Stop doing it. Threadjacking posts will be deleted. If you don't like a thread, ignore it. If you have complaint about someone's post, report it to a mod.

Sure...don't post anything you think might be taken as thread-jacking. :)
How about...deliberately posting an off-topic response for the apparent purpose of destroying a thread.
Understand that it'll be up to the mods to determine if a post is thread-jacking or not, and that decision will be necessarily a matter of opinion.

If its 'done on purpose' sure.
At this time, some of the animals are trying to takeover the zoo.
All thats gonna happen is-the mods are gonna step in and take severe action.

ok, so drifting off topic isn't so bad, and commenting the merit of a topic or post isn't advised, but trying to change the subject is completely out bounds?

Ya know Mike-ya gotta ask yourself,
which is the most dangerous here?
One or two posters who continually bash the one theme,
or a group of posters getting together and undermining the moderators authority.
From yesterday-I thought there would be trouble over this.
The mods here are pretty flexable-but they do draw the line.
Napsterbater

I'm not opposed to it as a measure to quiet things down, but I think making it a permanent rule would cause many people to flip, because it's hard to draw the line between something going off-topic, and a legitimate thread-jack.

i've been ranting for guidelines for sometime. i don't really care what the rules are, i just want to know what they are so i can follow them. releing on peer pressure doesn't always work, but that's the way Drew seems to want it.
you may or may not know this, but this is not the 1st campaign to shun a poster....not that i remember the details of any of the involved parties except this is the 1st one that's been out in the open.

Your right its not the first time-but the point is,
that its dangerous ground to tread.
What if someone else say an 'active poster' starts a couple of threads
others dont like-do they get together to hound that person out,
where does it end.
As for rules-I think its more common sense.
If ya were in a bar and had an arguement with someone-youd know where to draw the line,or when its gonna turn nasty-no different here.
Tolerance and respect for your fellow posters is all thats required.
If a buddy cant defend themselves in debate-they shouldnt be here.

I truly, honestly don't mind if there are no stated rules, and that the mods are perfectly free to decide what's acceptable and what's not, using their own discretion. The warning then ban system works. It works better than the "never ban because we're afraid how people will take it," system. People will come and go. I don't think anyone's going to take this little episode and use it as sole basis for fleeing AFN like a rabbit. Sometimes people have been thinking for some time of going, and something like this might just make the final decision for them. Sure, we like having people post here, but in my opinion, I would like it if we had the best aspects of people posting. If life drags a person another way, we shouldn't try to break our backs trying to keep every single person. It's very likely we'll see OldPhart, Evil Homer, and any others here again, because those two made friends here that keep them connected to the forum.
DarkFantasy96
11-28-2007, 04:01 PM
I think there should be rules so there are no conflicts when people are banned. Even if they are warned beforehand, many people argue that it is unwarranted in some cases anyways. I mean, if there are rules put up, no one is going to make you read them, so what's wrong with it?
Napsterbater
11-28-2007, 04:13 PM
The problem is, people will always try to undermine the rules and still alter the spirit of the boards to suit their own purposes. I did a hell of a lot of that when I first started posting. I wanted to know the rules, and I kept clamoring for clear ones, if only so I could toe the line as best I could and still get away with it. I like having mods with balls that don't have to run their decisions through a ton of rule filters just to get something accomplished. Sure, people will bitch, but the people who really like posting here, and take the time to get to know the community, will always be there to defend the mods. Or to criticize the mods. It's a nice system. I just think we need to work out the kinks. The mods waited way too long to fix the shaman problem. Now we're dealing with the backlash. Sure it sucks, but it's a learning process.

It's not going through a "ton of rule filters". It's helping everyone on the forum know when they or someone else has crossed the line, and giving mods the ability to cite something concrete when they ban someone.

Hmm, I just don't think all that is necessary.
Nor do I. "Use common sense" is the only rule I fly by. Sure people gripe about my decisions sometimes; I consider discretion to be a much better rule than a two-ton rulebook full of arcane policies and so forth, at least on a small scale forum like Allforums.
DarkFantasy96
11-28-2007, 04:41 PM
Why do you think that posting some rules means a "two-ton rulebook full of arcane policies"?
Obviously, just "using common sense" doesn't really work, since everyone here has a different notion of what is acceptable on the boards. Some people are fine with personal attacks, others think they should be punished. Some people have a problem with profanity, etc. and of course they make a big stink when people say something they don't agree with.
Napsterbater
11-28-2007, 04:43 PM
Because it would eventually turn into one. People complain all the time about the rules, and having six is an invitation to having six hundred. Some general guidelines would be appropriate, I could even write up a set, but rules aren't really needed.

Would having a bunch of rules change that? Some people just like to bitch. If they're not bitching about my actions, they're bitching about the rules. Or, even worse, both the rules and my interpretation of the rules.

Perhaps we should have a sort of vote... Set up a thread where people can contribute what they think are the necessary rules, and then the mods take the 5 or 10 or 15 most popular (I guess depending on how many responses it gets!) and puts them up. We can still use the warn/ban system, just have the rules up so people know when they're about to be banned...
Out of curiosity, Borg, did you give Jenny a warning before you banned her?

