Texan Accused in Shooting Death of Zebra (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/huff-wires/20070714/zebra-shooting/)
RED OAK, Texas — An 18-year-old man was arrested Friday and accused of killing a zebra named Zambi in a drive-by shooting.
Zambi was shot dead July 5 as he grazed in a pasture at HiView Farms outside of Waxahachie, about 30 miles from Dallas, said Lt. Kevin Ketchum of the Ellis County Sheriff's Office. The farm is also home to camels, llamas and ring-tailed lemurs.
The owner of the farm was outside working at the time of the shooting, Ketchum told The Dallas Morning News.
Joshua Romano and four friends were swimming in a creek but had to leave because of rain. They spotted the zebra as they were driving down a road near the farm. That's when Romano pulled out a deer rifle and shot Zambi dead, Ketchum said. The animal was worth about $10,000.
Romano's friends tried to prevent him from shooting the zebra, and the driver sped up to make the shooting more difficult, Ketchum said.
No phone listing for Romano could be found.

Seems like this case is pretty black and white. A jerk, probably after a few beers, shot someone else's zebra. He will no doubt get his day in court to plead for mercy, and then be sentenced.

I hope they nail him to the wall for it.

The guy should be forced to buy the farmere two zebras to make up for the one he killed. Let him shell out $20,000 and see how funny he thinks killing a zebra is then. He should also be forced to work at the nearest zoo cleaning out the zebra compound until he earns the $20,000.

I'm not sure if the same sort of law exists in Texas, but in WI if you have a dog that kills someone else's livestock you can be liable for triple damages. I think it likely that the zebra owner would be in a position to collect far more than the value of the animal, provided of course that the shooter has any assets to seize.

Since the shooter is only 18 they should have his parents pay the initial money with the proviso that he pays them back. He should be sentenced to house arrest, allowed to go only to work until he earns the money to pay back the $20,000 or $30,000 he has to give Mr. Romano.

he has a deer rifle, and if he is good enough to hit a zebra from a moving vehicle, he likely has more...not much, but it's a start.

18 is 18, not 17. his parents raised him wrong, but this isn't their problem.

I think with his accuracy they could use him on the SWAT team.
But I like the idea of having to pay back double to triple of the guy's loss. That would pretty much be a nice "nail him to the wall".

I wonder if the judge who sentences him might have a zebra himself.
