Living in Arkansas, I'm right in the middle of Wal-Mart country and I hate the monopoly they have, around here, especially. I go elsewhere, when possible, but they do make it difficult to find as good deals at other stores. I made the comment a couple of days ago about them cashing in on the gas prices and their new advertising scheme. They will capitalize on everything they can.

I don't really mind Wal-Mart. We buy some things there, especially things like toiletries, DVDs, electronics, and clothes for my little sister.

Almost every Wal-Trash I've walked into has been an absolute pit. I also try and avoid the store as often as possible, but with the cheapness of some items, and the fact that college makes a man broke...sometimes I can't help myself.

Actually, the Wal-Mart nearest my house is quite nice. Not usually too crowded, very large and roomy, and things are easy to find. Much better than most of the others in the area.

Yeah, that's my point. You can't afford NOT to go there, sometime.
I think Sam Walton has probably rolled over in his grave a lot in the last few years, with the way things are handled now. It was not his vision for it to be like it is now.

The Wal-mart where I'm at now (and the one a half hour away from my hometown) is a hell hole. Stained tile floors, rusted shelves and it smells like pee. Thankfully there's a new superultramega Wal-Mart being built (literally, this thing is huge).

I shop Walmart all the time. They are building a new one nearby. It'll be the biggest one in IL. So I'm looking forward to that. But I have to agree some stores are in bad shape. There is one that I quit going to because it's filthy all the time. The majority of the customers that shop at this particular store are....hmmm....I'll be nice and just say.....icky.

we have a Super Wal-Mart by me and the entrance smells like puke....I blame the Subway in there.
I mainly go there for shower essentials and groceries cause I can get stuff way cheaper there than Kroger.

The Wal-Mart in Council Bluffs (which is about 45 minutes away from my hometown) has a satellite office of the Council Bluffs Police Department in it. There's a photo of it on collegehumor.com

They are in the process of doing away with the old wally worlds everywhere, and replacing them with 'supercenters'. I hate them. They make me tired. The old one's were much easier to navigate in, but I guess they just aren't keeping them up, since they will be replacing them anyway.

I avoid the place like the plague.

Depending on where it is, the quality of a Wal-Mart store can differ greatly. The better quality ones are actually pretty pleasant. I'd buy cleaning supplies, toiletries, and basic repair stuff. Where I live, there is a Target that is both nicer and closer than the closest Wal-Mart, so I go there instead.
Overall I don't find the need to go more than 5 times a year though...I don't understand why some people can go every week and buy stuff. I was living alone in an apartment the last two years after graduating from college, and I found these basic cleaning/toiletry/repair type of supplies last forever for me. I probably spent less than $200 on these in the two years.

The local Wal Mart supercenter is like a 3rd world country. No shortage of non-English speakers, wearing costumes of every sort (just off the turnip truck, thug, wannabe pimp, dumb-ass redneck, 18 different kinds of ho's, incredibly fat folks showing way to much), very few of whom pay significant attention to their daily hygiene. The police are there so often they may as well set up a substation - the local newspaper identified the wally-world parking lot as one of the highest crime areas in the county. I will occasionally go in there, alone, at mid-morning in search of a specific item and get out as quickly as possible. I cannot remember the last time my wife admitted to going in the place.

It sure does. As es pointed out, it consolidates certain types, making them much easier to avoid.

I like target, too, but we just got one here not long ago and it's, of course, not as convenient to get to.
I hate shopping of any kind, so it doesn't matter what the store is, I get in and get out as soon as possible.

People only go there because they think they can get a good deal.

Their prices on household goods--brooms, dishtowels light bulbs, bleach, etc, can't be beat. It IS a good deal. I comparison shop. Why pay more for the same thing?

Honestly, Ren I just hate it there. I would rather pay a few cents more than do Wal-Mart. Luckily here we have a few rivals that will price match. I find myself looking at those women leaning on their carts as they walk and watching their enormous bottoms wave up and down as the fat bounces and they stack their carts with junk. Eeww...icky.

I actually didn't/don't mind going there. For a penny-pincher like me, it's a dream.
Also our WM is a clean, well-kept store with helpful sales clerks and well-stocked shelves. Of course, it's very large and god help you if you forget something on the other end--a long trek. A shopper should really have a skateboard and/or roller skates. Once I forgot dog food and by the end of my excursion there felt like I'd conquered Everest.. With 5 kids and a grandkid, we always thought WM was our friend.

Well if I'd had five kids I likely would have too. :D You look damn good for someone who has five and a grandchild...and a new puppy!

HA! True enough. You just wonder how they can pack that much fat into those spandex pants without the seams splitting. Makes ya wonder about the thread strength.

I am doing well girl. Just in the middle of a huge sale at work so work is hoppin'. My guy is training for his next marathon which keeps him busy and even less aware of my activities...
And we have had a cold front ride in right after the long weekend so it's unseasonably cool actually. It's warmer today but damn we lost summer fast. The days still feel warmish with a bite to them and nights are cold. Autumn is my favourite time of year. Although it is on the wrong side of winter it is still perfect hiking weather. The trees have not begun to turn yet but they will in a week or so. This is a beautiful time of year up here.
How's it going down there? Riding up a storm are ya? How cool does it get where you are.

Wally world is wal-mart around here. Wal-Mart's home base is up here in Bentonville, AR - not too far from where I live.
I have been riding. Took a good 220 mile ride with the mister Sunday, then a few blocks from home, promptely dropped my poor bike and broke a mirror and put a slight dent in the tank and bummed up my (good) elbow a little. But, it wasn't tragic, so that's good.
We have some pretty good winters here, probably some temps and events close to what you get, but not for as long or severe, I'm sure. We had a nice cool snap last week, but we're back into summer this week. It's just a matter of time before the fall settles in, and it is my favorite time of year, also. The Ozarks are beautiful in the fall, also.

I have no problem with Wal-Mart. They fill a necessary niche. Less affluent people can go to Wal-Mart and purchase what they want for much lower prices. They also can purchase just about anything they need without going from store to store. Those of us who are more affluent can also take advantage of Wal-Mart's great prices and huge inventory. Whatever I need I can usually find at a Wal-Mart, be if fishing tackle, a gallon of milk, or a bottle of Ibuprofen.
Some of the customers are a bit laughable, is a scarey sort of way. Women with rolls of fat should be forbidden from wearing Spandex or halter tops and men who can't see their feet shouldn't be allowed to wear low rider jeans or tight shorts. No one should ever be allowed out of the house with hair rollers or wearing slippers, especially the fuzzy kind.
If people don't like Wal-Mart they simply shouldn't shop there.

I dont think it makes me live better but it keeps my wallet fuller. I live in a small town and the small town grocery store has outragous prices. So I go to Wal-mart because I can get everything cheaper. Otherwise I hate going to the Wal-mart.

Did you get little web-feet scratches on my bike? You really need to check the 'internet pet-peeve' thread again. Paul and I have been making all sorts of plans for you......