Having the rules posted would allow members to see what they can't do before they do it. I think this would solve problems, since most of the time when people get banned I don't think they believe they've done anything wrong.

Not in PMs. I warned her on the forum proper. However, being banned is not a punishment. It's just, "We don't want you here anymore." People seem to view it as some sort of punishment, and that's just incorrect.

Posting with common sense is a excellent rule of thumb. Infact interacting with people with common sense in mind is even better.
I am not a stranger to controversy on AFN. Alot of people feel I should of been tossed long ago for my signatures, avatars, and overall risqué manor of dialog, and looking back maybe I have to slightly agree.
The difference here that i haven't seen addressed is pretty simple..
As of present things in AFN are if anything unstable. Things are getting slightly out of control, people are taking sides, pointing fingers, and generally growing upset. Some people are making this a right VS left issue.... Some people are making this an abuse of authority issue, and others see nothing wrong at all...
The point is Mr. Shaman,Truthout, and myself have been put on notice indirectly for our methods of postings. While these issues are being sorted out and debated. I chose to exhibit common sense and pretty much refused to stir the pot. I apologized for clearly what is an indisputable fact. Certain posters dislike that style of jamming the board with threads pushing an agenda. I didn't point fingers at Shaman, and Truth and agreed not to fall into that behavior anymore. Common sense told me not to pour gasoline on a burning fire.
Shaman, did not use his innate skill of common sense and chose to stir the pot,and continued being brash and brazen, and in the end was banned for 3 days as a result. Jenny i have never seen at all on here, chose to stir the pot and was also tagged. They did not choose to help with the problem, they had a hand in creating, but instead attempted to make it worse and use it as a platform to push an agenda.
Everyone does have a different take on what common sense means,,,,but ofter all it is called "COMMON" sense

Rules suck.
As for thread-jacking, I like the way threads evolve -- sometimes we end up discussing things completely unrelated to the original topic. There's nothing wrong with that, in fact it can be a good thing. However, when there's an obvious and deliberate attempt to derail a thread the mods should intervene -- that's why they get paid the big bucks. Ha ha.

My name is just a biased website, but I still post it as if it is fact!!!
-truthout
...etc
And the thing is... they wouldn't even really post their thoughts.. it was just link after link after link... and Shaman would have some little quote that a monkey could come up with, and then colored lettering, and then another link... That's not debating, that's just spamming.

but those few have to actually make sense... hindsight is 20/20
I guess they could come up with 95 statements on why spamming should be allowed on this board.. but I think they should have been banned.

Will you give it a rest, FT? If you keep this up, you're going to be next in line. And most of us actually enjoy having you around, or we did before you started whining about some apparent vast right-wing conspiracy in Allforums. People's dislike of Shaman has absolutely dick to do with his politics and everything to do with him being a spammer. I happen to like people with as diverse beliefs as you, Vilepagan, and Travh. I don't like people who spam this forum with crap.
As an aside, Shaman is a supporter of Hillary Clinton, who I'm pretty sure you believe is one of those same "rightwing thieves and warmongers" running this country. So I don't understand how it is you believe his politics and yours coincide.

Paul, I like donkeys :) and I am on a mission when it comes to our beloved Mr. Foolsworth. Personally he reminds me of my mother when she first stated coming down with Altimers/Dementia. In the end as compassionate people we are all probaly going to have to cut him some slack. Which is ok with me. :)

Thread jacking is adding anything to a thread that is not relevant to the topic...
This topic is thread jacking so if you post stuff that is not about thread jacking you are in essence thread jacking per se...It is hard to always stay on topic but that is the job of the mods to bring it back on track.. which can be a tricky job with the group of people on this forum... Lots of forums have strick rules on high jacking a thread.. here they are pretty laid back.. As Borg has stated...not a bad thing but things can go bad really fast for some posters...
No complaints here though...seems fair for the most part. :)

Thank you Shortstuff for your input! There are actually some folks here that have no idea what "thread jacking" actually is. Most of them are older folks that live on this messageboard :)
So now, Moderator!!!!! :) ? How close to "Topic" do we have to be before we get the "Guillotine" :) ? God but I am glad that I am not management! There are way to many creative people here :) !
I love you guys! Nothing is boring on this messageboard :) except maybe me :) I do live in my own world!

Not quite. Threadjacking is the deliberate attempt by someone to marginalize somebody else by starting a conversation about something completely different. The difference is the element of malice involved. All topics, given a long enough run, will eventually go off topic. For Allforums, we'd be pretty lucky to have a thread stay on topic after three pages. That isn't the same thing, and there's nobody stopping anybody from making an on topic post and continuing the discussion. Threadjackers will work in concert to ensure that the on-topic discussion is dwarfed by intense debates on the nature of belly button lint. The aim is to cause a sense of helplessness in the targeted poster making him feel like he isn't welcome there.

In regards to belly button lint...
Does anyone have problems with ingrown pubic hairs? I don't, but I have always been curious about that. Hair, in itself, is quite useless... unless you are writing a musical. My favorite musical is Little Shop of Horrors. Speaking of shopping, is everyone finished with their Christmas shopping?
