So, I've finally decided to get around to making a webpage. I've had a few that I've wanted to start on for awhile now, but I'm a lazy bum. Now, the problem is, I'm not terribly learn-ed when it comes to this stuff. I'm aware that I have to first register a domain name.......and after that I pretty much get lost and eventually crawl into a corner, sobbing silently to myself. Beyond that......I think I might need hosting space.........or something. But before I do any of this, I'd appreciate if anyone can tell me which services they reccomend, where I can get the most for my money, etc. I'm not looking to spend a ton of money at first, but I'd still like some decent hosting and what not. But where do I start? When I'm registering the site, is there a specific place that's best to do it?

Yeah, so basically it comes down to I need someone to kind of lead me through this stuff, because I'm perpetually lost. I know it's pathetic, but hey, that's me:rolleyes:

EDITED TO SAY: I'm realizing now that maybe this should have been posted in the Tech Support forum, but I'm kind of asking about services.......apologies to mods if it went into the wrong place.

First off you need a domain, I like homepagenames.com , but you can find some a little cheaper, homepagenames.com just has a real nice automated system...

Then you get a host, we use webdefinity.com. Most sites dont even really only need less than a gig of transfer a month, so you should start out low and upgrade if needed. The only reason you should start about 5-10$ /month for webhosting is if you know you will get a TON of hits or you need mysql databases, etc...

Your host should provide you with 2 nameservers, in which you will take that information and enter it where you registered your domain. Most hosting including ours will set all of this up for you if you buy hosting from them.

Then you just have to build your website, our host provides a easy to use control panel in which you can easily see site statistics, email accounts, redirects, folders, file manager, etc.. The easiest way to upload a entire website is through ftp, in which you type ftp://yoursite.com, go to file >> login, then upload your files into the PUBLIC_HTML folder... It's not that complicated really.. You can manage usernames/passwords for ftp access in your control panel...

Either way for a good host your looking at 20$ year for a domain and 5-10$ /month for hosting... Beware of these companies that give you unlimited everything for 3 dollars a month.. Basically they're LIEING, and if you get suckered into one of those "deals" then I guess itleast you'll learn your lesson..

One other possibilty is to use the hosting that comes with your isp, such as your free 2+MB that aol gives you, and if you register a domain name through a company that supports domain redirects you can foward www.yourname.com to members.aol.com/yourname for only the cost of the domain. Free hosting by AOL, EARTHLINK, ETC dont offer php support, mysql, or any other necessary tools for powerful websites...

Zach,

Most of my clients use www.000domains.com (Only 13.50 a year), or if you have a paypal account, they use www.bugetregister.com (14.99 a year). thThese are both recommended to them highly, as I have over 20 domains spread evenly amongst them on personal projects I have.

HTML starting? I think you know a lot more than you let on, but ww.htmlgoodies.com great pplace to refresh.

www.freewebtemplates.com I used to release templates to this site, but after the site was hacked he lost a lot of them, take a look, he has some nice ones

www.freesitetemplates.com This is a great site for more templates as well.

www.sitepoint.com great if you wish to go a little more indepth

If you have any questions about anything just post, or contact me personally.

Also I would recommend you have Frontpage, Dreamweaver, GoLive or something to get you started, as they ten to take a lot of time off problems with the code.

Look at a budget of about 75 dollars(12 months hosting + 1 year domain registeration), and if you need more help when picking a host, I can give you a few to stay away from.

Thanks for the advice, guys. This should be enough for even ME to get started. I don't know what I'll do about website design yet, but I have enough free time on my hands that I should be able to figure something out.

Well, [i:60733bfe4c]my[/i:60733bfe4c] hosting/network site (http://www.subfactor.net/) isn't like the rest. We provide great deals, with no advertisements, no costs and much more. Check us out if you're interested. Nevertheless, webdefinity looks great.
