On this date, 1918, Tsar Nicholas Romanov, his wife, Tsaritsa Alexandra Feodorovna, their 4 daughters and son Alexei, the heir, were mercilessly gunned down in a house basement by Bolshevik henchmen, acting on Lenin's orders, in the small town of Ekaterinberg.

In looking at pictures of this family, one thing stands out. They were an exceptionally good looking bunch, and the young heir, Alexei, particularly haunts me. The faraway expression in his eyes tells the viewer that perhaps he always knew he was doomed.

He said once to a friend, when the friend asked him why he liked to lay under the trees looking at clouds.. that he never knew when he might not get a chance to do such a thing again.

The Tsarevech was 14 years old at the time of his death. He had suffered from hemophilia all his life and endured much pain and suffering. It's my opinion he would have made a good Tsar. He had suffered much himself and would have probably done much to alleviate the suffering of his people if given a chance.

The bodies of the family were dumped in a remote area outside the town and doused with gasoline. Their bullet- riddled corpses lay undiscovered for 70 some years. When found, the discovery caused a wordwide sensation and, after much study, the bodies were released for burial.

The body of Tsarevech Alexei was not found.

Rest in peace, young sir.
