WICHITA, Kansas (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19587242/) As stabbing victim LaShanda Calloway lay dying on the floor of a convenience store, five shoppers, including one who stopped to take a picture of her with a cell phone, stepped over the woman, police said.
The June 23 situation, captured on the store's surveillance video, got scant news coverage until a columnist for The Wichita Eagle disclosed the existence of the video and its contents Tuesday.
Police have refused to release the video, saying it is part of their investigation.
"It was tragic to watch," police spokesman Gordon Bassham said Tuesday. "The fact that people were more interested in taking a picture with a cell phone and shopping for snacks rather than helping this innocent young woman is, frankly, revolting."
The woman was stabbed during an altercation that was not part of a robbery, Bassham said. It took about two minutes for someone to call 911, he said.
Calloway, 27, died later at a hospital.
Two suspects have been arrested. A 19-year-old woman was charged with first-degree murder. Another suspect who turned himself in had not been charged as of Tuesday, the Sedgwick County prosecutor's office said.
The district attorney's office will have to decide whether any of the shoppers could be charged, Bassham said.
It was uncertain what law, if any, would be applicable. A state statute for failure to render aid refers only to victims of a car accident.
Eagle columnist Mark McCormick told The Associated Press he learned about the video when he called Wichita Police Chief Norman Williams to inquire about a phone call he had received from a reader complaining about a Police Department policy that requires emergency medical personnel to wait until police secure a crime scene before rendering aid. McCormick said Williams then unloaded on him about the shoppers in the stabbing case.
"This is just appalling," Williams told the newspaper. "I could continue shopping and not render aid and then take time out to take a picture? That's crazy. What happened to our respect for life?"

That story is appalling.

Isn't Kansas a red state? I bet if she was an unborn fetus she could have found a bunch of people willing to help her out.

Wow.. Just wow.

How could anyone possibly continue as normal when someone is bleeding everywhere and probably yelling in pain.

I could almost understand if people left the scene, but to stay there? Yikes.

That story is appalling.

Without a doubt.

Such bullshit. There's no politics here for you to gloat about, only the opportunity for a small minded view looking for one.

What is sad is that a similair event could have happened in any state in the country.

Why in the hell do you have to throw stuff like that in? There is no place for it. You really should stop doing that Dharma, it makes you look like a complete asshole.

The story is appalling, and so is your response. Get a grip.

Actually I'm the resident unborn fetus here at allforums (keyboard is too big for the womb so I use the iphone), and I can say that bum's response is untrue. I have to do everything myself since no one wants to help out. Luckily, I can get online tips from Bob Vila and my webbed fingers and tail make woodworking all the more easy.

Her name should become synonomous with the callous indifference which was shown to her. Hopefully it will but it is doubtful.

Years ago in high school we were taught about such a case and I have never forgotten it to this day. I think it changed me in some significant way. Some of you will remember too. Her name was Catherine Genovese.

"If this poor woman's death could serve the same purpose then it would give her death some meaning....

Here is the case I learned about then. I wonder if this one will have the same impact? I fear not.

Kitty Genovese called for help and was ignored by New Yorkers, blue state people if there ever were blue state people. That blows Dharma's theory out of the water.

In the Kitty Genovese case people didn't actually see her. They only heard her cries for help. It is inexcusable that they ignored her but it is somehow less horrid than those who stepped over a bleeding body and those who actually took the time to snap a picture before moving on.

Yeah it is somehow more horrid. So are we more horrid today? Back in '64 it caused a public furor. Will this Frogger or will people just say "wow, yup, that's bad" and eat their toast and drink their coffee".

It's just one more body>>>>> over there. ::shrug::

I think the fact that today's story is only filler in the newspapers while the Kitty Genovese story was front page news for days answers your question, Sal.

I can say the same to everyone who overreacted to a simple comment.
