Hello there. I've been a member of some other boards similar to this, but wanted to try someplace new for a while. Hope everyone is doing well here...this seems like a huge place, but I saw someone say you feel like you know each other well, kind of like a dysfunctional family? I should fit right in.
so....i'm a 53-yo woman with much younger interests, and it seems i can't grow up, or don't want to. i just moved to knoxville, tn a year ago, from burlington, vermont, and i just can't get happy here, though i try. but i'll give it more time.
i'm a music lover of the bands phish, the grateful dead, jazz, improv, jam bands, this and that, but with this move, my heart just hasn't been into anything much. i like to read, but haven't been doing much of that either.
i work as a medical transcriptionist from home, am piss poor so never leave the house. i moved down here to be closer to my aging mother, so my sister wouldn't have to do all the work, ended up buying a house right next door to my sister, and that is both good and bad. i share my house with my 2 cats.
i guess thats enough about me for right now. i hope to have time to check out the threads here and find out more about the rest of you.
happy friday. have a good one!

Don't be one, "Stranger".
If you stick around you will find we have a love hate relationship with each other around here. There are the sane, slightly right of center, good people and the less sane, left of center, evil people. You will recognize the lefties by their horns, cloven hooves and tails. You will recognize the righties by their golden halos.
I can understand why you would enter a state of ennui after moving to Knoxville. Damn, Knoxville is almost as bad as Sevierville.
:lolhit:@ Frogger.
Welcome to the forum, Stranger. What side of Knoxville are you on? I moved here last Jan. from Upstate NY *Watertown/Ft. Drum* area and I'm loving it. Been exploring the Smoky's and round about areas.
I only made one friend here and she ended up hating me because I don't have to work, so to hell with people but nature is nice.
Cheers.:drinktoth

Did that person return the one book to the Sevierville Public Library or is it still checked out. I heard the budget passed and they are going to purchase another book thereby doubling their library size.:lolhit:

I've been to burlington a few times, years ago. Crossed on the ferry~ ended up driving around and going to Jay's Peak, but it was summer and not happening. Took a ride to the top anyway.
O yeah, there is no Jreck subs down here either. :( that's what I'm missing.

the smokies are beautiful, what the acid rain hasn't killed.
watertown...thats in the snowbelt, always got dumped on more than anywhere else, right? i miss the falls and winters in vermont more than anything, and i've always hated hot weather, even though i grew up in miami.
i left miami at 19 > charlottesville, VA > then to burlington, which i still feel was where i was meant to be, but alas, i felt i was needed here and it seemed selfish to continue living there, all foot loose and fancy free, once my son graduated from college, with my family down here struggling..
anyway...
Jreck subs? don't know em.
i'll be back...but i'm supposed to be working!!! :comphit:

Weird, we were talking about that today, and how alot of the pollution is from visitors and their vehicles in the Smokeys. Bet the air quality would improve immensely if they had a public tram of some sort, but don't see that happening.
Yeah, Watertown is in the snowbelt. It was normal to get up at 4 am to snowblow so folk could get out. I don't miss all the snow and cold, I'm loving it here.
I love the hot weather, love to soak in the sun til my bones get warm, the cold makes them ache.
Jreck subs was a sub shop we had in NY, made some great subs. here there is quizno's and subway. It's taking some getting used to but they are nothing like Jrecks.
I think it's cool you like your family enough to relocate to help them out, I'm in the opposite boat and moved to get away from some of them. hahaha
We have another poster named Chey here that is from Chattanooga, Tn. We plan on getting together next time she is in the area. We should all get together and paint Knoxville red. :D
Frogger should jump in too!

