punk's kinda a hard genre to define, but I'd have to say the Ramones are my all time favorite, butIlaso love The Sex Pistols and The Clash. but, being as old school as I am, I really love pre-punk stuff, like the Stooges, MC5, The New York Dolls (obscure but damn good) and one of my all time favorites is the VU. I'm not particualarly into hardcore, it has to be really really good to catch my attention. and I love Weezer, though I woukdn't classify them as punk.

Do you play a musical instrument, Whammy?

no, I used. I tried playing piano and guitar but I have really bad pitch and don't really have nay musical talent. I stick to listening to it and writing about it now.

Since Punk is such a large Genre, I think I'll split into each subgenre, muahaha.
Pre-punk: MC5
Pre-PostPunk(that makes almost no sense...): Brainticket(it is really really early Goth)
Early punk: The Damned(The Clash suck, Sex Pistols would be number 2)
Oi!: Clash between Angelic Upstarts and Sham69
Early Hardcore punk: Bad Brains/Adolescents
Hardcore(heavier): One King Down
New Hardcore punk: Most definately The Fleshies
I don't do horror punk, Misfits have terrified me from it. Although if you classify AFI into more horror punk than hardcore, I like their early stuff.
Psychobilly: Alien Sex Fiend by a landslide
West Coast Hardcore: Dead Kennedys with Circle Jerks coming in as numero dos
Post-Punk: ...hmm, Siouxsie and the Banshies, Tapping the Vein, and Bauhaus
"Pop"-Punk: The Living End, with Jawbreaker in second
Flower Punk: NoFx and Bad Religion
Celtic Punk- The Tossers and The Pougues... Dropkick Murphys suck so much ass I'm surprised their mouths aren't brown.
Blibblob, your local punk.

wow. I've finally encountered someone who can subgenre. now I know I'm not the only person who can rattle off random types of music and understand the whole thing.
Why don't you like the Dropkick Murphy's? I personally think they're a lot of fun...

Had to, musical styles within punk are too great, can't just pick one...

It's not random :D.

A) They are sellouts, and within the genre of music they play, sellouts are traitors who should be shot and shunned
B) Musically they are far more terrible than the two I just mentioned. They have to add distorted guitar so it makes it difficult to realize how much they suck :D. Let's put it this way, I can play their stuff.

I guess I have a soft spot for them. sentimetnal value, they get played at camp a lot. but, IMO, they're crap, but good crap. I realy can't explain why I like them, but I do.

Sentimental value is the only reason why I still listen to Queen, Sex Pistols, Def Lepard, Montly Crue, etc. anymore.

I listen to a lot of stuff for sentimental value. it's mostly camp stuff. like Guster. and Blink 182. and Israeli stuff. like the song that one the eurovision for Israel when I was in third grade brings back so many memories that it makes me cry sometimes when I listen to it, but it's just trashy pop crap. because I'm such a music freak stuff like that means the world to me.

anything loud and fast, but not metal, with a serious atitude problem, usually either nihilistic/anarchistic or really left leaning. not bands like Simple Plan or Good Charlotte. never ever them. if it's mainstream, it's not realy punk.

if it's mainstream, it's not realy punk.
Unless you're Crass, then you can make it to the British top ten while making the records in your friend's garage and playing drunk. And then donate the money to an Anarchist Veteran's place.
Punk was just DIY. That's it, the only thing punks can't argue with. Tell them it's political, they whine about Husker Du, tell them they're left leaning, they cite Skrewdriver. Tell them it's fast and loud they remind you about Bauhaus.

but no punk band has ever stayed permanently i the mainstream. they all ither fall back ino obscurity or self destruct if they have a hit. or sell out. punk by definition can't be truly mainsteam.

Nobody can stay permanently in the mainstream. People get tired of watching the same person do the same shit, they need a new person every once and a while... to do the same shit :D. Punk can't be mainstream because it's difficult to plan a world tour by yourself. Difficult to pump out that many records by yourself. Thus, they sell out, and crash when the majority gets tired of them, and their original fan base is mad that they sold out.
