Canada ranks fifth worldwide when it comes to marijuana usage, but ranks first among industrialized nations, according to the 2007 World Drug Report.
About 16.8 percent of Canadians ages 15 to 64 light up, compared to 12.6 percent of Americans in the same age bracket, according to the report. Canada’s usage is about four times the worldwide average of 3.8 percent, while the United States' usage is about three times the average.
Marijuana, or cannabis, remains the most commonly used drug in the world with almost 160 million people ages 15 to 64 using it in 2005, said the report, which was put out by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. Usage is down slightly from 162 million, according to last year’s World Drug Report, which reviewed data from 2004.
The majority of it is grown in the Americas (46 percent), followed by Africa (26 percent). Canada’s usage trails behind Papua New Guinea and Micronesia at 29 percent each, Ghana at 21.5 percent, and Zambia at 17.7 percent. Among European nations, Cyprus topped the list at 14.1 percent, followed by Italy and Spain, both at 11.2 percent.
Although Canada is a top five user of marijuana, its use among high school students in Ontario declined 19 percent between 2003 and 2005. Cannabis use amongst 12th graders in the U.S. declined 18 percent between 1997 and 2006, and is 38 percent lower than it was at its peak in 1979, the report said.

LOL... What about Jamaica?
Plus I think those statistics might be a teensy bit bogus. I mean, how do they get them? Anonymous surveys? A lot of people wouldn't admit it in one of those.

admitting it in canada wouldn't be a big deal. it is like when i was in germany back in the late 80's. people smoked hash (pot) around the police. the cops paid no mind. they had more worries to think about than someone getting high even if it was illegal.
maybe most of those pot heads are from amerikkka. don't worry amerikkka, soon we can get high and the cops won't care.

I wonder how they got the statistics, is it smoking regularly or just if one has ever smoked? Because 12% in USA seems real low to me.
Or maybe myself and my friends just smoke way more than we should...

You probably do smoke way more than you should, but....
From other studies on drug use, they ask if you have use said drug in the last 30 days. So I guess if you smoked pot six times a year, you have a chance of not being considered someone that smokes pot.
But anyhow. To the original poster, what's your point? Is this actually supposed to prove something?

I doubt there's a motive to a post...just a tidbit of information TF found interesting.
Bu anyways, now that I think about it 12-16% sounds about right for the age demographic they surveyed...I'm sure if they just did 18-24 the numbers would be a lot higher.

Why would a person not admit they smoke pot in a anonymous survey? And I don't think Jamica is considered an industrial nation is it? More like a third world country. But of course there are a lot of ganja smokers there too. Canadians just grow higher grade stuff!

It seems like a very broad category, 15 to 64 is a large percentage of the population to survey.
I can't really think how they would do it unless they are using police records.

Wow;
OK I guess Canada is a bit more lenient on pot smoking and it can be cultivated a lot in certain areas and there is a high usage but to say we are that hi up the food chain. I don't believe it is really that high. I live here or at least in the BC end of it. Cops here are very strict on the cultivation of pot and the possession of pot. Yes if you get caught with a joint by the cops they will take it and give you a hard time. If you were to get caught with a 1/4 ounce you would be arrested and prosecuted...no questions asked. If you are caught cultivating it you are arrested...no questions. There is a high amount of usage with certain medical conditions and is prescribed as such. Is that part of the survey and is it taken into consideration. I feel the USA's stats should be a lot more.
Oh well just my opinion.

Canadians have been producing a fair amount of high grade weed for quite some time - I've enjoyed plenty of it. Makes my eyes red just thinking about it.

It's often too high grade for me though... Not only because of the price, well since I'm a girl I don't ever have to pay for my recreational drugs. :p It's just that I'm such a lightweight, much more now than I was when I started smoking a little over four years ago. I prefer a nice mid-grade that won't get me SO retarded.

The CO and CO2 coming off the end of the blunt.

There's nothing to offset. Pot being a plant, it's all part of the carbon cycle. Carbon offsets only make sense for fossil fuels. The carbon byproducts would have been produced even if that pot plant was burnt naturally, or allowed to decay. Conversely, if it had never existed, it never would have converted any CO2 to oxygen. Thus, burning it is completely neutral to the CO2 levels on this planet.

