This really sucks.
Robert Jordan was the author of the Wheel of Time series, one of my favorite series of fantasy books.
The first book of the series came out in 1988 and he was working on the 12th and last book in the series when he passed away. I just reread the entire series this year in anticipation of the last book coming out, but now unless someone finishes it for him it doesn't look like we will ever get to read it.

Good riddance. I think I made it through 4 of his 1000+ page books before I realized he was just recycling plot thems in order to get people to read more of his books. He totally exploited his readers.

Thats unnecessarily harsh...

You only just started the series. Granted the 5,6,7th books all sucked because they were all setup, they got much better after that and the 11th book was really good.

They never got better. I remember reading Crossroads of Twilight thinking, "how long is this asshole going to drag out every single minor plotline at the grievous extent of the major?"
He milked that series for damn near twenty years. It serves him right that he would kick the bucket before he would bother finishing.
He could have written four excellent series in the time it took for him to finish one. And that one was made horrendously worse by his idiotic stalling tactics. Nimrod.

Oh man,,,, you guys are really trashing him... I never read his work. I dont do space books.... I am more of a middle earth type of guy....
Speaking of space fiction i got an issue i want to vent,,,,,
I was turned on to this TV series that is kinda like a space/western. I never heard of it when it first came on,but i knew it was already over...
FIREFLY
They have it on DVD... so I get season one and it is GREAT... i watch the last episode and fire up netflix for the next season and POOF... there is none!! WHY!!!!! The season ended with cliffhangers... i have 13 episodes wrapped up on those cliff hangers.... how will i get closure....
So i hear there was recently a movie.... i remember when the movie came out,it looked dumb but i figured hey maybe i was in a foul mood or sober or something.... so i get the movie Serenity.. it was O.K but no closure at all..... very disappointed,,,,,,,, thank you for letting me vent!

My boyfriend absolutely LOVES Firefly. Serenity, not so much, but he still liked it. I watched the first episode of Firefly. He's trying to make me watch all of them. >.< Oh and LF, I think it was canceled after only one season.

WHY!!!!! it was good... hell look at the crap they keep on now.... your telling me it couldn't of made it on UPN? or CW or what ever they are now...they could of dumped it on USA or TNT (now known as spike) NOT EVEN THE GOD DAMN SCI FI channel would take it??? bullshit....
Joss Wheaton was behind it,,, it was his favorite project!!!!.... JOSS WHEDON....
it was bad enough they cut Buffy... they thought angel was going to carry the brand ,but then it went all crazy with the storyline and next thing i know there were like 3 new characters and that Dara chick was human... and there was a 15 year old boy who was angels son... or something,,,, I dont know...
point is it should of lasted more than a single season!

That's what he gets for being a greedy bastard. Three big gripes I had with his work.
1) We know your wife is a man-eater. We do not need you to beat your readers over your head every second with female characters who are just another iteration of your shrewish wife. We get it, kay?
2) I love big huge worlds as much as the next guy, but seriously, how can you expect us to keep track of hundreds of minor characters? I want to enjoy a story, not keep notes.
3)C'mon now, don't you think the story should have ended four books ago? You do not need to tell the life story of every single Dark Ajah, Darkfriend, Forsaken, (you lost that right when you made thirteen of them!) random Aiel bodyguard, Seanchan noble, random consort of Mat's, et al, et al.

dude i hate that... you never know... book ten comes out and this guy is the main character and he was so rarely mentioned before you forgot all about him.... and over the time from your talking this series have been alive for i would of lost my mind

A friend just gave me "The Eye of the World", seems like there are a lot of negative comments about him and his books, though. Is it worth it to start reading?

Nappy I disagree that the books never got better.

Crossroads, Dharma. But I went and read through the Wiki page on the eleventh book, and didn't find it engrossing enough to want to pick up the book.
Carbon, I will have to say no, I don't recommend you pick up the series now. There's no way the series will be finished, as Jordan kicked the bucket without much time at all to start writing the last book, so a writer hired to finish it would have to do all the legwork himself, and likely butcher it, and after book four, the series just collapses under its own weight. But you'll never realize it until you're deep into book eight wondering, "Why the fuck did I even start?"

