Border agent shoots a illegal alien "smuggler"...

While I don't necessarily condone the shooting (it's conjecture on the circumstances at this point), why would the Mexican government be so upset? Are they afraid it might "cut into" the monies being sent back?

I think our often useless politicians need to have a old fashioned "come to Jesus" meeting with the Mexican government.

Interestingly, articles like this one (http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-remit_fridayaug10,1,4347679.story)popped up yesterday.

Mexico does little or nothing to even slow their citizens from leaving in droves. Apparently their borders are wide open as there is no shortage of citizens from other countries using Mexico as a path to the U.S.

Actions, such as these, might have something to do with Mexico's attitude, and why fewer dollars are be sent there.

My question is, why were these actions not taken 10, 15, 20 years ago?

If it were up to me we'd be building a maginot line, pillboxes with 50 caliber mounted machine guns. Let's see them get by those.

The Maginot line sure kept the Germans out of France. ;)

Yeah, that line was kind of like the fense we are building. It didn't cover the whole border. The Germans just went around it.

Oh I don't think there will be anything that will stop Mexicans from crossing the border. Mexico encourages it far too much for that to ever happen.

Let them use able-bodied welfare recipients.

If it were up to me, I'd put our millions of prisoners on chain gangs and let 'em earn their keep.

Good luck with that.

Just in case anyone didn't know by now, you have to have a job to be on welfare...

Then every state should be more like Texas!

Yup. I was born and raised in Texas, and have seen plenty of prisoners on chain gangs, chopping roadside weeds, tilling, and tending fields of food that will eventually end up on their own plates.

I think it's an eminently workable option - keeps the prisoners busy all day and tires them out so they're not that interested in raising hell out of boredom (fewer prison riots and assaults); produces the food they eat (reduces incarceration costs); teaches them a possible trade after parole (educates prisoners about farming instead of having them educate each other about breaking and entering); enforces the fact that you have to earn your damned keep in this life (could reduce recidivism rates); and gives prison guards a chance to hone their shooting skills (should someone pull a Cool Hand Luke and try to run).

Everybody wins.

So why don't more states make their inmates work for their keep? And why not put them to work picking crops for local farmers who can't afford paying more than minimal wages (therefor eliminating the need to hire illegals to do it on the cheap and keeping small farmers in business)? How could anyone find such an idea unacceptable?

I don't get it.
