View Full Version : Classic Movies That Suck

Dio Seijuro

Do you sometimes watch a classic movie and think gosh it's total crap, and can't understand why it's so great? (Or, you understand why, but think it sucks anyway because you didn't like it for one reason or another) What are some of those movies?

I thought Night Of The Living Dead was ridiculously lame. 2001 Space Odyssey bored the hell out of me. I also didn't like Raging Bull. I fell asleep in the middle of Belle de Jour.

Reflections In A Golden Eye with Liz Taylor and Richard Burton is my all time least favority classic movie.

I've never understood the appeal of It's a Wonderful Life.

It's not a bad story, but way too long, and the opening scene of the talking planets would bring a howl of laughter from modern day moviegoers.

The li'l tot in the closing scene who squeals..."Teacher says, that every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings"..has been good for many a hilarious imitation at our house over the years.

We're a nice family.

OOps, forgot to mention My Fair Lady.

It has 2 good scenes...Ascot Race Day, and the ball.
The rest is a snoozefest of subpar, or worse, songs, like Why Can't a Woman Be more Like a Man? zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Of course, musicals in general are all pretty bad, except for Sound of Music which has good songs and people who can sing, and a nice storyline.

It's your fault, dio, that the song "On the Street where You Live" from My Fair Lady is now running through my head, and it Won'T STOP!!!

"People stop and stare
they don't bother me
there is no other place on earth that I would rather be....."

OK, I kinda like that song.

PS Here's another horrid "classic" movie--"The Birds" by Hitchcock. We saw this on the Hitch fest the other day. I'd forgotten how truly silly and nonscary it is. Why don't the people just wear goggles, wrap a towel around their head, and start swinging a steel rake around their head and kill hundreds of birds with every spin, instead of sitting around to be pecked to death by seagulls is beyond me.

PPS Rear Window is dumb too.

This one isn't a "classic-classic"... but whenever i mention it to people my age they label it that.

"Goodfellas"... i watched it about a year ago, and thought it really wasn't that good of a movie.. everyone else just loves the movie: "OH MY GOSH IT'S A CLASSIC"... I could go in detail on why I don't like it.. but eh I have homework to do lol.

For years I heard & read about a Disney animation spectacular from the 1940's. Could never seem to find it, was always locked up in the Disney vaults. Finally, sometime during the 1990's it was re-released and shown at a local theater. Of course, I was in line for a ticket, got my popcorn and sat down to watch a "classic". The movie was Fantasia. While it may have been spectacular in 1940, when shown in original format it did not impress me in the least. I was really disappointed.

I think what made fantasia such a hit in the 40's was the soundtrack. The orchestra music was awesome

Completely agree. From the cover, the marketers make it look like a Mickey Mouse movie, but in reality is just a series of plotless animations that are supposed to add some imagery to classical music. Yaaawwn.

A "classic" I never got was "True Grit." I saw this on cable one day and managed to watch some of the movie until the cheese overwhelmed me. Afterward, I found out John Wayne was awarded Best Actor for it. What a pitiful award!

I also don't really get "Blazing Saddles." There was one really famous scene that made me bust up ("Hey, where are all the white women at!?"), but the rest of the movie was just utterly unfunny to me.

When Fantasia first came out it was state of the art. I was enthralled by it as a kid. Nowadays it is just so-so.

Hey, now. I liked Night of the Living Dead.

**Spoiler ahead**

I especially liked the ending because I thought the black guy was going to survive. I thought to myself, "Yay the black one actually lived for once!" Then, two seconds later, that damn redneck shot him, thinking he was a zombie.

It's not racism if it's true.

Casablanca and Citizen Kane aren't "total crap", but I can't say I empathize with the praise they receive.

My favourite film, tho not sure if its a classic or not is
'Once Upon a Time in America'.

In my mind it portrayed NYC as I envisage it at turn of last century.

Also 'The French Connection' and 'Ryans Daughter'. :D

Haha yes. Watched a bit of Debbie doing Dallas once, but, ya know...... Once in the late 70's in Corpus Christi,Texas I went to a midnight showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. There was a huge line of people. I had seen it before. Anyway they announced that they did not get the movie and they would be showing Debbie Does Dallas. The edited version. What? I think I was just 17 maybe 18. Of course a lot of people still went in. I don't think they even cared how old anyone was. So the film starts and all the naughty parts are blurred out. It really sucked. We didn't stay very long. I think that was the first time I saw a porno film. Not very impressed. Not to mention weird that they would show a bunch of young people a porn movie when they came for The Rocky Horror Picture Show.:D

My younger sister and brother used to go to Rocky Horror Picture Show dressed as characters from the movie and win prizes. It was a cult classic on Long Island and people would throw toilet paper when one of the actors said charming (Charmin) or pieces of toast when they toasted. The people in the audience could recite all the lines along with the actors,

Fantasia is cool. Night of the Living Dead is good. Dr Zhivago rocks my socks. The Birds is just funny. A Wonderful Life is ok. Lawrence of Arabia is also a very good classic, and Casablanca. As for Citizen Kane, I though it was alright, however I wouldn't go so far as to say it's the best movie ever, as so many critics claim.

My favorite classic movie will always be Dr. Strangelove, directed by Stanley Kubrick. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it if you like black comedy satire.

I went to one of these showings once. I thought the whole experience was incredibly creepy - particularly the audience literally chanting defamatory things during the movie. Guess I just don't get it.

P.S. West Side Story is another I don't get. It was a different generation I suppose, but I just couldn't take the fruitcake dancers seriously as gangsters.

Oooooh, not wise to hate The Godfather, DF! Better watch out or you might find a horse's head on the pillow next to yours.

Kidding aside... I'd watch ANYTHING Al Pacino was in... and drool. There's more to movies than the plot.

Woody Allen:

Not that hot on him. Its hard to grasp American humor at times, anyway.

Dont know the film but he made me laugh big time-here goes.

Woody ''I work backstage in a strip joint, helping the girls get into their outfits, $30 a nite''

Interviewer '' Thats not much money Woody''.

Woody ''Its all I can afford''.

:)

It was pretty fake.
Frank "The Enforcer" Nitti didn't tate a dive off a building, he committed suicide by shooting himself by some train tracks.
And the real Elliott Ness didn't even carry a gun--he was a Treasury Agent!

It's true Capone did beat a man with a baseball bat tho, amongst about a dozen or so other murders. His ma used to say "Al's a good boy".....
And he was a good pa to his kids and helped the poor of Chicago with free soup kitchens, etc.

Other than those glaring and ridiculous errors, it was a pretty good movie. I liked Sean Connery's line--"Just like a wop to bring a knife to a gunfight."
