Woman sues over NYC pipe explosion By FRANK ELTMAN, Associated Press Writer

MELVILLE, N.Y. - A woman whose sister died in the Sept. 11 attacks filed a lawsuit over last week's steam pipe eruption in Manhattan, saying Tuesday that the explosion brought back horrible memories.

Francine Dorf's lawsuit accuses Consolidated Edison of negligence, saying the utility didn't properly maintain the pipe that ruptured outside her office and sent a geyser of steam, mud and asbestos-tainted debris over the neighborhood near Grand Central Terminal.
"I thought a building was going to collapse," said Dorf, 52, a legal secretary. She is seeking unspecified damages.
Dorf's attorney, Kenneth Mollins, said Dorf suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and "a legacy of fear" from the 2001 attacks. He said the lawsuit is intended to force Con Ed to improve maintenance of its infrastructure.
Her sister, Maria La Vache, was an employee of insurer Marsh & McLennan and was on the 99th floor of the north tower of the World Trade Center when it collapsed. Her body was never recovered.
Dorf said she called her brother and mother after the steam pipe rupture last Wednesday to say goodbye.
"I can't sleep, I can't eat. If I lay down I can see the smoke," she said. "And I think of my sister over and over again. What she must have went through on 9/11."
A Con Ed spokesman said the utility does not comment on pending litigation.

I wonder how much of this is driven by her, and how much by the shyster that found her.

In the realm of rotten lawsuits this one isn't that bad. She's not the only one who's pissed at Con Ed.

BTW, the article said the pipe that burst was 83 years old. Maybe it's a bit overdue for replacement?

Rudy was obviously too busy cutting taxes and forcing departments to cut their budgets to be bothered with little details like maintaining infrastructure.

Pardon me for pointing out that the former Mayor of this very same city where the steam pipes are exploding is running around right now campaigning to be President on the fact that he forced the departments of the city to cut their budgets while he was in office.

More BS from dharmabum.
Try reading, fool, the pipe belongs to ConEd, not the city. You are a hack, anything to blame an administration.

Yeah, we don't even know the facts yet. For all we know, ConEd had twenty warnings that the pipe would blow any day and they just blew it off. It's a little soon to condemn the plaintiffs.

I believe the article stated she was THE plaintiff, I saw no mention of another or any others.
My main issue is not with the fact that she is suing Con-Ed, it is with the reason. You were traumatized by 9-11 and now you heard this explosion and can't eat or sleep or have a normal life? And money is going to make that better how? Go see a therapist if you are having all these difficulties. Tying up an already stressed court system so you can make a fast buck is all I see hear. No sympathy what-so-ever.
There were many people in NY on 9-11 and saw and heard the same things, there were many others in NY the same day the con-ed pipe blew up. Are they suing over stress? Of course not.

So if you suffer from some sort of medical disorder, and someone does something to aggravate it, you shouldn't be able to recover costs for "going to see a therapist" (as if that's the simple solution for post-traumatic stress)?
Yeah, the article makes her claims sound flimsy, but the press likes to do that with lawsuits, much to the pleasure of big business.

How many cab drivers has she sued, when their cab backfired and agravated her "medical disorder"? How about people slamming doors? No one made her claim sound flimsy, it just is flimsy.

What an unbelievable asshole you are Dharmabum.
The pipes under NYC, steam, water, sewage, electric wiring, etc. are all getting old but there is no easy way to repair them without totally disrupting the city. The pipe in question was located outside Grand Central Station and its rupture caused all but one small entrance/exit to the building to be sealed off. There are probaly more people using GCS each day than live in your nearest city.
A steam pipe burst causing one person to die and another to be burned over so much of his body that he will probably also die and you try to turn it into an anti-Republican rant.
Crawl back under your rock.
