So here is the situation. You have Avon, Ohio.. where i reside.. 20 miles west of Cleveland, and next to it to the east is Westlake Ohio. There are some details you need to know to understand what is going here.

Avon is in Lorain County, Westlake is in Cuyahoga County, we share the border. Avon used to be a "farm town" but has been bombarded by new shopping malls, developments, and businesses such as Target, Home Depot, Lowe's, Best Buy, Walmart, etc. Westlake has always been a big time city, they have long been what we (Avon) are becoming, which is a fully developed city, not a home-grown town.

Avon has grown so fast that the traffic is a NIGHTMARE. The main road going through, detroit road, is always backed up. And trying to get on the highway is near impossible. There is only 1 highway ramp in Avon. Avon has applied for another highway ramp that would go between the one they have now and westlake's first highway ramp.

So Westlake says that they demand compensation for all the business they would lose... wtf? They want Avon to pay a percentage of THEIR taxes. I thought it was just BS and would never happen. Little did I know that the organization that decides whether or not a ramp can be built in the northeast ohio area happens to be... you guessed it.. in Cuyahoga County. So they, looking out for themselves, said that yes.. if Avon wants a highway ramp, they have to pay Westlake. Avon City council just voted on it, and it passed! They decided that the city's traffic problem was much greater than the taxes they would pay.

So Westlake, and the organization, have grouped together to commit THE EXACT DEFINITION of extortion... We (Avon) are paying westlake.. and are getting NOTHING in return. The only reason we have to pay is because the people who decide are corrupt. When I saw that it really pissed me off. I was thinking about doing something stupid like standing on the Avon-Westlake border with a sign, telling people not to spend their money in westlake.

If I were a resident of Avon or any other town in Lorain County I would definetely boycott Westlake. In fact, I would boycott all of Cuyahoga County. I don't blame you for being pissed.

Find some other like-minded people to take turns demonstrating, tip off the local paper, maybe even get some local TV coverage. Probably it will fizzle out in a few days but you never know. Sometimes ideas catch fire and take on a life of their own.
