Secessionist advocacy groups are planning meetings in Tennessee to discuss the advisability of secession from the United
States. Big government seems to be the main gripe.

I don't know, paul...how serious were they at Fort Sumter?
No one then ever really thought it would come to that, yet it did.

It seems to me the secessionists are gaining ground and are picking a perfect time to break away--we are already embroiled in an overseas war, there's apathy amongst the citizens, our government is broke, and there is much anger directed towards the government.

Are we willing to go through another long and bloody war to prevent this? I would say no--and the people in high office are hardly Lincoln and his war cabinet. There are no men anymore of his caliber, or it seems that way sometimes.

You know our president blows when he pisses off lefties and righties enough that both are talking about secession.

I mean, nothing is going to come of this, but wow.

Ya know,I can just picture these intellectuals, sitting in wine bars discussing who should be President of Vermont,
or,
some good old boys in the backwoods of TN,with the Halloween costumes on,dreaming of the good old days.

Seems it is time for a Second Constitutional Convention.

The Framers of the Constitution expected for us to keep updating the Constitution in light of changing events.

First, we have to get office holders to --- at a minimum --- merely be faithful to their oath of office. Is that to much to ask? The Bill of Rights has stood the test of more than 200 years. We should not be allowing George Bush to shred it right in front of our very eyes.

They go back to polishing the one-eyed snake with hand lotion.

:bombout:

Some of our past Presidents must be very relieved the Internet wasn't around, and the media were more restrained during their administrations. Imagine the battles online if JFK, LBJ, or RMN were around today!

Have you guys ever thought about what it would be like if every state was its own country?

Yeah, about 40 of them would be belly-up within 6 months. Totally unable to pay their bills.

Well just look at the whole country. If our government was a business, it'd be sunk!

No, if it were a business, things would have never reached this stage.

Give it up, guy. If it were not for the oil business, and other major corporations, throughout the years, you would still be living in a "soddy", knee deep in horse shit, and trying to grow all your own food, weave your own cloth, and dying at 50.

But still somehow clever and funny. The point is this: The government is a busines. And if we don't like the managers, we can elect new ones.

The government SHOULD be run like we would run a business. If we did that, perhaps the nation wouldn't be hemorrhaging money.

Some would say it was our breaking up of the oil companies and other monopolies which generated the growth you are so proud of.

Not at all. His point is absolutely sound. No it's not sound. People were not forced to grow all their own food or weave their own fabrics up until the age of big oil companies (and other major corporations). Pick up a history book, for crying out loud. Neither is the point relevant, since it does not address the notion that government is big business.

No reason to condescend, Shilo.

Whatever you say....

Will I find proof of your assertion in a "history" book somewhere? If so, then perhaps you'll be kind enough to provide an ISBN for me. You see, I'm just a lowly econ major, and none of my professors ever really told me how effective our government was at running shit like a "business". When you get the name of that book for me, I'll be glad to check it out.

Thanks.

God, I never seen such a fool.

With out the big corporations, oil only being one of them, you would not have:

Transportation, other than horse and buggy.
Communication, other than snail mail.
Industry
Electricity
Most of the food you eat, daily.
and more than likely, a job.

Just look around you, pick out things that you depend upon, that are not made, or brought to you by a corporation. Bet the number is minute.

I don't know where you went to school, but until the advent of the railroad, mass transport, and the industrial revolution, most people were required to produce their own food, cloth, and clothing. Sure people could barter with neighbors, for a few things (I'll trade you 2 pigs for a cow, or two tomatoes for two ears of corn). But until the big bad corporations, and those nasty, greedy profiteers, came along, this country was primarily agricultural, with families being pretty much self sufficient.

Yes, government is big business, its just a shame its not run like a successful one.

Transportation, other than horse and buggy.
Communication, other than snail mail.
Industry
Electricity
Most of the food you eat, daily.
and more than likely, a job.Notice how you added a bunch of stuff to the list to shore up the stupid earlier proposition.
Just look around you, pick out things that you depend upon, that are not made, or brought to you by a corporation. Bet the number is minute.True, but that does not support your earlier statement. You're adding to it.

But until the big bad corporations, and those nasty, greedy profiteers, came along, this country was primarily agricultural, with families being pretty much self sufficient.Your grasp of history seems to have huge gaps. Cities and trade, monetary systems and large farms/industry to support all that prospered long before the industrial revolution. The changes are not bad, mind you, but the idea that life has only crawled out of bare self-sufficiency due to large corporations is flat wrong.

Yes, government is big business, its just a shame its not run like a successful one.Perhaps it need to give itself tax breaks and subsidies and not be accountable to the people? (Oh, wait...)

You need a book to explain an analogy?