Merrywanna doesn't need any carbon offsets - there's nothing involved - it doesn't require fermentation, brewing, cooking, or other chemical processing. Dry it out, stuff it in a corn-cob pipe, light it up & enjoy!

hey DF96, are you like most women? most i've noticed smoke up and get sleepy.
what i hate being around when toking up are the ones who want to sit on their asses and stare at the tv, or comp stuff, or play video games.
when i toke up i want to do something.
i haven't been retarded in a long time. back in 2000 i had one tiny little bud that smelled like oranges. i smoked it, and got lost in the woods i've been in a thousand times and started following a herd of deer for hours.
i forget where i read it but the pot growers in mexico genetically engineered a pot that finishes in 2 months. instead of the usual 5-6 months. i wonder how long before the pot shows up here with seeds in it? you know how seedy that mex weed is.

no shit sherlock. but i don't buy weed. being a po' boy and married with children and little money to spare for it, i have to toke up by the help of friends on occasion.
be great if it was legalized or the cops just start ignoring people who do it as long as they don't do anything violent, etc.. well, they do ignore to a point. most if you have a small bag and get caught with it, they just confiscate it and tell you not to do it again. but if you sale it or have massive amounts or someone calls a cop on you, then they do do something.
a lot of cops are pretty cool. just doing their job, and don't need the hassle of paperwork over a small amount bust.
most of the problem for us potheads is nosey shithead nazi neighbors who want to play cops and robbers. even if you do nothing to them, keep to yourself, and don't cause trouble they still feel like they need to turn you in.
i don't know how many times the wannabe cop funeral home director two houses down has called the cops thinking cinqfoil(?) was pot. they've learned to ignore him. when i did grow, and he suspected it, i don't know how many times i've watched the bastard try to trail me into the woods and fields trying to see where i was growing it.

Well whether or not I get sleepy depends on the type of weed, but generally I get the munchies and sit there giggling at things, occasionally suppressing my giggling long enough to say a nonsensical phrase like "Goats eat loafers." or "Cheese tastes like... cheese."

On the Fourth of July I ran through an intersection with artillery shells going off and cars driving frantically...in the nude. I was sober.
I really don't think it would be a good idea for me to be on drugs.

It wouldn't surprise me Fergie. It is considered a very "soft" drug here. Funny thing is, if you are caught with it and it is a small amount (enough for personal use) well no biggie. However if it is a large amount and it looks like you are pushing or dealing you are in big time trouble.
Now the irony here of course is, where the hell do they think you get it to begin with. Someone MUST be dealing and pushing. If you're caught with a plant in your living room, they remove it, that's it.
Go to a party with a fairly sophisticated group of people and there will always be pot available. Any off-duties will smoke it with you but discretion is the key.
One of my stores that I manage has 3 apartments above it. They are old time guys in their 70's, kind of hippie like. Our store fronts the police station. These guys smoke up constantly. Cops never have bothered them. I have because I don't want them smoking it during the day. It wafts down to the store which is inappropriate during store hours. We have a deal, smoke after 5:30 and I won't ream their asses. It has worked for years, no problem.
Now grow-ops are a whole different thing here. They are dangerous and always involve stealing hydro because it sucks huge amounts of juice to cool the house. It's the hydro theft that they will nail you on. You will NEVER be able to purchase hydro again under your name and THAT is a huge problem.
This a university town with two universities and numerous colleges. Guys rent the houses, grow the pot, drive expensive cars and put themselves through school. Get caught kiss your ass goodbye. But you can always get good quality, safe weed.
I am not much for it myself but even the condo building where I live has a certain pungent odour on one of the floors on the weekends. No one thinks much of it.

It's always funny to me that people who smoke marijuana think that lots of other people are doing it. They're really not. I read a government study on percentages of drug use in the United States not to long ago and it said something like ages 14-25, 24% had used drugs in the last month. And then the age groups from there, 25-35, 35-45, so on, was only around 7%.
So no, I definitely would not be surprised at how many people smoke pot. Because there just isn't that many. But if you were recently paroled or have ever served an extended period of time in prison then the percentage in each group quadruples. But that's irrelevant.

I wonder how accurate those studies really are. I've been surprised by how many older people smoke, because I always think that it's about none, but I'm surprised by how few people my age smoke. Twenty-four percent having used it in the past month actually seems high to me. Most of my friends/acquaintances drink but don't smoke.

Yeah I agree with you there DF. Pot is not really a drug for the young...it mellows people out way more than alcohol which can give you a boost. Older people look for that velvet mellow feeling, younger......party hardy.

not everyone who smokes pot acts like a criminal, or even been in jail at all.
and pot smokers tend not to advertise too much. that's why you don't know who is smoking. and many of these people may only smoke once aweek or less.
not everyone gets "mellow" when they smoke pot. i almost always get "charged" when i smoke. i do stuff. when i drink alcohol is when i don't want to do anything.

Oh wait, I had something else to add to my comments about those statistics. I'm seventeen years old and I smoke weed - that is, I consider myself a smoker. However, I do it less frequently than once a month. If I were to take that survey now, I'd say yes. But if I were to take it in a week, I'd have to say no.
