We survived the vicious storm of yesterday. Tree is still down on the front lawn but will be removed this weekend.

Right now it's 47 and partly sunny. It's Fall now.

Wild & crazy weather we're having here in Tennessee:rolleyes:

High of 63... Going back down, folks. It's supposed to hover in the 50s for the rest of the week, rain tomorrow and Friday though... High 40s on Monday, and that's the last day on my weather widget. :D

Yeah-must get pretty boring swatting swamp flies all day :D

Question about FL.

Why do pools in FL have cages around em ?

if you mean "cages" like a high fence,it's to keep small children out of the pool unsupervised.

If you mean like the screening all around the pool, that is mostly to keep bugs away and allow a breeze through. My girls grandparents have a screened off porch,or lanai,as they call it off the back of their house. It is great to be able to sit outside at any time of the day or night and not be eaten alive by bugs

paulc

Must be bugs then. These things I seen at villas were like Irish police stations in the 70s :D

DarkFantasy96

I was gonna say they're probably for keeping little kids AND gators out of the pool.... In FL, they call small children "gator bait" (at least that's what my relatives down there called us when we were little).

neither have I,but I wouldn't put it past anyone to call a human gator bait in Florida ;)

although I was more worried about the scorpians in my backyard than a gator getting anywhere near the pool

Yeah, well you're from a different part of FL. It's real different over there. Where my family lives, it's redneck central. My grandparents live on a dirt road. There's gators everywhere over there too... Just sitting out in the middle of the road ignoring the cars that swerve around them.

Are the scorpions in Florida the deadly kind? I think they are. I've been stung before, but that was in Costa Rica, and those scorpions are the huge, scarier looking ones but they won't kill you.

MichelleG.
01-09-2008, 06:30 PM
hhmmm.....that's a good question. Some of them must be cause before we moved in to our house we had someone come out and get rid of a bunch of them. A girl in my daughters class at the time was stung by one and all it did was make her foot swell up.

Hmm... You know, now that I think about it, I think only the desert kind are deadly. The kind that can live in wet places (which would be the Florida ones and the Costa Rica ones) aren't. The poison did make me feel a little high for a couple hours though. :D

My Mom lived in Floral City in central Florida and there were bugs and gators all over the place. It was hot as hell and very humid too.

I live directly on the beach and there are no bugs or gators. People here don't even have screens on their windows. Maybe the constant breeze keeps the bugs away. I don't know the reason but we are never bothered by bugs.

The closest we have to a gator are the two really big fish in our lagoon, one a barracuda and one a pompano. The lagoon used to be connected to the ocean and when its mouth was closed due to a hurricane a lot of fish were trapped. They have thrived ever since.

As I am typing this I am looking through my glass balcony doors at the ocean. The waves are very gentle this morning and their is a large container ship about a mile or so off shore heading for Port Everglades, further south. The palm trees are gently swaying and there are only puffy, white cloouds in the sky. Looks like it's going to be another perfect day in Paradise.

Maybe I'll play a round of golf with my wife, maybe we'll do a bit of shopping or maybe we'll just sit on the beach. Decisions, decisions, decisions.

:slap: :bike:

just had to add that didn't ya? :p

I was talking to my girls' grandmother in Florida, she lives in Brooksville on the Gulf side, and she said it was still a little chilly at night, but was warming up nicely during the day.
I miss it being 70 in January

Frogger

I didn't have to add it but it was just too much fun to resist.

I've been to Brooksville. My Mom and a half dozen or so aunts and uncles lived in Floral City which is close by. I always considered that area to be sort of the asshole of Florida; lots of pines and Spanish Moss, hardly any palm trees, lots of bugs and gators and high humidity. Since it is further north in the state the temperatures are also quite a bit cooler in the winter. My Mom even had the pipes freeze on winter and all the orange groves had to convert to pecan groves because the weather was just too cold.

I loved my Mom but I hated where she lived, rednecks, crackers, bugs, gators and humidity.

Here in Pompano Beach I live on the barrier island, directly on the beach, east of the intercoastal. Most of the people in my election district, district one, are transplanted northerners, either from New York, Ohio or Canada. Not a cracker or redneck in the bunch. The closest we have to something like that is the French speaking Quebecois who are a society unto themselves. The local stores sell more copies of the New York Times and the New York Post than the Miami Herald or South Florida Sun Sentinel. Almost everyone has money. Most of the middle class people live west of US 1, (Federal Highway) where all the stores and restaurants are located and the poorer people live around Dixie Highway, even further west. Pompano Beach has a fairly large Brazilian, black and Haitian population but to be honest, the only blacks we see in our neighborhood are cleaning ladies and handymen. It is a pretty segregated society around here, not because of racism but because of economics. Apartments in my complex go for about a half million dollars and just two complexes north of me the houses on the beach go for from three to twelve million each. When you consider most of us are here for only a portion of the year that's a lot of money for housing.