I prefer gold and white myself...
I'm a Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia Tech and a hell of an engineer,
A helluva, helluva, helluva, helluva, hell of an engineer,
Like all the jolly good fellows, I drink my whiskey clear,
I'm a Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia Tech and a hell of an engineer.
Oh, if I had a daughter, sir, I'd dress her in White and Gold,
And put her on the campus, to cheer the brave and bold.
But if I had a son, sir, I'll tell you what he'd do.
He would yell, "To Hell with Georgia," like his daddy used to do.
Oh, I wish I had a barrel of rum and sugar three thousand pounds,
A college bell to put it in and a clapper to stir it around.
I'd drink to all good fellows who come from far and near.
I'm a ramblin', gamblin', hell of an engineer.
:D
i prefer blue to red.
but thats just me. :)

I'd love to meet some of the posters here in RL but my wife is really against meeting internet friends in the real world. She is worried that some of you are kooks or serial killers in disguise or something and in the interest of family harmony I simply don't interact in real life with people I have met on the internet. I HAVE met three posting buddies in real life though, one who went to Cornell at the same time my youngest son did, one who dropped by my Florida place while he and his wife were riding their motorcycles down from Hernando, Florida and one who stopped by my Long Island home to inform me in person that he was dying of bone cancer and wanted to meet me before he died. All three were normal and wonderful people just as I suspect almost everyone here is.

Tennessee is a fairly pretty state but Knoxville really isn't all that great. Last time I drove through the city I couldn't wait to pass the city limits. There are no major sports teams, no real shopping, no cultural centers other than a movie theater and the only night life is at Cotton Eyed Joe's.
If you want to go to a Tennessee city go to Nashville, or even Sevierville where they at least have Dollywood and the Dixie Stampede. You can even shop at the Tanger Outlets or go skiing or gamble at the Cherokee casino.
Let's hear it for Sieverville, Tennessee.

frogger, i totally respect that. but i have to say that almost all the friends i have are people i have met online. though admittedly, it was an online group devoted to music and women, a safe place of sorts. i'm just older than most of them and thought it would be fun to try some place new. i think its safe to meet people if you meet in a public place and don't give away too much personal info until you feel safe. and yes, i don't think i've met anyone who wouldn't be welcome at my home.

Michael Valentine is the main character in the book, Stranger In A Strange Land, by Robert Heinlein. Anyone who is a science fiction fan knows the book. I guess you are not a fan of the genre.

I suppose that we are all "kooks" in our own way. I don't fear meeting any posters here... some may like to argue, but I doubt that would take place in a face-to-face situation.
I think that the posters that would not want to ever meet in RL, would be the ones that are not really like their forum "persona". People sometimes become someone else when they are anonymous.
I understand your wife's concerns (and your family harmony reasoning... I too avoid things that disrupt), but I would not ever leave the house if I worried that there were people "after" me. My wife, on the other hand, would probably welcome a trip... if only to swing by an antique shop or an outlet mall on the way.

Valentina,
Both my parents were born in Germany. I was born in New York City. As a young child I spoke German before I spoke English because my extended family spoke German at home. When I started school my parents stopped speaking German to me because they wanted me to speak English. It was soon after WWII so speaking German was frowned upon.
As an adult I self taught myself German. My vocabulary isn't what I would like it to be but I speak with absolutely no accent. When in Germany, Austria, or northern Italy I am taken for German. I speak Hochdeutsch while most of my relatives speak either Badisch or even harder to understand, Kurpfälzisch, two dialects spoken in Baden/Wurtemburg.
The word lanzichenecchilooks like it is related to the German word Landsknecht. A Landsknecht was a mercenary soldier, usually a pikeman. They were either German, Deutscheschweiz or Austrian and were often recruited into various armies. They often made up their own independent military companies under their own captains and hired themselves out as a complete unit.

I trace my family back to 1453 in the area around Eberbach am Neckar. My family has lived for more than five hundred years in the small towns of Oberdielbach am Neckar and Unterdielbach am Neckar. I have driven and hiked in the area quite a few times. The area is along what is called the Castle Road because of all the old castles found there. It is right by the Katzenbuckel (the highest mountain in the Odenwald, and the Wolfschlucht, the spot where the last wild wolf in the area was shot and the place where the opera Die Frieschutz took place. You're right. It is really a beautiful spot.
