The B word, the C word, the F bomb & the F word, the N word ... a tad bit of overkill PC?
Granted, the teacher should have reviewed the material prior to handing it out in class - so she was lazy. However, as the material was reportedly designed to illustrate racism and bigotry through the experiences of a young black boy, would not the dreaded N word be a part of that?

Hell, the way blacks throw the word around, between each other, it should have lost any negative connotation it once had, by now.
It is virtually impossible to listen to a group of young blacks talking, without hearning N word numerous times, and the F word in every sentence.

Because the effects of decades of slavery and decades of persecution can just be wiped away with a few decades of culture!

I actually tend to agree with you here. Most 5th graders surely already know the word, so it's not like it's teaching them a new bad word or anything...

Actually, I find that the white people I know curse much more than the black people, and I have never once heard a black guy at my school use the N word. I bet they do sometimes, but not all the time, considering that I walk past and sit next to groups of young black people all the time at school. Although I'd say about 2/3 of my friends are white, and the black guys in our group of friends are really not the type that the other black guys want to be friends with. (We're all nerds, goths, metal heads, Magic players, gamers, punks, etc.)

You can blame that on the latest welfare reform bill that made a welfare check an acceptable replacement for a father. That was passed by Whitey.
Don't get me wrong, I blame whitey entirely.

You don't think the leaders of the civil rights movements were screaming for some type of federal funding to get their peoples out of the slums?

Even if there weren't a quota, and there probably aren't anymore, schools would still ensure that there is a somewhat diverse mix of students. To do otherwise would invoke the wrath of the media.

Let me guess, you blame whitey for not filling up boats with poor black people and shipping them back to Africa.

Of course schools do that. They want to provide a diverse learning environment in which students can be exposed to new cultures. It's all over college websites and brochures. My school is a community college, so they admit everyone, and the demographics look about like the racial make-up of the area: whites have more than any other one race (about 40% or so), but they aren't the majority, maybe 20% of the students are black, and the other 35% are divided between Hispanic, Asian, and other. The school I want to transfer to and finish my BA is quite different - about 86% white. However, that is also a reflection of the area it's in. In fact, about 93% of that area's population is white (thank you, SMW's thread about zip codes). :)

Foolsworth was talking about top-tier universities, whose students come from all over the country. How diverse they should be is anybody's guess.

The college that I want to transfer to, which happens to be about 15 miles from my house, is in the top 10% of liberal arts colleges in the country.

Well, I can't say that I fully disagreed with what President Lincoln proposed, and that's exactly what he was advocating at the time. Black people (as a whole) have given us headaches since their emancipation in 1865.
Every time I hear of "reparations", Rodney King, or Jena, I start thinking he was right.

I'd say that a lot of black people would agree with you on this one.

That's refreshing. I wonder if they'd be amenable to it now.

I wouldn't think so - like try roughly 45% Asian, 40% white, and 15% bla-spanic (mostly by quota, of course). That would be my guess concerning the racial makeup any big 10 or Ivy League school.

Not that many Asians, hon. They're only like 4% of the population; there literally aren't enough of them to make up almost half of the Ivy Leagues, even if they ALL got in.

Well, when I went to UIC (University of Illinois in Chicago - and a very good school, I might add), the student populace nicknamed it the "university of Indians and Chinese". We don't all have to reference fact sheets when proffering our gut feelings regarding student makeup. Call it empirical data, at best.
You might not be privy to said empirical data, Nappy, seeing as to how you didn't go to school, but I applaud you uncovering the fact that I pulled those numbers outta my ass when I had written the words, "that would be my guess" in the previous post....
Congrats. You found me out.

Plastic fantastic Dallas (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21122384/)
A sweeping City Hall corruption probe that has produced federal charges against a dozen black civic and political leaders is renewing suspicions of racism in a city with a long history of combative minority relations.
"It makes Dallas look bad," said Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins, who is black, "because people just have the general sense of the city being unfair to people of color."
Sixteen people — 12 of them black — were named in corruption indictments unsealed this week. Most of them were charged in what the FBI said was a kickback and bribery scheme involving the awarding of contracts to white developers to build affordable housing, mostly in black neighborhoods.
Some blacks said they suspect the case is an attempt to dismantle Dallas' black political leadership.

This time it's the judge's revenge (http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/law/10/11/bell.jail/index.html)
A black Louisiana teenager at the center of the racially charged "Jena 6" case was ordered Thursday to spend 18 months in a juvenile facility, after a judge ruled he had violated his probation for earlier juvenile convictions, a source with knowledge of the court proceedings said.
Mychal Bell, 17, who was freed two weeks ago after his adult criminal conviction for beating a white classmate last December was overturned, was sent to the Renaissance Home for Youth in Alexandria, Louisiana, the source said.
The decision came at the end of a two-day juvenile court hearing that was closed to the media and public.
Carol Powell-Lexing, one of Bell's attorneys, said the judge's decision would be appealed.
Bell was freed on $45,000 bail on September 27, after an appeals court threw out his conviction on battery and conspiracy charges in adult court and remanded the case to juvenile court.
But Judge J.P. Mauffrey agreed with prosecutors that Bell had violated the probation he was given for four previous juvenile offices, including two simple battery charges, the sources said. Bell had been placed on probation until he turned 18.
Civil rights activist Al Sharpton, who has championed Bell's case, denounced Thursday's decision as "revenge" by the judge and called on Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco to intervene
They got the kid out of jail, got him plenty of sympathy, the best lawyers money can buy and his own record bites him in the ass. Time for another Al & Jesse show. Wonder who (other than the revenging judge) they'll blame this time, because the kid certainly isn't responsible for his own actions.
