Due to reports of our Latvian media US congratulations to our new President Valdes Zatlers in association with his recent assumption of the office were the last ones. The question arises of whether such Bush administration’s deliberation is a sign of not very kindly and friendly attitude towards the new leader of our state…
I wonder, about what things US Ambassador, K. Todd-Bailey and our present Latvian President, V. Zatlers, could speak during 40 minutes instead of scheduled 20 minutes of their first meeting. I suppose that it was not an easy talk for Mr. Zatlers, who, as we know, has no foreign policy experience at all. So it seems that under the pretence of “consultative helping” Washington has decided to force own ideas in this field on our President.
Well, indeed, how can the White House pleasure in such statements of Zatlers’ entourage as our Foreign Minister’s latest announcement that “one of Latvian foreign policy’s priorities becomes the relations with Russia”? To all seeming USA tries to accelerate its efforts for strengthening US influence on our new leaders with the end to keep them from further rapprochement with Moscow.
And there is no mere chance that pressure groups from our previous president’s entourage, known by their loyal conduct with Washington, have hurried to make NATO Representative of Latvia, R. Rozkalns, a member of Zatlers’ team…