I never really liked Jordan's writing. About the only sword and fantasy stuff I was ever really into was Fritz Leiber's books about Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser.
I was always more a straight scifi fan rather than a fantasy fan. Give me Poul Anderson, , Alfred Bester, James Blish, , Lester del Rey, Isaac Asimov, L. Sprague de Camp, Robert Heinlein, L. Ron Hubbard, Philip K. Dick, Philip José Farmer, Henry Kuttner, C. M. Kornbluth, Theodore Sturgeon, Jack Vance, Frederik Pohl, Clifford D. Simak, John Wyndham, and A. E. van Vogt.
Stories like Ringworld, The Foundation Series, A Gun For Dinosaur, The Weapon Shops of Ishar, The Last Castle, they were good tales well told. Too much of the modern stuff fits into Sturgeon's Law that says ninety percent of science fiction is crap.

I sawr it. It was phenomenal. Truly a tragedy when the series got fucked into oblivion. But let me be blunt here. It wasn't terribly noteworthy. I mean, it was the Wild West in space. It's a great concept, but it's not the kind of science fiction that really makes you think. Nor does it hit all the hot buttons that Star Wars did. The characters were amazing, the dialogue witty, and the effects intense. That's about it. The over-the-top wittiness kept it out of reach of the mainstream. I think if he had toned it down a tad instead of requiring people to rewind every few minutes because they didn't catch some sublime turn of phrase, he'd have done better with it. And there were entirely too many loose ends to fuck with. I love his lovable characters as much as everybody else, and I was just as devastated when Wash bought it. But after it was all said and done, it was easy to move on, because there was no real plot underlying the whole thing, and the one plot it had was tied up with the movie.
An amazing bit of pop culture, but not much else. Hopefully Joss will come up with something with more staying power, yet just as intense, next time.

Why? do you know?

Dude it was a hour long weekly series on a network.... it wasnt an epic 6 movie event spawning over 30 years...

So it was for a smart crowd.... i followed fine as i know you did too... you got to be sharp to understand it like most points on Buffy ,and like it or not ::gulps"" Gilmore girls....
and I was just as devastated when Wash bought it....
you know he only bought it because the movie was the last hurray
But after it was all said and done, it was easy to move on, because there was no real plot underlying the whole thing, and the one plot it had was tied up with the movie.....
It was wrapped up in the movie too fast. they could of pulled it along alot longer and developed the story more... like a reaver joining the crew (like 7 of 9 on voyager) or develop a wider character story... toss in an alternate reality storyline... HELL... look how long X files drug shit out for and this was much better written than X files main plot.
Besides the bad guy in the movie and at the end of the series was bad ass... he could of even been a cross over character

Star Wars was never expected by George Lucas to make it past the first flick. The strength of the story was enough to carry it through the rest of the storyline. Even though the dialogue was shit, the characters forgettable, (with the exception of Han, and to a lesser extent Obi-wan) the strength of the story, plus the newness of the idea, set the series on fire, and the fire never quit. The first screening went to 32 theaters. The technical crew members were even asked for autographs. For five years, it was the highest grossing film of all time, until E.T..
All on the strength of Luca's first effort. I think Firefly could have done that well, had he mediated his quirks somewhat.

I am not a fan of heavily plot-driven fiction books, and Robert Jordan's seem like a famous such series. I dislike very much when authors use exploitive tactics to keep a story going and going, while the aesthetics, creativity, and intellectual demand runs thinner. That's why these days if I am reading fiction, I read only classics (This probably was also reinforced from just finishing Harold Bloom's Western Cannon), award winners, or the new work of an author I already like and respect. If I want plot-driven, I just watch a movie or read manga!

Actually, from what I understand, Jordan was doing a lot of work on the book right up to the end and his wife is also a writer who is credited as co-author on a couple of the books in the series. There is a good chance she will finish the last book for him.

Wikipedia says otherwise. If you have better information, I would like to see it.
