"You give my kid an A or I will fucking sue your ass!"

Travh20

What? Why would they sue the teacher? Nothing would change except some incentive to do well, because obvioulsy there is no incentive for a lot of parents to spend time helping their kids do well in school.

It makes sense, the more educated people are the more liberal-minded they become.

That may be true, to bad we can't all live our entire lives on a college campus. One day those highly educated liberals go out into the real world and wind up conservatives.

Parents would be beating their kids (if not doing well) to get that "incentive" money so they can go get today's crack dose!!! Dumb idea.

this is a truly sad fact Trav

Mesk...that's a bit dramatic saying parents would be beating their child just to get drugs....couldn't you come up with a better way of phrasing that?
Believe it or not,the majority of parents do give a damn what their children are doing, too bad those aren't the ones in the news instead. But then again, the good parents don't bring in the news or high ratings:rolleyes:

Why is it that liberals have to base all of their decisions on what the lowest common denominator of society might do? One kid 10,000 may have a parent beat them for not getting good grades so it is a dumb idea? Of course the kid is probably getting beaten anyways, but what do you care? If you can assign a reason for those beatings to a conservative idea it helps your argument that conservatives are bad people.

Sorry, If you think this will cause parents to START beating their kids, well you are just a dumb ass.

In Norway all education at all levels is free (except for private schools where you may have to pay a small portion). In addition everyone gets grants and interest free loans that you have to start paying back when you start working. After a master degree you'd typically owe something like $30-40k which compared to a years income with a master degree isn't much at all.
