I was playing Company of Heroes last night and in the middle of a game the system locked up. Not an rare occurrence, but not really common either. It locked up good so all I could do was do a hard shut down . When I restarted the computer it fired up and went to the initial screen that says ASUS as the motherboard began its thing. Well, that is as far as it got. It just hangs on that screen indefinitely. The fans and DVD drive all power up, and I can insert a CD, but all it does is make a repetitive ticking sound once the CD is in there. My keyboard does not light up and I can not enter set up by hitting delete. Anyone have any idea what my problem is? Is it motherboard or CPU? Thank you.

ASUS P5nSLI MOBO
Intel 6600 Dual core proc.
2 gigs ram
7950gt video card

May be a memory problem (bad stick). Try booting with only one stick and then the other (if first fails) and see what happens then.

Could be other issues also... but kind of "sounds" like RAM issues.

Does the computer make any noise? Unusual sequence of beeps, specifically?

By the way, Company of Heroes is a great game.

No, it doesnt make an unusal noises aside from the soft clinking that comes from the DVD drive when you insert a disk. I inserted the ASUS motherboard set up disk, it did not play, just softly clicked every 4 seconds.

and yes COH is a great game, alas I can not play now, hence my frustration :( Do you play online borg? what is your name?

I'm not an online player usually, and my Windows has been absolutely unoperational for about three weeks and I haven't bothered to stick in the restore CD and fix it. So, no.

OldPhart sounds like he's perhaps onto something, though usually it will beep at you if there's some bad RAM.

What might be happening is the DVD drive went tits up, and since the BIOS is usually set up to boot off of it, it's messing with the boot order. Try opening up your case and pulling the IDE (ribbon) cable out of the drive and seeing if Windows loads. If it does, you know you have a faulty drive.

cool, I will try that, then try removing a stick of ram. I cant remember if I set it up to load of the DVD drive first

OK, I tried the RAM thing and disconnecting the DVD drive, still not working. any other suggestions? Could my motherboard be fried?

Can you boot to a floppy?

If the BIOS isn't even coming up, then yeah, that's your best bet. You probably need to send it back to the manufacturer, or the store you got it from, assuming it's still under warranty.

I made the computer myself with components I got through newegg.com, the specs are as followed:

ASUS P5nSLI MOBO
Intel 6600 Dual core proc.
2 gigs ram
7950gt video card

Trav, here is an entire thread on your mobo from anandtech

I didn't read all of the posts (it's 200+ pages) but there seems to be some issues with RAM voltage and BIOS settings. There are a few posts here that mention the random freezes with this board. Seems RAM volatge and timing are critical.

I read on another site that this board was a bit finicky as to what RAM was used. My guess was that was also related to timing and voltage issues.

Hope this helps...
