Hypothetically speaking - lets say you have an opportunity to win $1,000,000 in a contest. To win - you must choose from one of the following five options:

"Punch" option ---- You will be punched in the face, just once, by a big fat man. The punch is guaranteed not to be fatal nor to cause brain damage, but you will likely sustain a nasty injury such as a split lip, black eye or perhaps even a broken nose. After being punched - you will be given the $1,000,000!

"Bomb" option ---- Nothing will happen to you. However, you will start the countdown on a huge bomb that is hidden deep inside the center of the Earth. The bomb is large enough that, when detonated, it will cause devastating earth quakes and floods all over the planet. The bomb is completely undetectable and can not be disarmed. However it will not detonate until exactly 5,000 years in the future. As soon as the countdown has started - you will be given the $1,000,000!

"Insults" option ---- Twenty people will shout terrible insults and obscenities at you for one full hour. These people will not come into physical contact with you nor harm you, but they will say all sorts of horrible and upsetting things to you. After one full hour of intense verbal abuse - you will be given the $1,000,000!

"Magic" option ---- Your personality and ethical convictions will be painlessly altered in some unknown way by a magic spell. The alteration will be instantaneous and will not affect your memory, cause brain damage nor result in any physical harm of any kind. After the alteration - you will be given the $1,000,000!

"Nothing" option ---- None of the above. Nothing happens to you or anyone else, but you will NOT be given any money.

Insults are purely verbal. Anyone can handle that.

Punches inflict physical pain, that's a little tougher, but still, all in all, I'd risk it for mil!

The Nothing option has to come in at number three, because the the consequences of the remaining two options (magic and bomb) are far too devastating to risk. A million bucks ain't nowhere near enough for those.

Magic is fourth, because, if it were to come to that, I'd rather sacrifice my own personality and ethical convictions before I would harm anyone else, let alone countless others.

Bomb, obviously, is last. But in reality, for me, it doesn't even make the list.

I imagine the magic option would be placed above the nothing option by a person who realizes that they have no friends because their personality sucks.

And, I imagine the bomb option would be placed 1st by a person who believes either 1) humans will leave the earth within 5000 years 2) the earth and/or humans will be destroyed within 5000 years. Basically, any situation that leads to "no one is on earth to be affected by the bomb when it goes off."

Now that brings up an interesting question. For those who have chosen punch option over nothing option, if the punching act becomes progressively worse (without incurring lasting damage, of course), at what point would you give it up and chose the nothing instead.

Hmmm, depends on the type of pain, heh. My pain tolerance is very high actually. I agree with you, emotional pain is much worse than physical usually. Unless of course you break an arm or something. However I'd still rather get yelled at by 20 people than punched in the face. I would probably start laughing at them, seriously.

I'm quite emotionally sensitive. Anyways when you get punched, it only lasts a second and it will heal. If one of those 20 people hit on a deep insecurity you might be permanently damaged. I dunno, the punch option and the insults option are actually almost equal to me.

A physical injury will hurt for the duration of the healing process.

Have you ever had a deep bruise, it felt like it went all the way to the bone? and every time you hit it always hit it by accident,lol] the pain is tolerable but intense all over again?
I have. I was hit by a knee board in the side of my leg and it hurt for weeks. I compare that sort of pain to being hit in the face by a fat man, that is why I would prefer the insults.

If 20 people shouting insults hit on a deep insecurity of mine, I would more than likely laugh about it and see how foolish it was to have it, than to let it cause permanent damage, and besides, the people who are insulting are the ones with the problems and insecurities I would think.
I would compare them to the "school yard bullies", the most insecure people are the ones that lash out to hurt other people,and their insults wouldn't hold any weight with me.

First of all, insults that you personally do not agree with will not be hurtful at all. Just about the only things that would hurt would be what DF said, insults that you know are at least fairly honest, touching on one's weak spot. The problem is, here are 20 random people doing this in a setup, too inconsequential for the incipient to care IMO.

Now it would be a much improved twist if it was 20 people you care very much about, being put under mind-control device that makes them pour out their deep, heartfelt insults about you (that are usually suppressed) to you. Now that would hurt a little eh?

My feelings were basically ripped apart in an incorrect analysis performed by a friend of mine the other night; especially coming from him, it broke my heart.
Similar to DarkFantasy96's feelings of insecurity when insulted, it hurt me more because he is a friend I have confided in.
I haven't spoken with him about the whole event yet because I'm upset and will have to cool off a bit.But to make a long story short, I apparently need to start doing drugs, dating better guys...umm, let's see...I'm spoiled, no one who says they like me actually like me, I need to do my makeup differently...

Yes, insults from loved ones would hurt, but I'm not sure I would change my answer. I would be devastated if 20 people in my life insulted me on a personal level, but I still don't equate that to a punch in the face by a fat man. My emotions can withstand a stronger hit than my body.

Eeeeeeeeewwwwwwwww, just reading that turned my stomach. 7 Stitches. I remember years ago, carrying eggs and tea into the livingroom. I caught my foot on the couch when I was racing past. Little toe got snagged and snapped. I heard it snap. I didn't even spill a drop of tea. I walked calmly across the room and set my breakfast down. Then fell onto the couch cursing and screaming. My mum thought someone was killing me. It was the summer time with all the windows open and she was embarrassed about what the neighbours would think of my potty mouth.

I told her how much I cared about the neighbour's thoughts at an equally loud volume.

Then I asked for ice. "Ice please." She came flying back with an ice pack for my foot but the ice pack had not been requested for my foot. It was for my head and chips to suck on since I was gonna throw up and or faint.

That's true wussy.... ME.
