I had an interesting debate on this in my Deviance class, I'm curious to see what everyone else thinks.

It's officially defined as one.

This quote from Wikipedia is interesting:
Classifying a condition as a disease is a social act of valuation, and may change the social status of the person with the condition (the patient). Some conditions (known as culture-bound syndromes) are only recognized as diseases within a particular culture. Sometimes the categorizaton of a condition as a disease is controversial within the culture.
A disease is whatever we want it to be!

Hmmmm, I'm more curious about what the heck one learns in a Deviance class???
Sounds pretty deviant, if ya ask me!

I voted yes. We have almost no power over true addictions; they are at least very like diseases.

That's a class I'd like to take. I could learn the teacher a thing or three.

Surprisingly it's a common branch in Sociology. Almost all universities offer an introductory class in their Sociology department on Deviance. And it's a requirement for majors I think.

Ooooh, we're just a tad bit sensitive about our library books, aren't we?

That's okay dear. Just return them, and it will all be better! See, don't you feel better already?

Not really. I feel my world is caving in on me and it makes me sick in the gut.

Alcoholism is a disease for some, and a sport for others.
I have always found it to be more like a hobby.
The longer you stick with it, the better you get at it.
Practice does make perfect, this I can report.

Ahh, true, true. Next time I'm on a beach somewhere, bemoaning the lack of proper drinks, I won't turn down rum!

If you can think of something deviant, we've probably covered it. Sex, drugs, crime...it's a really interesting class.
Other than the severity of the drug and and social acceptability, what's the difference between a heroin addict and an alcoholic? It reminds me of the Mitch Hedberg joke, "Alcoholism is the only disease that you can be yelled at for having."

Once a person becomes an alcoholic, they have a condition and not a disease.
