I really liked the stage performance and the music.
It's sad though that it will inevitably serve to strengthen the irrational belief some people have that some "higher power" is there wanting to "save" them.

why don't you let them make that call for themselves? Why do you have to ridicule them for what they choose to believe? I mean, they COULD be right... right? Then what... what do you do? I'm guessing they are saying the same thing:
"It's sad how that guy couldn't come to believe, eternal happiness flushed down the drain by pride and ego... how sad".

?!?!?
How am I stopping them? They are prefectly free to make whatever call they like.
Why do you have to ridicule them for what they choose to believe?
Their beliefs are irrational and superstitious........but the reason I am moved to ridicule them and speak out against them is because they often try to force the rest of the citizenry in this country to conform to their preposterous taboos and superstitions.
I mean, they COULD be right... right?
Yes, they could. But until the day that they offer some slight shred of proof, I'd prefer that they not attempt to coerce the rest of the non-religious citizens to conform to their taboos and superstitions.
I'm guessing they are saying the same thing: "It's sad how that guy couldn't come to believe, eternal happiness flushed down the drain by pride and ego... how sad".
If their little invisible sky-daddy wanted me to "believe in" him, he should have made it possible for me to blind myself to reality and to totally forego reason.
I cannot force myself to believe -for instance- that the Tooth Fairy is real. Reality and reason maintains the upper hand and my belief in that entity is impossible. The same goes for all "gods".

Great Lifehouse music video/stage performance metaphor.

Thank you for posting that, dharmabum. I was deeply moved and admit I cried watching it. It depicts the struggle though life and many obstacles we face in our search to find peace and happiness.
Freethinker, I don't see anything wrong with believing in a god of peace and comfort. How can you deny a higher power exists?
I can't describe it, but it is real to many people. How can you explain the fact that churches are full with so many people who have the desire to serve god? Are they all delusional, brainwashed or whatever it is you see them as?

Me too. I had never heard of this band before my aunt sent me this video.
I really like the metaphor.
It's sad though that it will inevitably serve to strengthen the irrational belief some people have that some "higher power" is there wanting to "save" them.
I pointed this out on my blog when I posted this video, that the metaphor in the video doesn't have to be of Jesus, it can be taken to be God, Buddha-nature or even just Oneself.
But aren't they all really the same thing in the end?
A lot of people find that "higher power" in themselves.
Who is to say that is not "God"? I think a large degree of the problem is disagreement between people about exactly what "God" is to them. A lot of churches insist that you agree to exactly their beliefs about "God" and they reject any other concepts of God out of hand. But again, who is to say that God is too small to encompass all the concepts man can imagine for it?
I have always liked this saying I found written on the inside cover of one of my philosophy books in college:
"Man is God, looking at itself."
Of course, I assume "Man" to be a figure of speech meaning all humans.

You're welcome.
I think that anybody who has experienced some of these obstacles feels exactly the same way you did while watching the video.

I won't speak for FT, but IMO I think "churches" have a lot to do with fostering feelings like this. Churches are extensions of human power that can be used selfishly or selflessly and unfortunately there are far more of the former than the latter because the former is far more profitable... and profit (money) is king in our society.

.Yes, dharmabum, I have experienced a few of those obstacles, they did a great job making the video.
I know all too well about "churches" fostering these feelings, in believers and unbelievers alike.
I don't go to church anymore because of the ill feelings I have received there. Churches are extensions of human power: but I don't think that should stop people from seeking out a higher power, just my opinion.
