CARACAS, Venezuela - Humbled by his first electoral defeat ever, President Hugo Chavez said Monday he may have been too ambitious in asking voters to let him stand indefinitely for re-election and endorse a huge leap to a socialist state.

"I understand and accept that the proposal I made was quite profound and intense," he said after voters narrowly rejected the sweeping constitutional reforms by 51 percent to 49 percent.

Opposition activists were ecstatic as the results were announced shortly after midnight — with 88 percent of the vote counted, the trend was declared irreversible by elections council chief Tibisay Lucena.

as i said, let venezuela solve its own problems. even if chavez has a temper tantrum and strikes back with the military.

Congrats to the people who voted agaisnt Chavez. But also, congrats to Chavez for not instantly accusing the victors of cheating simply because he didnt win, a lesson a lot of american politicians with a D after their name could stand to learn from.
I would like to say maybe I was wrong about Chavez, but I still think he will never leave office until he dies. I still think he is going to somehow persuade enough people to vote him dictator for life somehow.