I noticed that myself about Brooksville when I lived 10 minutes from there in Spring Hill. Big difference 10 minutes across SR 50 can make. Spring Hill is mostly a retirement community with some middle class families mixed in. My neighbor on one side came down in the winter and left in the spring.
Where my girls' grandparents built their house on 10 acres of land, you'd never guess they were in Brooksville,it's quiet and spacious. Their grandmother grows her own palm trees, has over 100 of them on her property now in various stages of growth. They lined their property line with pine trees for privacy too. Didn't see a gator one when I lived there, but I don't think for a second they aren't around.

I've been through Pompano Beach before but never really paid attention to the housing and people.

Frogger
01-11-2008, 09:49 AM
The next time you are in Pompano Beach drive down A1A, the road I live on. All you will see will be mansions and expensive condos. Take Federal Highway and you will see a typical Florida town and take Dixie Highway and you will see a poorer, darker neighborhood. Florida is like Long Island in many respects. Wealthy areas near poor areas, blacks and whites pretty much segregated and the closer to the beach the more expensive the houses and the more educated and wealthy the owners.

MichelleG.
01-11-2008, 09:56 AM
A1A is what we took through there. I've lived in Miami also so I'm sure it's similar to that in respects to the segregation. North Miami Beach is more the "hood" area and South Beach is the upper class rich people. I didn't much care for the beaches there, nothing but topless women and people who really shouldn't be wearing a bikini or Speedo...ick

It isnt a continuous road anymore, but if you pay real close to the current maps, you can trace the route in its entirety. Most of the original road is still there, but you have to look for it, and some you'll swear was designed for a horse and buggy, cause there aint enough room for a car.

You can drive it in one day. It is about 1,100 miles from NYC to Orlando. You take the Verazano Bridge to the Goethals Bridge and go to the New Jersey Turnpike. The New Jersey Turnpike turns into I-95 when you approach Deleware. Stay on I-95 through Maryland, Washington D.C. (you could take the Beltway around DC but as someone strange to the area you are better off staying on I-95), after DC you will go through Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and then Florida.

Jf you want to make the trip in two days a good place to stop is Florence, South Carolina. It is the first big town after South of the Border. (You have to see South of the Border). If you want to make it a three day trip you should stop at Rocky Mount and then Charleston, South Carolina or Savanah, Georgia, both nice places to spend at least a full day.

I was born in Florida too, but I'm certainly not a Floridian. In fact, I don't really have a "hometown", where I feel perfectly at home. I feel most comfortable in Maryland and DC, but there's no place that I really think of as where I belong, since I've moved more times than years I've been alive.

I do love the weather down there... I'm quite the heat lover. When it's 100 degrees and humid, I don't even need A/C; just a couple of fans and I'm in heaven! I'll see what I can come up with, but in the meantime let's make the toilets overflow by dropping spoons down them. That'll be good for some snooze time anyhoo, not to mention, laughs. The lazy maintenance men don't do anything but sleep at their desks or drink coffee anyway.

Wait--one DID pick up a leaf last fall. I shouldn't have lied.

Maintenance crews don't show up here until we're about to leave, so it would be a waste for me to try that here. LOL @ the leaf! Sounds like your maintenance guys and mine are kin.

Low 80's and overcast.

I have two guys installing tile on my balcony right now. I'm having a lot of work done to the place; balcony repair, refrig. repair, two full length floor to ceiling mirrors replaced, ceiling painted, new hurricane proof balcony door. The place is in a constant state of messiness with all the workmen coming and going.

Not at my age. I don't really want to see myself naked in a full length mirror.

my living room in Florida is only fourteen feet wide and the mirrors make it seem wider.

When are you coming to Florida? If you aren't too far away maybe we can get together.

Still in the 30's this afternoon in Big D. Could be some snow flurries to our south. With my luck, it'll prob come a blizzard since tomorrow's my day off.

Sunny with a gentle sea breeze. The temperature is about 80. The men ought to finish laying the tile on the balcony today so tomorrow it is breakfast al fresco.

Back when it was mskimi I might have invited you but now that it is mrskimi I don't know. Can't be messing around with married women. Hell, I can't mess around with any women. My wife would kill me.

I've had several posters ask how cold it gets here.

Been getting as low as the high teens at night and hovers around 40 during daylight hours.

edited to add that we've received snow here as well.
